I Can See Clearly Now

Imagine sitting in your third grade classroom trying to

learn how to multiply math equations. Your teacher writes

steps on the board to guide you and your classmates. You

squint, scoot forward in your chair, then tap the student next to

you for help. Despite your efforts, the numbers blur and your

frustration grows. You cannot see to learn.

For many students, untreated vision issues can impact their

education and their future. Studies show that 1 in 4 children

have a vision problem. Children in high poverty areas can feel

an even greater impact. Limited disposable income, transpor-

tation challenges and no paid medical leave may prevent many

parents from getting their children the vision attention they

need.

Thankfully, CCSC offers a clearer future to Houston area stu-

dents through the Louise J. Moran Vision Care Program. The

program is built upon a two-step approach to helping students

in high poverty area schools.

First, a committed group of CCSC volunteers conducts eye

screenings in the fall semester. Working in teams with nurses

and faculty on partner campuses, volunteers provide welcome

support needed to quickly identify children who may have

vision limitations. CCSC provided vision screening to 1,839

students in the fall semester of 2016 – our highest on record

– thanks to the dedicated work of 28 volunteers, a reliable

presence by the Mann Eye Institute, and school cooperation.

Volunteer Cheryl Rowland assists with vision screening at Lovett Elementary.

The second phase of

Vision Care is the fun

part (and where the pro-

fessionals step in) – field

trips! Through the gen-

erosity of the Louise J.

Moran Foundation and

collaboration with the

University Eye Institute

at the University of

Houston, selected stu-

dents attend a field

trip to receive com-

prehensive eye exams

and choose their own

frames. CCSC organizes

each trip and pays for

the bus transportation,

exam fees and glasses. U of H medical students also benefit

by gaining valuable interaction examining younger patients

and diagnosing acute vision issues to prevent future problems.

In 2016, CCSC helped nearly 500 students see clearly through

comprehensive care.

“Thirty plus kids from our school received comprehensive ser-

vices because of this program,” said Susan Schaffer-Boardman,

Lovett Elementary School Nurse. “The impact is immeasur-

able. Good vision health is crucial to academic performance.

Our students are able to put their best foot forward and com-

pete in demanding academic settings thanks to CCSC.”

Dear CCSC Friend,

This first newsletter issue has great metrics of the prior year’s

program results. You can read on the “Year In Review” insert

how many people received food packages, the pounds of fresh

produce harvested from the garden, and other important

numbers.

I sometimes forget to share and highlight another statistic: the

percentage of your dollar that goes directly to these services.

It’s usually around 90%. For every $1 you donate, about 90

cents goes to the programs, and if you’re familiar with the phil-

anthropic world, you know that’s a superb value.

Here are a few stories on how those donations were put to use

this past year:

• The single mother of a 9-year old boy used to work 70 hours/

week just to pay rent and keep food on the table. Thanks to

the Martha’s Way program, she’s down to a realistic 40 hours/

week, leaving her with more time to be a mom.

• An older gentleman who had to quit his job due to a stroke

was challenged trying to live off his social security check,

so he skimped on food to pay for his medications. Then he

found CCSC, and we now provide him with the food he

needs to stretch his dollars each month. The fresh produce

from our garden is like a magical gift because he doesn’t have

a grocery store in his neighborhood.

• And then there was the first grader with behavioral problems

who was on the brink of being asked to leave his school. Our

volunteers walked in to screen the vision of these students,

and once this child was given a pair of glasses, his behavioral

problems vanished. He simply couldn’t see, and thanks to

CCSC’s Louise J. Moran Vision Care program, we were able

to solve his problem.

Thank you for your financial gifts. They are not just contri-

butions to this ministry, but investments in the lives of people

who struggle in our community. Thanks be to God that we can

alleviate the suffering of so many.

In Christ,

Michelle Shonbeck, Executive Director

MISSION STATEMENTThe mission of Christian Community Service Center (CCSC) is to serve the poor, hungry, disabled and otherwise needy while respecting their religious, ethnic or cultural differences. CCSC was created out of faith and founded in the belief that we are called to help all God’s children heart to heart and hand in hand.

Christian Community Service Center is fortunate to have Tonja Rodriguez serving in

the role of Board President this year.

In her professional life, Tonja is a CPA with Harper and Pearson Company. She and her

husband, Joel, have made their faith home at First Christian Church for many years.

At CCSC, Tonja has been involved on varied levels: volunteering at the Emergency

Services-Southwest program, attending special events, and participating on both the

Finance Committee and Endowment Board.

Looking ahead to this year, Tonja reflects, “My passion, both personally and profes-

sionally, is working with non-profit organizations in meeting the needs of others. It is

a privilege to be associated with CCSC. Michelle and the rest of the staff run an out-

standing organization, serving and ministering to clients according to the mission and

making it easy for volunteers to participate. I am honored to serve as Board President

and am excited about the wonderful things in store for CCSC this year.”

Volunteer SpotlightThe Kiwanis Club of Houston has been a faithful vol-

unteer group helping with Jingle Bell Express and Back

To School for over twenty years. Gilbert Godbold and

John Reed are two members who help maintain this

important relationship. When volunteering with these

programs, members of the Kiwanis Club have an oppor-

tunity to give their time, build relationships, and to be “a

small part of the large group making a difference in the

lives of the needy,” says Gilbert. CCSC is grateful to the

Kiwanis Club of Houston and all the other groups that

help our programs and events meet the needs of those

in our community.

VOLUNTEER NEEDSCCSC has the wonderful blessing of being able to offer fresh

produce to clients visiting both of our food pantries. The

CCSC Garden produces a wide array of fruits and vegetables

that many clients would not have access to otherwise. Through

the dedicated efforts of the garden volunteers, CCSC is making

a difference in our community and we would love your help. If

you are interested in volunteering in the garden or serving cli-

ents in other areas please contact Kate Gallup at 713-961-3993

or [email protected].

CCSC 2016 YEAR IN REVIEWAbout CCSC

The Christian Community Service Center (CCSC) is a coalition of churches working to reduce the effects of poverty in the local community. Our Christ-centered ministry accomplishes this through various resources: volunteerism, in-kind donations, operating a resale shop, and cash donations from the private, nongovernmental sector to include church, individual, foundation and corporate support.

The ministry’s focus is to apply core business principles to the accomplishment of its mission so the agency is returning value to the community in an efficient and effective manner.

A Client StoryAt first glance, Clara is not someone you might expect to be a CCSC client. She is college educated, professionally experienced, and her family has maintained their southwest Houston home for two generations. She is the 51-year-old single mother of four, ranging from adulthood to age 10, with her oldest son currently serving in the military. Life threw her a curve ball, however: Clara’s 26-year-old daughter was born with special needs and requires round-the-clock care.

For some time, Clara maintained her career and afforded professional medical attention for her daughter, but recently needed to become full-time caretaker. When living on a fixed income, any small, unexpected expense can create a financial crisis. As a result, she has visited Emergency Services-Central on varied occasions for help with groceries, hygiene items and gently-used clothing. This helps stretch her own resources. On one occasion, Clara requested CCSC help paying a high electricity bill.

Clara knows that someday she will return to work, hopefully in her chosen field of communications. To prepare for that, she has accessed CCSC’s JobNet program and is diligently searching for low-cost medical services for her daughter. More than anything, she wants to be self-sufficient. “It is a humbling experience to ask for help. You feel inadequate. But the team at CCSC has always worked in a way that allows me to keep my dignity, emotions and spirit intact.” In our ministry, she has found her temporary safety net.

Help in uncertain times.Hope for the future.Encouragement along the way. This is how CCSC makes a difference.

How We HelpBasic Needs 10,816 unduplicated persons served CCSC provides community members in crisis immediate relief with every day necessities. Emergency Services-Central and Emergency Services-Southwest offer food, clothing, hygiene items and financial assistance, helping our neighbors avoid homelessness and substandard living conditions.

JobNet helps unemployed and underemployed persons access job search tools and provides skill-building training. Martha’s Way cultivates talented entrepreneurs through hands-on vocational training and job leads.

Volunteer ImpactVolunteers are vital to the success of all CCSC endeavors. Whether interviewing and assessing the needs of clients, giving eye exams, enhancing resumes, distributing school supplies or serving on a fundraising committee, each volunteer makes a great impact on the community.

In 2016, 2,783 persons contributed 43,458 volunteer hours across the organization. Of those, 333 individuals were involved in on-going roles. In the state of Texas, the estimated value of these donated hours is $1,091,242, yet their impact is priceless.

Funds generated by sales at the Sunshine Resale Shop help propel the mission of CCSC. The high quality, donated merchandise available for purchase includes furniture, jewelry, clothes and household goods. In 2016, sales of donated items netted $34,369, allowing more clients to be served through CCSC programs.

CCSC held two events this year to raise funds and increase community relationships: The Azalea Dinner in the spring and Grow, Gather & Give! in the fall.

Our organization intentionally maintains diverse funding streams, as noted in the adjacent chart.

Emergency Services-Southwest helps many individuals. On a

recent rainy morning, a mature gentlemen walked in seeking

assistance with food. Due to a job loss, he had become homeless

and was living out of his truck. He shared that he had applied

for jobs but needed prescription eyeglasses to get hired. We

were able to help him access services for glasses in December,

EMERGENCY SERVICES–SOUTHWESTwhich has propelled him forward. In January, he visited again

for food assistance but also informed us that, although he is

still homeless, he has found employment and has hope for the

future. He expressed heartfelt gratitude and said he would not

know what to do without agencies like CCSC.

In an average month, the clothing room at Emergency Services-

Central is visited 254 times by clients in need. Clothing is the

second most utilized service, trailing only food. Low income

families often lack the funds needed to purchase apparel, so

many items in their closets are inadequate or quickly outgrown

by children. The clothing room constantly needs to be restocked.

Items in all sizes for men, women and children include shirts,

pants, skirts, coats, shoes, undergarments and accessories. If you

are interested in giving your gently-used clothes to CCSC clients,

contact Courtney Hagen at [email protected].

EMERGENCY SERVICES–CENTRAL

Our unique vocational training program has spanned 13 years and equipped 1,394 graduates with the skills needed to run their own businesses. Now available in five locations across Houston, the three-segment, 42-hour curriculum covers “hands on” technical classes, personal development and business skills. Many of the women and men who participate in Martha’s Way have significant barriers to tra-ditional employment, including limited formal education, language barriers, affordable childcare challenges, and lim-ited transportation options. Nevertheless, they have strong will-power, motivation to work, and an inspiring entrepre-neurial spirit.
