OUTCOMES BY THE NUMBERS

The Coconino County Career Center, in partnership with established and emerging premier manufacturing employers, has created the Coconino Collaboration for Advanced Manufacturing Sector Excellence to support the success of manufacturers with a special emphasis on green and sustainable practices. This focus will align with the Governors Sector Strategy Initiative and promote their targeted Northern Arizona strategy on Advanced and BioScience Manufacturing. The development of this grant and the opportunities and services provided through it will help to grow aninfrastructure of interventions to address the identified problem of an under-supported manufacturing workforce.

The Coconino Collaboration will adapt and adopt high tech manufacturing curriculum to provide training for unemployed and incumbent workers in manufacturing jobs with partner employers. Training will include both an academic component and hands-on application of technical skills through creation of a Manufacturing Simulation Lab. The Simulation Lab will be used to train workers and assist parents in understanding the value ofadvanced manufacturing as a potential career path for their families, our future workforce.

Local manufacturers came together to attend fifteen (15) training programs throughout the sector. Combined trainings offered the benefit of pooled resources and valuable networking.

The Innovation Summit brought together local entrepreneurs and policy makers for open dialogue, learning, and discussion - turning today’s ideas into tomorrow’s entrepreneurial breakthroughs. In addition, 200+ students and educators attended from around Northern Arizona for a fun and energetic workshop highlighting entrepreneurship as a career opportunity.

Two manufacturing certificates were offered by the Coconino Community College with the tuition for 36 students being funded by the Coconino Career Center. These courses are stepping stones for many wanting to move into the manufacturing arena giving them skills and technical language to begin a new career.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

STEM education and the importance of manufacturing and bioscience careers was highlighted though the many educational pieces of this grant. From Flagstaff being named the first STEM Community to classroom involvement to Flagstaff community leadership, the grant offered opportunities to grow and develop the many areas of STEM.

MANUFACTURING ROUNDTABLESWith a focus on non-duplication, the Coconino Career Center joined the Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce in their established Manufacturing Roundtables. Workforce issues, growth opportunities, and new developments could be highlighted and discussed through this established working group.

The Career Expo highlighted today’s manufacturing environment and showcased Flagstaff’s manufacturing impact which is seen worldwide. Local companies showcased new technologies, from saving lives with ballistic armor, heart valves and rice crop yield increases, to enriching lives with pet foods, recycled paper products, and the fun of eating an ice cream cone. These manufacturers offered youth, parents, and the community a glimpse into today’s manufacturing.

YOUTH RE-BRANDING If we want to attract today’s youth to manufacturing careers, we need to change their perceptions about what the manufacturing industry is like by showing them what great career opportunities exist in the sector.

“This means reacquainting youth with the process of designing and building products from an early age – and then providing the creative freedom to build

those things on their terms.” Derek Singleton, ERP Analyst for Software Advice The Coconino County Career Center is working to change that perception with a strong focus on strengthening workforce services and a re-branding initiative with a focus on youth. There are exciting careers available through our local manufacturers, but many young people simply haven’t been exposed to manufacturing plants to discover that these environments are clean, innovative, and high tech. They are not aware that promising, well paying manufacturing jobs are available with rewarding career potential.

-- 8 --

The youth re-branding campaign was launched with a new branding banner featuring a ‘Make a Difference’ theme. This theme is the foundation piece for youth looking at careers that will allow them to make a difference from their communities to others across the world. Included in this campaign are three videos that share with youth the opportunities that await them in Advanced Manufacturing!

Twenty youth and 17 businesses partnered to give the students a chance to explore careers available with manufacturers. The Coconino Career Center provided internships that allowed on-the-job learning experiences and an assigned a Career Coach who worked with the youth and training supervisor to ensure they acquired the skills to obtain and keep rewarding careers. To create a sustainable, long-term program, the Coconino Career Center partnered with Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce Skills for Success program, CAVIAT, and Flagstaff School Districts to enhance the in-school presentations given by local employers across diverse sectors.

Creating a youth pipeline with a strong STEM focus has begun to develop as the Coconino Career Center partners with NACET to grow their Core Lab facilities. This opens an opportunity for youth and parents to explore areas of manufacturing that includes bioscience or may even include entrepreneurship in manufacturing as a future employment option.

The Forward Focus Career Expo highlighted 20 local employers and community partners and was attended by over 200 people. Advanced Manufacturers united with youth, parents,

job seekers, and educators to upscale the

manufacturing image and to show how manufacturing can be a pipeline to success. Working together to raise awareness that today’s manufacturing environment is innovative, high tech, and an amazing career opportunity to explore. The new face of manufacturing presents opportunities for creativity, ingenuity, and a chance to make a difference in our community, our country, and throughout the world.
