Some new terms:•What does safeguarding mean?oPromoting the welfare.. oKeeping safe from harm, such as illness, abuse or injury oMaking sure risks of harm to welfare are minimisedoTaking appropriate action to address concerns about welfare

Safeguarding is first about keeping children safe but secondly about protecting ourselves from false allegations.

•What is child protection?oProtecting from mistreatment, abuse and harm.

• A father bathes with his five year old daughter• An 18 year old drives a 12 year old home from youth group and takes a long detour to carry on a conversation they are having•A mother slaps her daughter with a slipper•A 14 year old baby-sits for her 5 year old sister• A 23 year old youth leader starts dating a 14 year old and is on MSN to them as late as 3am some nights•Siblings aged 8 and 10 years return home to an empty house after school each night until their dad comes home•A youth leader has provocative photos of themselves on their Facebook page

Who counts as a child?oAll children and young people under the age of 18 count as a child in terms of safeguarding and need to be kept safe.
