    Section 1: Introduction

    1.1 Background Information

1.1.1 The Emerging Significance of Singapores Arts Scene

In the past, economic development was prioritized in Singapore by the

government. Hence, Singapores economic landscape flourished (Anne Malpart

    and Jiazhen Gu, January 2005).

With changing times, socio-cultural development became the current focus of

Singapore. She aims to develop herself into a cultural hub with a vibrant musicindustry a shift from the earlier emphasis on economic development. The arts

are important as they make for a more thinking and sophisticated society.

The highest authorities have made pronouncements supporting arts

development. In a speech addressing youth leaders, Prime Minister Goh Chok

Tong outlined his vision for Singapore's socio-cultural development whereby the

    country is

One in which universities will be throbbing with ideas, and where there is a

    thriving arts scene.(Lily Kong, 2000)

Minister for Information and the Arts George Yeo echoed this stand:

To be competitive in the next phase of our national development, we need to

    promote the arts.(Parliamentary Debates, 21/3/91, col. 944-4)

    5

    6/104

Consequently, the Singapore government has become more proactively involved

in developing the local arts scene, promoting Singapore as a cultural hub.

Many previously rigid regulations regarding media and entertainment have been

loosened. A world-class performing arts centre The Esplanade, boasting a

comprehensive range of professional support facilities and services, has also

been developed (Anne Malpart and Jiazhen Gu, January 2005).

However, our group feels that despite the aforementioned efforts to promote Arts,

public apathy towards the arts remains high.

An online survey was held to garner opinions concerning the local arts scene,

with results shown in the next section.

Buddy has something no other drummer had, or will ever have. I don't know how it came about and I don't think he does either. It doesn't matter- Mel Lewis

    1.3 Rationale for Our Project

As Arts increasingly assumes more prominence in Singapore, our group decided

to gear our project towards the arts arena. We based our project on music - the

    most accessible Art form.

    11

  • 8/4/2019 A Rich Legacy

    12/104

The survey (Section 1.3) revealed that the lack of free arts activities restricted

participation in local arts events. Although the number of arts events has

increased (Chart 1, Section 1.2), these are ticketed and expensive, alienating

    most people.

We seek to ameliorate this problem with our project. To meet this end, we chose

Bernard Buddy Rich, a legendary drummer, as our groundbreaker.

The aims of our project are:

    Help promote local musical arts

Provide a platform to showcase undiscovered potential drumming talents

Raise the profile of drumming in Singapore through introducing Buddy

    Rich to the masses

Commemorate Richs 20 th death anniversary

And, well of course, Count Basie, and I think all of the black bands of the late thirties and early forties, bands with real players. They had an influence on everybody, not just drummers- Buddy Rich

    Buddy Rich (1917-1987) (http:// images.google.com.sg/images?

    gbv=2&svnum=10&hl=en&safe=off&q=buddy+rich)

World-Class jazz drummer Peter Erskine once said, As Paganini was to the

violin, Buddy was to the drums: quite simply, the greatest artist to have ever

played their instrument. His is the drumming bar which the rest of us mere

mortals will always look up to . These sentences sum up Buddy Rich: the

greatest drummer to ever draw breath.

    (Peter Erskine, www.buddyrich.com/community/tributes.html)

Born on September 30 th 1917, Bernard Buddy Rich started performing at a

tender age. By the age of four, Buddy was ubiquitous on Broadway - the 2 nd

highest paid child entertainer during his early career. Although Rich had never

received formal drumming lessons and did not practice outside of performances,he was still able to play with unparalleled dexterity and speed.

Well, I never really practiced because I never had the opportunity to practice- Buddy Rich

Rich excelled in Jazz music before branching into Rock music later on in his

career. He constantly received outstanding recognition, such as the Downbeat

Magazine Hall of Fame Award, the Modern Drummer Magazine Hall of Fame

Award and the Jazz Unlimited Immortals of Jazz Award.

Buddy featured in Hollywood films such as Ship Ahoy (1942) and Oscar-

nominated film Visit To A Small Planet (1960). He also dabbled in television

programmes, like The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (26 episodes, 1969-

1988), and The Muppet Show (1980).

With unrivaled technicality and peerless musicality, Rich conquered the stage,

entertaining millions and influencing future generations of drummers.

Rich took his final curtain call on April 2 nd, 1987, passing away due to heart

    failure.

1.4.1 Dramatic Shift Caused by Buddy Rich

    1.4.1.1 Technique

Before Rich, drumming was limited as beats could only be produced at a lower

maximum speed, curtailed by the lack of appropriate technique to really push the

    speed of drumming.

With the advent of Rich, drumming was revolutionized by his perfection and

introduction of many new drumming techniques.

    Such techniques include:

    1) "Buddy Stick Trick"

    2) The "Push-Pull" technique, pioneered by Rich himself

    3) The Crossover-Riffs

Dramatic shifts in drum set manufacture to new, modern electronic hybrid sets, made possible due to Richs improvements on techniques and speed of drumming

    1.4.2.1 On Drummers

Buddy's panache has influenced the way present-day drummers approach

drumming. JoJo Mayer is one of the many drummers applying Buddy's

revolutionary drumming techniques in his playing.

Buddy pushed the limits of solo drumming. For example, before the "Push-Pull"

technique was invented, drummers could not roll as fast or incorporate new ideas

into their playing as both hands were involved in playing single strokes at high

speeds - speeds that can otherwise be easily reached with one hand through theuse of the technique.

Without Rich, the art of drumming would never have been able to come thus far.

Even now, 20 years after his death, Buddy's style, technique and tone still remain

models for professional drummers worldwide. Buddy's drumming has pervaded

    world culture.

1.4.2.2 On the Media and Mainstream Community

    17

  • 8/4/2019 A Rich Legacy

    18/104

Through his involvement in Hollywood films and television programmes, Buddy

has impacted the mass media and those who subscribe to it by promoting his

image through film. Using the media, Rich has shifted awareness of the

American public towards the art form of drumming and fostering new interest.

    1.4.2.3 In The Future

Professional drummers today adopt Richs techniques. Rich has provided

drummers with a solid drumming template to build and improve on. In the future,

these techniques will become more specialized and stylized as drummingevolves.

Rich is also a good role model for young drumming aspirants. There are many

tribute videos and stories on him available. Youths of today can learn important

lessons from these media, and grow to become the professionals of tomorrow.

supported our project on many fronts:

To me, your project is quite meaningful in terms of trying to promote

drumming as an art among Singaporean youths.

Yes, it adds to the effort undertaken to promote drumming.

I wouldnt mind going down to Vivo to give some pointers

I should be able to help you guys judge for your competition

Section 2: Our Event (A Rich Legacy)

    2.1 Introduction

We decided to commemorate Buddy Rich by holding a series of celebratory

activities on 24 th November 2007. Our event is entitled after Buddys last name- A

Rich Legacy. The word Rich also describes our event; exciting and informative.

The event comprises two components, an exhibition on Rich and a drumming

competition. It will be held on the rooftop of Vivocity where there are large crowds

of shoppers, enabling our event to reach out to large audiences.

    2.1.2 Target Audience

Our target audiences are youths aged 13-22 and the shoppers at Vivocity.

Youths are a demographic with time and passion. We hope that by acquainting

them with Rich and Singapores musical arts scene, they will consequently

become more involved in local music. Our event also serves as a platform for

youths to showcase their musical talents.

Furthermore, we wish to propagate the knowledge and profile of Buddy Rich inSingapore. Our exhibition will portray all aspects of Rich to the public.

Crash! Crash! Splash! Lets hear it for our next section- THE EXHIBTION! (http://images.google.com.sg/images?hl=en&q=cymbals&gbv=2)

Truly a remarkable young man and one for whom I have sincere admiration, musically and other wise. I like the way Buddy literally dances drums. Of the younger crop, he is, to put it mildly, outstanding.I suspect a good deal of my profound esteem for him is governed by the fact that, while he is young and

performs refreshingly, there is that quality of sureness present which denotes absolute control, acquired only by long and good experience.- Gene Krupa

    24/104

    2.2.1 Introduction

The exhibition will be located in front of the amphitheatre on Vivocitys rooftop. In

planning our event, we considered how to engage our audience. We have

decided that our exhibition should provide a complete sensory experience on the

    life and works of Rich.

2.2.2 Rationale and Aims of the Exhibition

    1) Introducing Buddy Rich to the General Public

The exhibition is held to promote the legendary drummer, Buddy Rich as our General Survey (Section 7.2.1) tells us that most Singaporeans are oblivious to

    Rich and his contributions.

We are also promoting Buddys sheer impact on drumming through the

exhibition. Ultimately, we hope to raise the appreciation and understanding levels

    on Rich.

    2) Inspiring, Educating and Drawing Attention to Budding Singaporean

    Artistes

By stirring up interest in Rich via the exhibits, we hope to inspire youths who are

involved in music. Rich can serve as a role model for youth drummers.

Almost everything I've done, I've done through my own creativity. I don't think I ever had to listen to

anyone else to learn how to play drums. I wish I could say that for about ten thousand other drummers-Buddy Rich

    3) Promoting the Musical Arts in Singapore and Raising the Standard of

    Drumming

Another aim is to elevate the interest level of drumming in Singapore of the

    general public.

    2.2.3 Exhibits

    2.2.3.1 Buddy Rich Trail

The sheltered walkway spanning Vivocity in front of the amphitheatre will be used

    for this exhibit.

The trail comprises twenty footprints (50cm x 30 cm) made from black plastic

boards. They will be lined up along the sheltered walkway, creating the trail.

Written within the footprints are famous quotes by Rich. This provides the

audience with interesting food for thought as they negotiate the trail.

aged between 13 to 22 are eligible to participate.

    Contestants are required to

    1) Drum to a song accompaniment

    2) Perform a 5 minute drum solo of their choice for the adjudicators.

2.3.2 Rationale and Aims of the Competition

    1) Introducing Buddy Rich to the General PublicDrum solos were an integral part of Richs playing and we wish to showcase this

aspect of Buddy using the competition.

    2) Inspiring, Educating and Drawing Attention to Budding Singaporean

    Artistes

The attachment with Ivys Vendetta gives the winner invaluable hands-on

experience in playing in a professional band.

The competition serves as a talent scout for young drummers, providing them a

chance to pursue drumming. Doing well in the competition will boost their

reputation, opening doors to future drumming opportunities.

Local bands such as Armchair Critic and Green Onion will be given the chance to

perform and gain exposure in Singapores arts scene, thereby enlarging their fan

    bases.

    3) Promoting the Musical Arts in Singapore and Raising the Standard of

    Drumming

Drummers can be inspired to achieve higher grounds in terms of their technicality

and musicality thus sharpening their soloing capabilities. This ultimately elevates

    Singapores drumming standard.

2.3.3 AuditionsAuditions are held in VJCs T Block classrooms (T26 and T27B) and will be

judged by Tony Zee (Principal Judge). Final six contestants proceed to the final

    round.

The drum set used belongs to Victoria Junior College Symphonic Band (VJCSB).

  • 8/4/2019 A Rich Legacy

    36/104

The judges invited are Tony Zee (Section 7.4.4) and Victor Tang (Section 7.5).

Zee is a seasoned professional who was previously the head instructor for drums

at Yamahas contemporary school of music. He judged the drum competition in

the Singapores first-ever Drumfest (Singapore Drumfest 07). Victor is currently

teaching at the Yamaha contemporary school of music.

Both judges have more than 20 years of playing experience between them.

Being drum teachers, they can critically assess the contestants.

    2.3.5 Judging Criteria

Contestants will be judged on four separate components:

    Technique

    Artistic appeal

    Coordination

    Originality

Each component carries 20 points and all four components total 80 points.

Besides professional judgment, the audience can also vote for their favorite

contestant by sticking stars on the respective contestants board. Their votes

count for 20 points, totaling to 100 points. The contestant with the highest points

    wins.

2.5 Factors Considered For the Event (A Rich Legacy)

    Date

November 24 th (Saturday) was chosen to hold our event because it falls during

the year-end holidays. Therefore, school-going students are free to attend our

event. Furthermore, it is on a weekend when working adults are also free.

    Space

The rooftop of VivoCity is large enough to accommodate everyone attending our

event. The amphitheatre has a stage and provides ample space for seating.

    Location

We considered several factors when deciding where to hold our event: booking

fee, holding capacity, accessibility and popularity.

Vivocity is the largest mall in Singapore and is teeming with people. It is readily

accessible via MRT (Harbourfront) and bus. Within Vivocity, our flyers can direct

    people to the event.

    Transport

A rented lorry will be used to move the exhibits, equipment and helpers to and

    41

    from VJC, solving logistics issues.

I have other things that I have to do - practice my martial arts, take care of my cars. I don't put too muchemphasis on practice anyhow- Buddy Rich

    Manpower

The president of VJC Interact Club has agreed to provide manpower help with

our event (Section 7.4.8). Ten members will help with the transportation and

setting up of equipment, facilitating the event and keeping watch over the

    exhibits.

    Participants and Attendees

Our survey results indicated that many young drummers are willing to participate

in the competition as they feel that it is a good opportunity to learn and showcase

    their talents.

Our audience will mainly be the friends and families of the participants, interested

    parties and shoppers.

    Equipment

The drum set and amplifiers used for the competition, performances by invited

bands and auditions belongs to Victoria Junior College Symphonic Band

(VJCSB) (Section 7.7). Verbal agreement for its use has been obtained from the

    percussion section leader, Matthew Ho.

I've heard him in every circumstance. And of all the drummers I've been around over the years,

Buddy Rich is the consummate genius of the drums. He's like Tazio Nuvolari was with the racing car. He

    had complete control- Mel Torne

    2.6 Limitations

    For the Exhibition

    1) We were unable to find a source to borrow video and display equipment to

showcase Richs videos. Thus, we have to make do without displaying videos in

    the exhibition

    2) There is no adequate shelter at the rooftop of Vivocity. This threatens the

protection of our exhibits (e.g. footprints, information boards). Should rain arrive

during the exhibition, our exhibits will be damaged.

    For the Competition

    1) The drumming competition is held in the afternoon when the temperature is

high, deterring people from watching the competition.

    2) A lack of participants for the competition will make it impossible to hold.

Although our survey results indicate a high interest level in our competition, it

may not necessarily translate into participants. Hence, our competition is highly

dependent on the level of participation.

    43

For both the Competition and Exhibition

    1) The amphitheatre of Vivocity is fully booked for December.

He'd say to me, "What do you think of so-and-so's playing?" I'd say, "Yeah, he's ok'. Buddy would say "Ohcome on, he sounds like he's rumbling down the staircase." I'd laugh and laugh at his honesty .- Joe

    Morello

    2.7 Solutions

    For the Exhibition

    1) To compensate for not being able to display videos, we will use differentmethods, like creating the Buddy Rich Trail and providing refreshment to

guarantee that the audience receives a sensory experience.

    2) If it rains, the exhibition shall be moved inside VivoCity itself where we booked

another space on the 3 rd floor.

    For the Competition

    1) We will rent five outdoor fans to lower the temperature. Furthermore, the

competition is held in a sheltered area (see page 19) and thus, rain or shine, the

    competition can still go on.

    2) We are actively promoting our competition to youths all around Singapore. We

are also offering attractive prizes to the top 3 winners of the competition.

    Section 6: Acknowledgements

Our group would like to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to thefollowing people/organizations for having helped us some point or another in our project:

    Cathy Rich

Cathy Rich is the daughter of Buddy Rich and has, throughout the years, beenactively trying to preserve her fathers legacy. She has been pushing for Buddymemorial concerts, working with various companies such as DWdrums in a bid tomake the concerts a reality. She is at the forefront of the production and retailingof Buddy related CDs and posters and is intending to set up a retail store, educational facility, soundstage for performances and video shoots, and arecording studio in a place called Buddys Place. Maintaining and frequentlyupdating the Buddy Rich site ( www.buddyrich.com ), Cathy hopes to promote her fathers life and work to the general public who are interested in knowing moreabout him.

Note: What we are trying to achieve in our project goes in line with what Ms.Cathy Rich has dedicated her life to doing - preserving Buddy Richs legacy. Thus, we felt that seeking her endorsement, agreement and support beforeproceeding with our event was crucial as it added meaning and value to what wewould be doing over the span of time we would be working with on our PWproject. Section 7: Appendices

7.1 Dramatic Shift of Buddy Rich

    7.1.1 Technique

These techniques have been picked up and executed by many professionaldrummers all around the world. Examples of drummers that have beeninfluenced by Buddy Richs drumming techniques include drumming legendssuch as Jojo Mayer, Neil Peart, Dave Wreckl and many others.

    1) The Buddy Stick-Trick

Named after its inventor, the stick trick involves hitting the two sticks together in acircular motion at ridiculously high speeds, resulting in a long, continuous roll.

    2) The Push-Pull Technique (One- handed roll)This "push-pull" method of hitting the drums allowed drummers to be able to playsingle strokes with one hand at speeds that were previously inconceivable. Thisfrees the other hand and allows the drummer to orchestrate it around the drumkit, thus opening new possibilities in playing and allowing for a greater expressionof creativity as more beats can now be played simultaneously. Buddy Richpioneered this technique and was the first drummer to successfully master thistechnique and execute it on both hands, hence influencing many drummers after him to strive to do the same.

    1) The Crossover RiffEssentially, Buddy Rich does this by criss-crossing his arms from one drum toanother, striking the drums simultaneously. In doing so, Buddy Rich moves onearm over, or sometimes even under the other arm, striking the drums at greatspeed and dexterity.

    56

    57/104

    7.1.2 Musicality

Buddy Richs musical intentions and genius around the drums have beenimmortalized as many modern drummers today are still seeking to emulate andunderstand the way Buddy Rich orchestrated his beats around the drums and

improved on older techniques that, during his time, opened up new doors inthe area of drumming .

    1) Double Stroke (technique)

Traditionally, the double stroke is executed using both hands in the stickingpattern RRLL (where R refers to the striking of the drum with the right hand and Lreferring to the striking of the drum with the left hand), alternating the stickingafter every two strokes as the name suggests. However, Rich improvised andcreated a new way of playing the double stroke. His way, the way that is socommonly played by professionals around the world today, involves the striking

of one stick using the other stick to produce two beats on the drum. Thus, thefirst beat on the drum is accented by the sound of one stick tapping against theother, producing a very unique tone that adds a whole new dimension of sound tothe acoustic drum set-up.

    2) Matching of Tones (orchestration)

There is only one word to describe Rich's interpretation of music - genius. Theway he orchestrates his beats around the drum set attests to this. His style of orchestration has remained a model for many drummers in the world today. Heimproved on a simple yet effective way of blending the drum with the band, whichis now the basic model for big band drummers; that is, the matching of tones.

When the trumpets came in, Rich would match the tone of the trumpets bysplashing the cymbal. When the bass sounded, he responded by resonating thebase drum. The fact that this model still lives on 20 years after his death provesthat it was indeed a groundbreaking way of drumming.

    3) The Accentuation of Intensity within the Music (technique)

Using the one- handed roll technique, Buddy Rich was able to add flavour to hisdrumming by adding intensity to the music through the use of very fast singlestrokes; made possible by the push-pull technique. Thus, together with the restof the band, he was able to bring greater intensity to the music whenever it wasrequired.

    57

  • 8/4/2019 A Rich Legacy

    58/104

    4) Drum Solos (technique and orchestration)

Buddy Rich used a wide array of different techniques to keep his solos fromsounding predictable and thus, boring. Apart from his powerful, explosivedisplays, he would also transit into quieter passages. An example a passage that

he so often uses is one that begins with a simple single-stroke roll on the snaredrum picking up power and speed. As he gets louder and faster, he moves hissticks closer towards the centre of the drum. Then, as he decrescendos, hemoves his sticks closer towards the edge of the drum and then eventually playingon just the rim itself while still maintaining speed.

This powerful way of adding a new element into his solos has been copied bymany great drummers over the years. Drummers such as Dave Wreckl nowincorporate similar elements into their playing.

    But, I don't think any arranger should ever write a drum part for a drummer because if a drummer can't create his own Interpretation of the chart and he plays everything that's written, he becomes mechanical;

he has no freedom- Buddy Rich

    Conclusion

The aim of this question is to first establish if the people taking the survey areinterested in music. Those who are form part of our target audience and we hopeto reach out to them through our project.

The result reflects that a majority of people (75.0%) are interested in music, whilea relatively low number of people (25.0%) are not. We learn from this result that itis very possible for us to promote interest in our event since our target audienceforms the majority of the general public. Hence, our project is meaningful as it willbe able to impact a large proportion of people positively.

    Conclusion

This is a follow-up question to question 1. After establishing whether if the peoplesurveyed are interested in music, we move the context to Singapore to find out if people are concerned with the musical arts scene here.

The result reflects that a relatively high percentage of people (70.0%) areinterested in Singapores musical arts scene as opposed to a relatively lowpercentage (30.0%) of people who are disinterested. Once again, this resultserves the same purpose as question 1 in determining the size of our targetaudience, only that we have narrowed the scope down to Singapores musicalarts scene. This scope is very important as our project aims to enliven the

musical arts scene of Singapore, and by discovering that a larger proportion of people are interested in the local scene, we proved our projects relevance to thegeneral public.

Analysis:Question 3 serves the purpose of finding out peoples opinions on the state of thecurrent musical arts scene in Singapore.

It is apparent from the overwhelming response by people (92.0% of peoplesurveyed agreed that Singapores musical arts scene was not as active as theydesired) that the current scene is not up to expectations in terms of vibrancy andenergy. This result vindicates our project because our aim is to promoteSingapores musical arts scene. Through our project, we hope that we can play apart in enlivening this scene.

ConclusionThis question allows us to find out peoples attitudes towards efforts aimed atinvigorating the musical arts scene of Singapore.

The result reflects that most people support the idea of promoting the localmusical arts scene. Only a mere 10.0% of people surveyed stated otherwise. This is encouraging to us because our project serves this purpose. By havingsuch a large majority of people who think along the same line as us, it will bemost likely that our event will be successful due to these peoples support.

ConclusionThis question allows us to find out how well-known Buddy Rich is to the generalSingaporean society. This information is vital to our project as we are aiming tointroduce Buddy Rich to the masses, and if most people already know about him,our choice of groundbreaker will not be as meaningful as we prefer.

Fortunately, the result reflects that more people are in the dark about Buddy Richas compared to those who know about him (70.8% to 29.2%). Hence, our projectwill serve a purpose of promoting Buddy Rich to an audience largely ignorantabout him.

    Conclusion

This question gauges how much our audience may already know about BuddyRich. This information is important to us when we plan our exhibition (in terms of what exhibits to put up, what exhibits may be relevant, what people may beinterested in). For example, if many people know about Buddys monumentalPush-Pull technique, this shows that more people are interested in thetechniques pioneered by Rich. We will respond by dedicating a larger part of theexhibition to in-depth showcasing of such techniques.

From the responses presented above, we can establish that the people surveyedgenerally do not know about Buddy Rich. Hence, our event will strive to introduce

in-depth Buddy Rich to our audience.

Introducing the man himself, Buddy Rich:

Buddy Rich is touted by many as the greatest jazz drummer to have ever lived. Be it fast drum chops, impeccable rhythm and timing or great musicality,Buddy Rich has it all. 7.4 Letters and Replies

    7.4.1 To Ms. Cathy Rich

    Letter to Ms. Cathy Rich:

    Dear Ms. Cathy Rich

    78

  • 8/4/2019 A Rich Legacy

    79/104

We are a group of 17 year-old students from Victoria Junior College (VJC),Singapore, who are embarking on a compulsory A-Level examination subject,Project Work (PW). Basically, PW is a subject which, through requiring studentsto plan and organize a series of celebratory events to commemorate a

groundbreaker, aims to inculcate independent learning among students. Our group which consists of 5 VJC students has selected your father, Mr.Bernard Buddy Rich (as he is affectionately known by his fans), as the mainfocus of our PW groundbreaker. Initially when we were tasked with the project,we spent many fruitless days searching for our groundbreaker. Eventually, uponlearning about your father and his profound impacts on the drumming world, weknew that we have found the perfect person.

As this year marks Mr. Richs 20 th death anniversary, part of our reason for choosing to base our project on him is to remember the legendary drummer your

father was. We have conducted a survey among our fellow students as well asthe general public, and gathered that the majority of people in Singapore(inclusive even of drummers) are unknown to your fathers monumentalachievements and contributions to the drumming world. We thus feel that it is ashame, and would like, through our project, to introduce our society to BernardBuddy Rich.

For our project, we intend to hold a drumming competition, targeted at youthdrummers, at the heart of Singapores largest mall, Vivocity. Live bands will alsobe invited to play jazz and rock music (genres that Mr. Rich specialized andexcelled in) during the intervals to provide entertainment. The drummingcompetition will serve as a platform for budding drummers to be talent-spotted asthe winner will earn a full coverage by the leading local newspaper The StraitsTimes in its weekly magazine.

Aside from the competition, an exhibition on Mr. Rich will be held (also at thesame location) to showcase your fathers life and impact on the musical world. We hope that our event will be enlightening to general Singaporean society onyour father. An exciting contribution of Mr. Rich to modern drumming that we wishto highlight is the Push-Pull technique. This technique has greatly influencedthe technique of many drummers in Singapore, but yet, not many drummersknow about its origin.

On a larger scale, besides promoting Mr. Richs life and work to the masses, wealso wish to enliven the musical arts scene of Singapore. It is quite a lamentablefact that in Singapore, arts are generally regarded as secondary. This is veryevident, especially among Singaporean youths. Being students, we are stymiedby a rigorous educational system which starves us of time and space. Pursuit of our musical interests is put on the back-burner and very little emphasis is placedon musical development in Singapore.

    Dear Singapore Drumfest

    Collaboration and Sponsorship

We would like to seek your opinion on the feasibility of collaboration and

sponsorship with you. We are a group of students from Victoria Junior College

doing our A-level Project Work. We are currently working on the topic of

Groundbreakers and are required to plan an event that showcases our

groundbreakers contributions to the music community. However, the event would

not be carried out. Our group has chosen Bernard Buddy Rich as the focus of

our project. Buddy was and still remains to this day, a legendary drummer who

has had profound impacts on modern drumming by pioneering new drumming

techniques. He has also influenced the way many modern drummers play asmany of them often try to emulate his peerless musicality. However, we are

sadden by the fact that few in Singapore know of his great contributions, life and

work as seen from a recently conducted survey.(attached)

Our group proposes to stage a free drumming event entitled A Rich Legacy, to

be held on the 24 th of November at Vivocitys amphitheatre. 24 th November was

chosen at it is during the Singapore school holidays. The aim of this event is to

raise the awareness of people towards Bernard Buddy Rich as we feel that his

contributions to the drumming community are far too great to be forgotten. The

    event comprises of:

    1) An exhibition showcasing the life, contributions, works, and impacts of

    Buddy Rich.

    2) A drumming competition, mainly for young drummers aged 13 to 20, who

    are our target audience.

    3) Live performances by invited guest band, which will play jazz and rock

(genres of music that Buddy Rich played).

Thus, we seek to collaborate with Singapore Drumfest organize this event

together. This event is highly feasible because the current musical arts scene is

Singapore is not as vibrant as we would like to think it is. This is so even after the

building of the Esplanade performance theatre; a theatre that would supposedly

give the music and drumming scene in Singapore a shot in the arm and boost its

vibrancy. It is evident in Singapore that appreciation of music is still considered

somewhat a luxury and not a mainstream activity that everyone in Singapore

should take priority in. The fact that the world of academia takes precedence

over the arts/ music attests to this. Hence, our group is setting out to promote the

appreciation of music by holding our event. We hope that through celebrating

Buddy Rich and drumming in A Rich Legacy, we would stir up greater interest

and awareness among the public towards music and more importantly,

drumming. We hope to use this event to bring the drummers of Singapore

together and to evoke a greater interest in them towards music and drumming. We also hope to motivate young, aspiring drummers using the drum competition

which would serve as a platform for them to learn from other drummers and also

to practice hard and improve on both the technical and musical aspect of

    drumming.

Our exhibitions main target audiences are the school students who know little or

nothing about the music scene and hence, drumming scene in Singapore. It is

evident that many students care very little about Singapores art scene. For

example, not many students are in touch with the local music scene that boasts

of many talented musicians and impressive bands. In addition we hope to scout

for potential drummers that will go on to add flavour to Singapores music scene.

It is a well known fact that Singapore Drumfest, having organized Singapore

Drumfest 07 has been actively participating in the promotion of the music and

    drumming scene in Singapore.

We require your sponsorship and support as

    1) A total of $900 would be given out as cash prizes to the top 3 winners of

    the drum competition.

    2) a total of $2000 is needed to set up our exhibits and shelters and also to

rent equipment such as amplifiers.(we already have access to 3 drum sets

which would be used during the exhibition, performance and drum

    competition respectively)

    3) $500 is needed for logistic purposes (the renting of lorries to shuttle the

equipment we have (3 drum sets) from place to place.

    4) Experience is needed in holding such an event and we firmly believe that

your companys experience would be invaluable in helping us to make this

    event a success.

We pray that you would see the value of our project and sincerely hope to gainyour support and sponsorship. We feel that with your cash sponsorship, we

would be able to make our drum competition and exhibition a success and thus

attract a lot of Singaporeans. We are confident that a Rich Legacy would ignite

the spark of interest within both drummers and the general public alike and will

pave the way for their greater participation in the local drumming and music

    scene.

In a nutshell, we would like to introduce Buddy Rich, the legendary drummer to

Singaporeans who do not know who he is and more importantly, to promote the

drumming scene in Singapore and to inspire and motivate young, aspiring

drummers in hope that they would invest more time and energy into drumming

and ultimately bringing the drumming community of Singapore closer by stirring

up greater interest amongst them towards drumming.

We sincerely hope that you would see the meaning in our project and if you do,

we hope that you would support us in our efforts to promote the drumming scene

    in Singapore.

At the end of the day, A-level Project Work requires students to plan and organize

a series of celebratory events for our groundbreaker, but it will not actually be

carried out. As such, we will only need to know the response of our target

audience and people we require help from towards our project.

We really hope that you will be so kind to consider the points we have put forth

and give us your positive reply as soon as possible.

    Thank you.

    Yours faithfully
