A question of heritage, what’s worth saving in Singapore? The historic clock tower of Methodist Girls' School, a spot filled with memories. In a rapidly changing world, the subject of heritage can give rise to much drama and strong emotions. Even more so in Singapore, which has embraced a relentless drive to develop and modernize for the last 45 years. Little has stood in the way of development. Razing down Singapore’s past The familiar redbrick National Library at Stamford Road went; the National Stadium has gone, and they have been many others. With each clang of the pile driver we’ve felt a tug in our hearts, as something that held memories and meaning bites the dust.     Butitneedstobesaidthatwhilesomeofthesebuildingshavebeenusedwellschoolsturnedintomuseumssomeothershavenotbeenaswellprotected.

    Cheappubshousedinbeautifulshophouses,oranoldhistoricalresidencetackedincongruouslytoacondoasaclubhouse.

    Andconservationisoftenpiecemeal,leavingusclingingontofacadeswhiletherestofabuildinggetshackedoff.

    SaveOldSchool

    Inrecentmonths,thetopicofheritageandconservationarosewithvigorinthenewsagain.

    ThislatestchordofconcernanddissatisfactionwasleadbytheremovaloftheoldtraintracksbetweenSingaporeandMalaysia,thentheexhumationofsomeofSingaporesoldestgravesatBukitBrownCemeteryandtheconversionofthatlandrichnotjustinhistoricalheritagebut,withitslushjungle,alsonaturalheritagetomakewayformoreroads.

    Andnow,thepossibledestructionofOldSchool(http://www.oldschool.sg/)theformerpremisesoftheMethodistGirlsSchool(http://www.mgs.sch.edu.sg/)whichdatesfromthe1920sat11MountSophiaforthebuildingofresidentialproperties,mostlikelycondominiums.

    FiveofthesixbuildingsthatcompriseOldSchoolarecurrentlyslatedfordemolitionwhenthepremisesleaserunsoutinJune2012withonlytheformerchemistrylab,theOlsonBuilding,markedforconservation.

    Intheadmittedlyambitioushopeofblockingthis,twoformerMethodistGirlsSchoolalumnihavegottentogethertoform"SaveOldSchool."

    Fightingforheritage

    CarolThamandLimLiHsienstartedtheircampaignonFacebookatthebeginningofOctober,andwithinweekstheirpagegeneratedmorethan4,000likes.

    WehavealsohadafirstroundofmeetingswithMinistryofNationalDevelopmentandtheConservationDivisionof

    theUrbanRedevelopmentAuthority,andtheresanothermeetingwithNationalHeritageBoard,saysTham.

    Peoplearestartingtolobbyforuswithincertainauthorities.Withmoremediabuildup,eventsareweareplanning,tieinswitheventsthatarehappeninginOldSchool,liketheindiemusicfestivalUpToTheSkyFestival,andpetitions,weareseeingthiscampaigngaintraction.

    Webasicallywanttoconserveasmuchofthesiteaspossible,saysThambecauseasinglebuildingreallydoesnotheritagemake.

    Heritageisalsotheenvironmentandthesetting.Andwearearguingforchangeofusebecauseconservationhastobeviableforeverybody.

    Havingasinglebuildingwithinaresidentialcomplexservesnopublicpurpose.Singaporeansandpeoplefromoverseasneedtobeabletoappreciatethatbuiltheritage,

    andseewhatSingaporeusedtobe.

    Whyitisworthsaving

    Forobviousreasons,itwouldmakegoodsenseforOldSchooltoremaintheartsenclavethatitis.

    IfOldSchoolgoes,saysMabelTayfromOldSchoolmanagement,artistsandmusiciansaregoingtoloseaspacewheretheycangoandcreate,workandcurate.

    [The]spacethatweofferisforfree.Noonehasdoneanythinglikethat,noteventhegovernment.Inaddition,wealsoraisemoneyforartscharities.Andweareselfsustaining.

    Weoperatewithoutgovernmentfundingandbrokeevensometimeearly2010.

    Dotheythinktheycansucceedretainingthispieceofheritage?
