JMJ

January 28, 2018 My Dearest Parish Family,

God be with us always.

Last Sunday, as I was greeting parishioners after Mass, someone held my hands, looked into my eyes and said in what I would describe as a cheerful way; “my surgery is Tuesday, Father – remember you anointed me last Tuesday so please pray for me.” Her words lingered in my mind after I finished exchanging pleasantries after the Mass.

Recalling the tone of her voice as she reminded me of her surgery and to pray for her – I thought with that tone of her voice - one would have assumed that she was telling me she was going on a cruise because it was upbeat and said with joy. Most often people would go into a medical procedure with trepidation and even anxiety. The difference is that she is not going alone but with Jesus and this spelled the difference. She knew that our Lord Jesus had the authority to strengthen, comfort and heal her. God is greater than whatever life may throw her way.

The Gospel reminds us precisely the authority that comes from the Son of God – it is powerful because it emanates from perfect and compassionate love. Yesterday, the CIC chapter that meets in our parish sponsored a seminar about forgiveness. Forgiving releases our hearts from being burdened by the hurts and pains others have inflicted in us. Being forgiven through Reconciliation or Confession allows us to experience the embrace of being truly loved.

Today we have a table in the plaza with our lead ministers for our Hope and Wellness Ministry. They would be happy if you stopped by to find out what this ministry that concerns itself with Mental Health. We all know that we need to b e there for people who are made vulnerable by this affliction. Their families also suffer with them and as a parish family we should be there to support them and provide them with a place where they can be loved and cared for. We just blessed expecting parents in all our Masses let us also remember then in our prayers.

Starting next Saturday, February 3rd our parish will be hosting an active shooter seminar where all Santiago Staff, Liturgical Ministry, Choirs, All Ministries, and Parishioners are encouraged to attend. It is essential that as a community we are all prepared and know how to respond in an event of this situation.

Let us pray that we will never be in a position to tell our Lord Jesus: “What have you to do with us? Jesus of Nazareth?” We should rather have as a refrain: “Please come into our lives, stay in it and walk with us every step of the way.” This way we may experience joy that lingers, that empowers and gives hope. If we have hope then we can manage anything. God bless and take care. Love and prayers,

Fr.

Fr. Thomas Paul K. Naval

Please prayerfully consider the amount of your pledge to the PSA. Together we are united in the

Catholic faith knowing that through your generosity many people will be served. Thank you for your

participation in the life of Santiago de Compostela and the Diocese of Orange.

The early church baptized entire households which included infant baptism. Our RCIA uses this process as a model for the program in today’s communities. It begins by welcoming those interested in Roman Catholicism to

ask questions and participate in discussion. Continuation in the Process may include receiving the sacraments of

Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. For some who have been baptized in another tradition, it may be Confirmation

and/or Eucharist. The celebration takes place at our Easter Vigil Mass.

6PM Wednesday Evening Mass During Lent

What are you doing for Lent this year? In addition to acts of penance and alms-giving, think about

increasing your prayer life and strengthening your spiritual life in your journey towards holiness and

God. We are very blessed to have the opportunity for gathering to celebrate weekly evening Mass during Lent as part of our Easter preparation. Mass will be

celebrated on Wednesdays at 6:00 pm beginning Wednesday, February 21st (the 1st Wednesday after Ash Wednesday) through Wednesday, March 28th. Immediately following each Wednesday evening

Mass, we will gather in the Prayer Chapel to pray Our Lady's Psalter (3 Rosaries), the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and the Wednesday evening prayers from

Liturgy of the Hours. Please join us for Mass and Prayers!

Together we can make a difference for Catholic education!

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, February 14th, 2018. While not a Holy Day of Obligation, all are encouraged to begin the Lent Season by receiving ashes during one of our services. We will have our daily Mass in English at the normal time of 8:00am. We will also have Prayer Services with Distribution of Ashes in English at:

6:30am, 12:00pm(noon),

3:30pm (Family Service), 5:00pm, and

6:30pm Prayer Services in Spanish:

7:45pm and 9:00pm Please note that Ash Wednesday is a day of universal fast and abstinence for all Catholics.

Dispensation and the Lenten Fast The Lenten season calls all faithful Catholics to remember in heart and in mind the redemptive self-sacrifice of Jesus for the life of the world. From the earliest days of our faith, Christians have been called to special penance and sacrifice during not only the 40 days of Lent but especially on the significant days of the Lenten liturgical season, Ash Wednesday, Good Friday as well as all the Friday’s of Lent. In light of this, all Catholics in the United States are encouraged to enter into sacrificial penance during these days and, specifically, to refrain from the eating of meat on all the Fridays of Lent, with the added penance of holy fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. While this discipline of penance and fasting is serious, it no longer binds one under pain of grave sin. For a sufficiently good reason (e.g., a special family celebration, and ethnic festival, Lunar Ne Year, etc.), one may dispense oneself from this serious obligation and may legitimately substitute another day of the week to fulfill this penance. It is for this reason, that there is no need for a specific “dispensation” from the Bishop, lifting the penance for these days.

Returning Blessed Palms for Ashes Unsure of what to do with your blessed palms from Palm Sundays past, knowing that you cannot just throw them away because they are now blessed articles? Do not fret, we will gladly take them and recycle them into ashes for Ash Wednesday. Please bring your blessed palms to our Reception Office and we will take care of everything else. We will be collecting year round.

¡Bodas Comunitarias!

¡levántate, ¡toma tu camilla y vete a tu casa! ¡vete y no peques más! ¡sígueme! ¡no temas!
