Aria Health receives Accreditation from the iCANl

Congratulations to Dr. Jonathan Cox, MD, FACC, Kristine Dyson CNMT, RT and all team members for their hard work in acquiring

accreditation from the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Nuclear Medicine Laboratories (ICANL) for Aria Health.

ICANL accreditation is a means by which general nuclear medicine, nuclear cardiology and PET facilities can evaluate and demonstrate the level of patient care they provide.

The process begins with a comprehensive self-evaluation by laboratory staff. Completion of the application for accreditation requires information on all aspects of laboratory operation as well as the submission of actual case studies for review. After the application is submitted to the ICANL, it undergoes a confidential peer-review by the ICANL’s trained reviewers, including physicians and technologists, before a final decision is made by the Board of Directors.

the Stereotaxis Gentletouch Magnetic treatment System – Coming Soon to Aria Health

Aria Health Board Members, Senior Leadership, electrophysiologists and staff pose for a photo aboard the Stereotaxis Mobile Cardiac Education Center, an interactive learning center filled with information about general heart health, on October 24.

The Stereotaxis GentleTouch Magnetic Treatment System will allow Aria’s physicians to heal hearts more precisely and safely than ever before. This system’s innovative technology uses computer-controlled magnets – which are positioned outside the body – to programmatically steer catheters and guidewires throughout the delicate cardiovascular system. With the computer to assist in precise navigation, the doctor is then able to focus on the patient and the outcome rather than the mechanics of the procedure.

Stereotaxis is used to treat a number of heart irregularities including:• Arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter, as well as supraventricular

tachycardias, and ventricular tachycardias• Heart failure, with interventional procedures such as cardiac resynchronization

therapy, and• Coronary Artery Disease, with procedures designed to reopen blocked arteries in

coronary vessels with partial or total occlusion.

Stereotaxis combines the benefits of precise, computer-aided magnetic guidance with gentle catheter contact, and allows us to navigate and treat the heart without the risks associated with manual and mechanical devices. The potential benefits to patients include:

• shorter procedures,• a faster recovery time,• less exposure to X-ray radiation and dyes,• a reduced risk of serious complications from perforation of blood vessels

or heart tissue, and• reduced likelihood of referral to highly invasive open-heart surgical procedures.

In addition, Stereotaxis technology offers an innovation in healing by giving us gentle access to remote areas of the heart that have been difficult, if not impossible, to reach before. In some cases, we can now care for patients who would otherwise be referred to highly invasive coronary artery bypass surgery.

And, with this system we now have the potential to help patients suffering from atrial fibrillation or other arrhythmias who would otherwise have to rely on drug therapy alone, which may only partly addresses their symptoms.

Stay tuned to the Pulse and the Aria Team Blog (www.AriAHeAltHeXCHANGe.org) for more information.

Aria’s torresdale Campus Honored with the Gift of life AwardAt its 65th annual breakfast on October 28, Delaware Valley Healthcare Council (DVHC) honored Aria Health – Torresdale with its Gift of Life Award, which recognizes hospitals that provide superior support to patients and their families throughout the organ donation process.

DVHC partnered with Gift of Life Donor Program – the region’s organ procurement organization (OPO) – to create the award in 2006 as a means of recognizing hospitals for excellence in family care and outstanding rates of performance in organ donation. The staff and leadership at these hospitals best exemplify a commitment to donation as part of end-of-life care.

The need for more donors continues to be an urgent one. Today, there are nearly 6,000 patients in this region awaiting the gift of a life-saving organ transplant, joining the 103,000 people nationwide.

Since 1974, Gift of Life has served as the link between donors and patients awaiting life-saving transplants in the eastern half of Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware. In that tenure, the OPO has coordinated more than 28,000 lifesaving organ transplants and hundreds of thousands of tissue transplants.

For more information on organ and tissue donation, please call the Gift of Life at 1-800-DONOrS-1 or visit its website, www.donors1.org.
