Jubail-based Pan Gulf Valvserve expects to witness a 40 per cent overall growth this year, on the back of its recent successes in Saudi Arabia’s Western Region, and its robust order book of global contracts and Eastern Province activities. The company performs a range of repair, maintenance and overhauling services for valve and related components, including pipeline intervention, leaks and emissions control and mechanical services.Pan Gulf Valvserve has completed large-scale projects in the Western Region and in Kuwait involving pipeline intervention services. Among its successful operations is mechanical services onsite, offered for shutdowns and turnarounds which yielded 60 per cent of the revenues (fiscal 2014-2015).To ensure its continued growth in the region, Valvserve has just invested in new test benches for its three workshops in Jubail and Yanbu in Saudi Arabia, and in Bahrain, and portable safety relief test benches for site services, which will ensure that it can expand capacity and grow the company further.

“We are looking to stabilise the company and continually grow through the addition of new complementary services. Valvserve will continue to invest in developing resources and expansion,” said a company spokesman. In line with this focus, renovation work is ongoing at its Jubail facility, while negotiations are under way for a workshop in Yanbu. Its Bahrain operation has recently relocated to a new and improved facility. Other technical partner tie-ups are being negotiated,” he pointed out.Valvserve, which used to operate as a combined facility with a manufacturing focus, started operating as an independent company fully focused on services since last year. Subsequently, the development of control valve service

capability has resulted in an increase in the service offering for the company. The majority of the company’s services include calibration and certification of valves for new-build projects, mechanical and instrumentation site services for control valves, safety relief valves and shut-off valves and pipeline intervention services such as hot tapping and line stoppling, he said.Valvserve also increased its capacity for larger-sized valves which resulted in completing work on 96-inch butterfly valves, while previously the maximum size was only 66 inches.“We have a team of skilled engineers and technicians who are able to deliver a complete range of services for mechanical, safety and control valves. The services range from vacuum to high pressure across a broad spectrum of sizes and pressure ratings,” he said.Customer satisfaction is a key aspect of Valvserve’s business model and the firm’s ambition is to expand it service portfolio to other related disciplines, with a targeted new service each year to 2020.

Pan Gulf Valves (PGV), one of the leading manufacturers of a comprehensive range of valves and accessories in Saudi Arabia, says a projected 15 per cent annual growth in the industrial valves market will help drive its business ahead.

HEALTHy BACkLOG kEEPS PAN GULF VALVES BUSy

The subsidiary of Pan Gulf Industrial Investment says business has remained consistent over the past four years and it has orders worth $100 million in the pipeline.

General manager Adil Sabri attributes PGV’s secure position to a healthy backlog, with the current dip in projects not having affected its revenues as yet.

PGV caters to the needs of a range of end-users across the industrial, infrastructure and public utility sectors including Saudi Aramco, Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic), Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), Ministry of Water and Electricity (MoWE), Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC), and the National Water Company (NWC). During 2014-15, it won projects worth $20 million and currently has prospects marked to the order of $100 million.

Sabri says that even though demand for industrial valves has currently dipped, he believes the market will pick up and will grow at a rate of 15 per cent annually.

“Growth will be proportionate for all types of valves. The focus will be on more intelligent equipment with a stress on energy efficiency and alternate energy solutions for remote installations,” says Sabri.

    Based in Dammam’s Second Industrial

City, PGV has assimilated nearly four decades of expertise as a leading national manufacturer and supplier of valves and associated equipment for the oil and gas, petrochemical, industrial, water, waste water, power generation and desalination sectors in Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Gulf region.

The company, which has a sales and services network that spans across the kingdom and the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region, has developed an in-depth understanding of its markets and the needs and preferences of its clients and end-users.

“Reflecting this, our designs and products have evolved over the years incorporating the most modern design innovations to deliver an unsurpassed level of quality and service to our end-users. Quality, reliability and expertise are not simply ideals – they are everyday words describing everything we do,” Sabri points out.

PGV’s range of product includes isolation, control and safety valves, firewater equipment and associated accessories as well as a special programme of engineered products and pipeline intervention equipment.

Looking ahead, the company plans to make a foray into the upstream segment

of the oil and gas industry with the launch of a specialty range of products.

The company has invested recently in a new manufacturing facility which is currently prototyping high-pressure butterfly, ball and globe valves. The facility is equipped with an in-house product validation and research and development (R&D) centre. Among certifications, it has acquired the required ac-creditations such as  API 6D, API Q1, ISO 9001-2008, WRc-NSF.

In addition, PGV has production facilities spread across 25,000 sq m with 8,000 sq m of covered production facilities; 1,500 sq m uncovered and a 13,000-sq-m warehousing and logistics centre. Its sales network operates out of its branches in Al Khobar, Riyadh, Jeddah, Yanbu and Bahrain.

Sabri says that PGV remains concerned by the continued fall in oil prices, and that a slowdown in infrastructure projects is expected. “Projects will be shelved or put on hold, demand will dip. Expenditure cool-downs will also affect operations through spending freezes. A slowdown for contractors and the retention and acquisition of talent will be other areas of concern,” Sabri says.

What is a Jet Lag?Jet lag is the  feeling of  tiredness and confusion after a long airplane journey.

It’s the result of the difficult adjustment to a new time zone the body is going through. Jet lag can disturb the sleep pattern and make the traveler to feel drowsy and lethargic (lacking in energy). The more time zones a traveler crosses during a long-duration flight,  the more severe the jet lag can become.

What causes jet lag?The world is divided into 24 different time zones. The body’s natural 24-hour clock  (circadian rhythm) is disrupted after crossing time zones.

The body clock  controls the sleep and wake-up pattern.

    It can also affects:• Appetite

    • Digestion

    • Body temperature

    • Blood pressure

The body’s clock is set to the local time so the traveler will feel hungry in the morning and sleepy in the evening. If someone travels across time zones often, it can take a while for the body clock to adjust to a new daily routine.

Treating Jet-LagJet lag can be a problem if someone travels  frequently for long distances. However, it doesn’t usually cause any serious or long-term health problems.

In most cases, the symptoms pass after few days without the need for any treatment.

Advice to minimize Jet Lag When Arriving at the Destination:• Establish a new routine –

eat and sleep at the correct times for the new time zone, not at the time you usually eat and sleep at home

    • Avoid napping as soon as arriving – even if you’re tired after a long flight, staying active until the correct time to sleep will help your body adjust quicker

    • Spend time outdoors – natural light will help your body adjust to a new routine

Preventing jet lagIt’s not possible to prevent jet lag, but there are things you can do to reduce its effects.

For example, make sure you’re well hydrated before flying and drink plenty of water and juices during the flight. Try to rest during the flight by taking short naps.

Jet lag occurs when your body clock is disrupted after crossing time zones

Who gets jet lag? People of all ages can get jet lag, but it’s more common in people over 60 years of age.

Jet lag is thought to be less common in  babies and children. however, there’s not enough evidence to confirm exactly how many  babies and children may be affected.

WHAT DO yOU kNOW ABOUT JET LAG?Jet lag is the feeling of tiredness and confusion after a long airplane journey.

A Super Heater is a device used to convert saturated steam or wet steam into dry steam used in processes, such as steam reforming. There are three types of super heaters namely: Radiant, Convection, and separately fired.

The boiler units of steam electric power plants always have super heaters, because increased steam temperature means higher thermal efficiency for the plant. The effect of super heaters is to heat the steam to certain temperature for higher efficiency of the power station

A super heater consists of parallel-mounted steel tubes, with internal diameters of 20 to 60 mm, connected directly to a boiler drum or to input, output, and intermediate headers.

Depending on the direction in which the steam moves relative to the flue gases, super heaters are said to have parallel flow (uni flow), counterblow, or mixed flow. They are classified as radiant, screen (semi radiant), or convection according to the location of the super heater in the boiler and the type of heat exchange that results.

Super heaters composed entirely of convection stages are usually installed in average- or low-pressure boiler units having superheated steam no hotter than 510°C. High-pressure boiler units with considerable steam superheating use composite super heaters, which include convection, screen, and sometimes radiant sections.

We have supplied convection type super Heater  to SIPCHEM. These heaters are part of Convection Module Heater. Advantage  of these heaters are that they are using Flue gas which normally is flown thru chimney in to air for disbursing and is wasted.

Since it was a shutdown project which makes it very important to client to be finished in time, there were many bottlenecks and challenges starting from critical material to completion on time.

Firstly the material, all the major material was rare (P11 pipes with fins for high temperature, 24” pipe) and was difficult to source. Our procurement department has done a great job by finding the right suppliers at right time and a strong follow

GSW received this kind of project for the first time from SIPCHEM to manufacture three Super Heaters weighing 40, 60 & 80 MT and successfully completed within 45 days.

up has made the material available on time. Not only this, our procurement department has fulfilled the immediate additional requirement by client as addition in scope during the project execution. We have sent our employees to expedite the material.

Secondly skilled labor – Since it was a unique job, relevant skilled labor was critical to source. Our project management interviewed 160 workers and selected 90 highly experienced SAW and TIG welders, which worked day and night shifts (24 hours) to make this project delivered on time. I would like to add that the welding was not a regular weld, 2 inch tubes with very narrow gap which made it hard to weld.

Abrupt challenges are always part of any project. Same happened to this project as well. As per initial design by SIPCHEM, all the three heaters were to transport horizontally. But our Engineering team has found on time that it will be too wide to move within SIPCHEM plant.

Thus, a quick decision was made to deliver it vertically, by making three big structure of 212 MT in 5 - 9 days only to transport it vertically. We appreciate the cooperation of our Structure Steel Division who used their structural skills and made these structures to hold the heater with center of gravity on the upper side of the frames.

We successfully cleared radiography and hydro tests on all 3 heaters, this have given us and client a lot of confidence on the work done.

Other challenge was to lift the heaters from horizontal to vertical position. We have used two crawler cranes of 300 MT each along with 800 MT mobile crane with 8 riggers for synchronized lifting of approx. 200 MT heater with structure.

Last but not the least, Finance extended their usual cooperation and did not let us face any problems with vendors.

We have built a huge trust with client and kept GSW prestige. And the result

is that client is ready to work with us on their next projects & shutdowns. GSW will target more project of same kind with all plants.

I was attending the classes three times a week in Bahrain which made me had

to leave the office at 4:30pm to catch the class then commute back to reach home at 10:30pm, at that time my children would have been asleep and I would have missed my time with them.

After six months of studying, the institute granted me the diploma in business English.

It was an interesting experience for me because what I have learned a lot in which benefited me in my work and benefited those around me since I’m able to communicate in English fluently now.
