Shores is a Ma amp Pa operationMitch and Mara Loomis moved ldquoupnorthrdquo from the Twin Cities severalyears ago to take over the businessMitchrsquos parents had run for 18 yearsSome regulars were concerned thatthis young couple might be planningto rest on their laurels No one worriesany more Mitch and Mara havenrsquot gotenough spare time to look up ldquolaurelsrdquoin the dictionary From May 1 toOctober 15 their work day runs from7 am to 9 pm seven days a weekBut they donrsquot forget their fair weath-er friends once Shores closes for theseason

Last January over 40 sailors bat-tled icy roads to attend a winterreunion Mara organized to honor twosailors who were turning 50 Gary andRose Spielman missed the birthdaycelebration when the Highway Patrolclosed roads out of East Grand Forksdue to blizzard conditions Despite theweather Ralph and Carol waited atroad blocks in Fargo slipping throughwhen they opened temporarily

Dock mates accustomed to shar-ing raft-ups campfires and pig roastsgathered during a weekend of unsea-sonably cold temperatures Outsidethe lodge lay waist-high whitenessfrozen water and forlorn mastsInside camaraderie and kinshipwarmed summer friends as they win-terized their systems Rural Minnesotasailors are a hearty bunch Maybe ithas something to do with the shortseason Some years they start insnowmobile suits and end in snowmo-bile suits Mitch explains ldquoPeoplewant their boats in as early as possi-ble If therersquos water on the lake thesesailors are on the waterrdquo But therersquos acatch Normal ice-out on the ldquoBigLakerdquo usually occurs around Apriltwenty-sixth The ice in Shoresrsquo har-bor typically melts a week earlier Inthe past the boats have been in the

water but had nowhere to goNineteen ninety-six was a good yearfor ice On May first nearly six inch-es still covered the harbor Divineconnections werent a prerequisite towalking on water With crane-inscheduled for May 4 the determinedgroup ran a small aluminum fishingboat almost continuously trying toclear the bay The boats were cranedin on schedule though Leech Lakeremained 60 ice covered when wall-eye fishing season opened a weeklater

The SoLLYC traditionally hires acrane to arrive the first Saturday inMay and again on Columbus Dayweekend Every non-trailerable boatthat is going in or coming out of thewater goes in or comes out on thosedays Of the forty-eight boats that callShores home thirty-two require thelift

Each couple helps launch severalboats With two sets of straps for thecrane one boat is being prepared asanother is dropped in the water Afterthe crane is sent onits way these nauti-cal neighbors standthe rigs toast theseason and head totown for dinner

Work On Your StartingPosition

The goal of your starting tacticsis simplemdashitrsquos to get yourself

into a good position when the racestarts A lsquogood positionrsquo is onethat allows you to do two mainthings 1) Come off the startingline in the front row with speedand clear air 2) Follow your strat-egy for the first windward leg

Tactically your position at thestart must consider two factors -the location of the fleet as a whole(see discussion of clumps below)and the actions of the boats thatare right near you Both of thesewill impact your ability to posi-tion yourself for a good start Forexample if you start in the middleof a huge pack of boats it may be

difficult to get off the line cleanlyOr if therersquos another boat close onyour lee bow at the start you willsoon get pinched off

One of the keys to positioningat the start is the ability to handleyour boat well in close quartersIn a dinghy you must be able tohold your boat in place for quite along time turn your boat withoutmoving forward and acceleratefrom zero to full speed in as shorta time as possible In big boatsyou need a good sense of time anddistance

Many of these boathandlingskills are things you and yourcrew can practice on your ownFind a buoy for example and see


Avoid lsquoclumpsrsquo - look for holes

Almost every starting line is like a piece of Swiss cheese It has holes where there arenrsquot many boats and clumps where the boatsare packed tightly together There are usually clumps at the ends of the line and almost always at the lsquofavoredrsquo end Sometimes thereare clumps or holes where you least expect them

You donrsquot have to be a cheese connoisseur to realize that the odds of getting off the line in good shape are better if you start in ahole than a clump In a clump itrsquos hard to create space to leeward and find a lane of clear air in holes itrsquos much easier to come off theline with full speed

Because of all this look at your starting line and try to predict where there may be clumps and holes In the starting situation aboveit looks like the committee boat will be much more crowded In the photo therersquos a nice hole in the middle of the line Unless you needto start in a certain spot seek out the holes Watch the pre-start flow and be flexible to change your plan if it looks like yoursquore headedfor a clump

how long you can hold your boatin position right next to it Thensail away from the buoy start acountdown and try to reach thebuoy at full speed when yourwatch hits zero Goodboathandling requires teamworkand a fair bit of practice

As I mentioned beforeknowledge of the racing rules isalso key to the execution of start-ing tactics Tactics by definitioninvolve boat-to-boat maneuversand itrsquos difficult to be confidentabout these if you donrsquot fullyunderstand your rights and obli-gations under the rules

Fortunately the rules are onesailing subject that you can learn


without having to be on the waterall the time Set a goal for thiswinter of learning all the rulesthat apply at the starting lineStudy the rulebook read booksabout the rules (I recommendDave Perryrsquos Understanding theRacing Rules of Sailing Through2008) and find chances to talkwith people who know a lot aboutthe rules

Besides smooth boathandling

skills and a thorough understand-ing of the rules getting yourselfinto a good position at the startrequires the ability to executesome basic tactical moves Hereare a few rules of thumb whenyou are approaching the start

Line up on starboard tack We take this for granted

because almost everyone does itBut there is a very solid tactical

reason here - boats on starboardtack have the right of way Yesthere are times when a port tackstart will work (be sure to look forthose) but most of the time itrsquosbetter to go with the flow by mak-ing your final approach on star-board

Luff on a closehauled course When you are sitting on the

line luffing and going slowlykeep your boat on an angle that isabout 40 degrees or 45 degrees tothe wind This way you can trimin and start accelerating withoutthe need to turn your boat or yourrudder (both of which take timeand slow you down)

Avoid boats close to leeward You should never start a race

with a boat close to leeward (ifyou can possibly avoid it) socarve out a hole on your leeward

side and guard it as youapproach the line The size ofthe hole you need is at least halfa boatlength or so but dependson a number of factors includingwind strength waves line angleand your type of boat

Start with your bow even Unless you know the boats

around you are over the lineearly you should always startthe race with your bow even orahead of theirs The most com-mon error here is not accelerat-ing until itrsquos too late so keep an

eye on the boats nearby and beready to trim in when they do

From a tactical point of viewitrsquos important to anticipate whatmay happen and to be flexibleabout how you respond If yoursquorestuck in a pack with 45 seconds togo for example donrsquot be afraid tobail out and find another hole

Keep your options openWhen yoursquore making a port-tack approach donrsquot let yourself get pinned byother boats If yoursquore not careful another port tacker to windward (C) will pre-vent you from tacking and force you farther down the line than you want Toavoid this slow down or speed up so you maintain the option to tack or jibewhenever you want If you get desperate you can always head up to close-hauled and use rule 19 to hail for room to tack at a starboard-tacker obstruc-tion

Donrsquot set up too close to the lineA common mistake often made byracers who are less experienced isgetting to the line too soon You defi-nitely want to be near the line at thestart but if yoursquore too close beforethe gun the only way you can buildspeed is by sailing on a close orbeam reach This is not goodbecause it uses up your hole to lee-ward and takes you toward boats (toleeward and ahead) that have theright of way Instead hang back farenough from the line so you will haveroom to trim in on a closehauledcourse and accelerate to full speedby the time you reach the startingline

Set up above a lsquomarshmallowrsquoIn terms of positioning the boat onyour leeward side at the start may bethe most important factor of all If thisboat is too close too fast or pointstoo high you will have a very hardtime staying in the front row after thestart So donrsquot leave this variable tochance Pick a slower boat and setup just to windward of them This willgive you a much better chance ofhaving a good start (and race) thanstarting next to your fleet champion

Seven Seas is moving thisNovember from their location inMinneapolis to Shorewood YachtClub in Excelsior MN

Sailing into uncertaintyHammond Yacht Cluband sailing fleet prepareto leave marinaBY BOB MOULESONG

The mood was reflective and alittle melancholy as members of theHammond Yacht Clubs sailing fleetgot together Saturday morning for afinal race before leaving theHammond Marina

The 900 boats currently docked atthe marina must find a new home mdashuntil at least May 2008 mdash to makeway for expansion of the HorseshoeCasino

The race was a chance to saygood-bye not only to each other butto their charter member Pete Duerrwho last month succumbed to ALSalso known as Lou Gehrigs diseaseafter a year-long battle

Pete started the sailing fleet clubin 1991 when the marina started up

said Pat Reynolds the owner of theKarizmaddie and is the current sailfleet captain Pete organized ourWednesday night races our Springdinners and also coordinated raceswith other yacht clubs

The sail fleet club conductedraces each Wednesday during the sea-son at the Hammond Marina Thenumber of boats entered in the raceeach week varied between 15-22Some were smaller 20-foot boatswhile others were as long as 50 feetDetermination and skill not size usu-ally decided the winner

The races provided us an oppor-tunity to get together and competelocally said Maureen Foos owner ofthe boat Cool Heads Prevail

Many of the people you see heretoday have been here for 10-15 yearsshe said These races helped to builda community spirit among us and itssad to be losing that

Although the Hammond PortAuthority has stated the marina willre-open in the Spring of 2008 manymembers of the sail fleet arent sure ifthey will return

Many of the boaters have alreadyleft Some have found new homes inMichigan marinas and a few at theMichigan City Marina Othersincluding most on hand Saturday arestill unsure of their future But on thisbright and breezy Saturday morningseveral members got together to havea final race in honor of the man theyrefer to as the founding father of thesail fleet

The race entry fees as well as allthe money left in the sail fleet cofferswill be donated to the ALSFoundation at the end of the month

Duerrs widow Madalyn joinedFoos crew for the race and Reynoldspresented her with three flags to com-memorate her late husband

Its hard to express how muchour family appreciates this gestureshe said referring to the race as wellas the donation to fight ALS Petewas a humble man and hed blushright now if he could But I thinkinside hed be happy
