Ten Days of Awe As the 10 Days of Awe from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur are once again drawing near, each of us prepares ourselves by reviewing not only the past year, but our en-tire journey in “dis a velt” (this world). Of course we all have experienced bumps and twists in our journey and have to adjust to the changes that life brings us. We prepare for the Days of Awe and contact “Hashem” in our own way – by prayers we invent or through the words in the prayer book. I personally transmit the thoughts in my head to our maker relating to my parents of Blessed Memory and my heartfelt desire to be a better person in all of the roles in my life – a husband, father, grandfather (Zayde), friend, and Temple President. We all always try to be at our best but somehow during a 365 day year it is easy to slip on occasion. For the 10 days we are being judged from above as well as the days between now and then try to be the absolutely best person you can possibly be. Enjoy the High Holy Days Services even if that means being in a trance with your own thoughts some of the time. Always remember to live by The Golden Rule (do unto others as you would have them do unto you). My wife Carole and my wish for each of you is Le Shona Tova Ticosaivoh.

Remember Your Tickets

Please be sure to bring your High Holy Days service tickets with you to Temple for every service. Our ushers will check tickets at the door.

If you do not have your ticket when arriving for services, there will be a table in the lobby where a member of the office staff will check for your name on the list of those who were issued tickets.

So bring your tickets, skip the line and le shana tova tik atevu ve’techatemu.

The question is: Why use a lunar calendar at all, since it would seem to be much easier to abide by its solar corollary? After all, no adjustment, except for the addition of one day ev-ery four years (the leap year), is need-ed for the latter. The reason is that unlike the sun, the moon changes. Possessing cycles, waxing and waning, appearing both as a thin crescent and completely full, the moon is endowed with an intrinsic organicity that the immu-table sun lacks. As human beings, we identify with the moon in more personal terms. We find inspiration in its movement from diminishment to wholeness, from times of limited presence to periods of magnificent ef-florescence. The ancients recognized that the phases of the moon, through tides and other natural phenomena, im-pacted earthly life in a way the sun did not. This so-called lunar effect was also associated with aberrations in human behavior. Hence, deriva-tion of words like lunatic and lunacy. Marking a fresh opportunity to move toward fulfillment, that Rosh HaShanah begins on the first day of a new month, i.e., a new moon, is no coincidence. The barely seen sliver of the moon we observe of the first of Tishri acts to humble us. We cannot seek to become better people, better Jews if we are already full of ourselves,

if we assert there is no possibility of self-growth. Unlike Rosh HaShanah, Sukkot always occurs on a full moon, some-thing quite appropriate and telling since it celebrates the harvest. While the High Holy Days, as a matter of tradition, will show us the ritual way, so to speak, from a barely seen out-line of the moon to a brimming ex-pression of it, our aim is to attempt to personally participate in this trans-formation. Will we just passively ob-serve this sacred liturgical journey like an annual religious exhibition or will we prompted by it to make a au-thentic effort to change, to aspire to see revealed in us in the coming year a more purposeful difference in the quality of our character and endeavors? A great deal of effort is required to turn a sliver of anything into something much more substantive. Though surely striking and compel-ling, the motivating essence of the High Holy Days is strenuous holy work. Only through this labor can we attain Sukkot and the harvest, the ingathering of a more focused, deter-mined and truthful self. That this is hardly an easy thing to achieve is pre-cisely is why our religion calls us to do it. A happy, healthy and meaningful New Year to all.

From the Rabbi’s Study

Temple Beth Israel Bulletin page 3

We’ve heard a lot of talk about how the “holidays are really early this year.” Yes, in terms of the solar calen-dar, Rosh HaShanah will occur sooner than expected. However, according to the Hebrew calendar, the holiday will begin on the same date as it has for thousands of years, the first of Tishri. Since the solar calendar is eleven days longer that its lunar sibling, He-brew dates appear to fluctuate in re-lation to secular time. But there are limits. If not calendrically adjusted, the High Holy Days and other Jewish festivals would occur earlier and ear-lier with each passing year. Can you imagine observing Yom Kippur in February and Passover in October? To keep the Hebrew calendar relatively in sync with the solar one, an additional month is added to the Hebrew calendar approximately every three years. Therefore, though there is still some variation, dates of Jewish holy days are still kept within seasonal parameters. Interestingly, Islam, too, utilizes a lunar calendar. However, no adjust-ment is employed to keep it in cor-respondence with the solar year. This explains why an observance like Ra-madan takes place in different seasons over the course of several years.

Lunar Legacy

Cemetery Service September 8, 10:30 am Visiting the graves of loved ones during the High Holy Days is a hallowed traditional observance. Rabbi Katz will conduct a brief memorial service in Beth Israel’s section of Palms Memorial Park (lo-cated at Fruitville and Honore) on Sunday, Septem-ber 8 at 10:30 a.m. He will also be available to offer

personal prayers with family members. Even if your loved one’s grave is not located in Sarasota, we en-courage you to join with others at the cemetery to pay tribute and express undying affection to those who memory is an eternal blessing.

Beth Israel Women The summer has flown by and Sisterhood is gearing up for a great season. One highlight of this year will be another fabulous weeklong trip to Cuba from February 16 to 23, 2014. If you would like to be part of this mission, contact Marion Levine at [email protected] or phone her at 917-721-8390 for more information. Marion will be away for part of the month so please leave a message and she will get back to you. Other highlights include the January 26th BIW Evening Out - dinner and show at the Van Wezel; and the annual BIW Fashion Show February 3, 2014. The monthly luncheon meetings will resume in the fall. Check the October Bulletin for more de-tailed information on BIW activities. Please don’t forget our annual High Holy Days food drive. Grocery bags, donated by Publix, will be handed out Erev Rosh Hashanah and Rosh Hasha-nah morning. Bring them back full of non-perish-able and non-breakable food items any time but no later than Yom Kippur. If you haven’t yet sent in your $40 annual dues, please make out a check to Beth Israel Women and send it to the Temple in an envelope addressed to B.I.W. Nessa is recuperating from injuries sustained in an accident last month. We all wish her a speedy re-covery. While Nessa focuses on getting better, BIW vice presidents Sylvia Pastor, Bonney Libman and Marion Levine will oversee BIW activities.

Something New for the New Year The High Holy Days symbolize re-newal. We honor our heritage, we ener-gize ourselves, when we consider fresh ideas. In this spirit, I want to offer a new program that expands the dimen-sions of our Temple library and moves us well beyond four walls. I would like to teach interested Temple members how to access the Temple Library and other powerful learning and entertain-ment resources using your home com-puter. You can tap into the library collec-tion via author, title, or subject. So do some browsing from your armchair. The opportunity becomes even more exciting when you consider the feast of ideas available from the rapidly expanding population of global web-sites. When everyday conversations we all have start to become humdrum and repetitive, I can show you how to reach into the best minds around the world. One website that is revolutionizing education is coursera.org. Professors

from Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, and other educational sites, are making their courses available, often without charge, and even with the opportunity for credit. Talk to your grandkids about this. They are ahead of our generation. My summer has been enriched by a mind expanding course, “A Brief His-tory of Humankind,” taught by Dr. Yu-val Noah Harari from the Department of History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. It would be quite a schlep for you and me to go there to hear him, but he comes to us with some simple computer key strokes. Do you see why I am excited? Do you see why I want to get more of our Temple members in-volved, starting November 1st? If you are interested in learning some of the ways the Internet can en-rich the enjoyment of learning, contact me at my email, [email protected] or via phone. If you want to become even more involved in the activities of our Temple Library, become part of our Library Volunteer Staff. You will learn from your fellow volunteers, and they

will learn from you. It’s a big, wide wonderful world we live in. Start the New Year by learn-ing how to better navigate the richness around us.

“And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.” — F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

Many of us saw the movie recently and marveled at the aura of unreality it seemed to portray. As I sat watching the story unfold, I thought about how I would love to have the money that Gatsby had spent on his parties. What would I do with it? Well, for one thing, I would give a great portion to our En-dowment Fund at Temple Beth Israel. I would put enough in there so that future chairs of this fund would only have to be caretakers, not fund raisers. Unfortunately, wishing doesn’t make it so, de-spite lyrics to the contrary. And so I dream of ways to grow our Endowment. I get the feeling that our membership doesn’t feel a sense of urgency to create a cushion for future possible shocks. If anyone of you

has an idea that may spark interest in endowing the future of TBI, I would welcome your call or message. In the meantime I will continue to send my own checks to celebrate, commemorate or just plain re-member an event, an honor, or a special person. Read over the list of special funds in our Endowment fund and see if there is something there that sparks your conviction that Temple Beth Israel’s future needs your support. Look on page 3 of your directory. “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter — tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . . And one fine morning — So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” — F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

Summertime

Kudos and Thanks A wonderful group of lay and professional volunteers stepped up to lead our Shabbat services during Rabbi Katz’s vacation. Our summer service lead-ers were Leon Cooper, Tina Fein Dinitz and Rick Dinitz, Linda Buxbaum, Rabbi Mi-chael Eisenstat, Rabbi Aaron Koplin, and Dr. Jerome Rosen-thal. Special thanks to Linda Buxbaum who coordinated all of these volunteers, and also to Ruth Engman who is the coor-dinator for all of our Shabbat services throughout the year.

We will be having our annual High Holy Days food drive. Grocery bags, donated by Publix and grate-fully acknowledged, will be handed out Erev Rosh Hashanah and Rosh Hashanah morning by the ushers. Please fill them with non-perish-able and non-breakable food items and return to the Temple lobby any time between then and Yom Kip-pur. As we all know from reading the newspaper, the need this year by families in Sarasota is unfathom-able, and this is our chance to step up as a Temple. We will be donating the items to All Faiths Food Bank in Sarasota.

Social Action

As Rosh Hashanah approaches, some of us may remember some of the Yiddish expressions of our parents and grandparents. When wished Gut Yuntif (Good Holiday), our grandparents often replied Gut Yohr (Good Year). Gut Yohr was in fact the stock response to almost every Yiddish greeting. If we happened to join them on a morning walk, a neighbor’s Gut Morgen (Good morn-ing) would be answered with a hearty Gut Yohr! When evening came around, there was a different greeting - Gut Ovnt (Good evening), but the response was still the same – Gut Yohr. If we went to shul with them on Shabbas, we may remember this exchange: Gut Shabbas – Gut Yohr. So, too, on Saturday night after Havdalah, as each Gut vokh (good week) was acknowledged with – you know it - Gut Yohr. How did this stock response find its way into Yiddish? For certain, it cannot have come from Hebrew. The only time that we ever wish each other Shana Tova, (Good Year) in Hebrew is around Rosh Hashanah, and yet Yiddish speakers can exchange the greetings of Gut Yuntif – Gut Yohr during Passover or during Shavuot. The Israeli scholar, Shumuel Gelbart, explains that although the response of Gut Yohr appears to be indigenous to Yiddish, it may have roots in the rabbinic maxim: Whoever receives a greeting should respond with a greater one (Yachpil et-ha bracha). It is traditional to respond to Shabbat Shalom with Shabbat Shalom u’mevorach (a good Sabbath and may you be blessed). Le Shana Tova is frequently answered with Le Shana Tova tik atevu ve’techatemu (May you be written down and inscribed for a good year) once again increasing the blessing. With all this in mind, if someone should happen to wish you a Gut Yohr on Rosh Hashanah, this is the one time during the year that you should not respond with the stock reply – Gut Yohr. You should add to the blessing and wish a good and blessed year. It is in this spirit that the members of the Ritual Committee and I wish all of you a gut un a gebensht yohr.

Stand Up and Be Counted Leadership Circle has been in existence in our Temple for the past four years. When it was conceived by Bill Sandy, the economy was shaky, the Recession was in full bloom, and the Temple Board was worried if there would be enough funds collected from dues and other fund raising projects to meet the expenses of our Temple. This concept of, “Those who can…will” has been much like “manna from heaven.” Our needs have not changed, however, our congregation has changed. The reduction of membership numbers by attrition (death, relocation, etc.) has been significant since 2009 when the first letter of appeal was sent to our members. Yes, we have acquired new members and we welcome them to our Temple family. However, we still need the support of everyone to insure our Temple is a dynamic center of Jewish life on Longboat Key. Therefore, we must continue with our annual Leadership Circle Appeal. Last year 112 congregants pledged and donated to The Leadership Circle. The funds donated provided financial stability to our Temple and allowed us to remain financially viable for the year.

2013

We ask you to consider participation. Recognition is on a calendar-year basis, however, we need your commitment by November 30th to be included for the year 2014. Elise Galinsky, Leadership Circle Chairperson
