The Story of

Martin Luther Kingartin Luther King was born on January 15, 1929 inAtlanta, Georgia. His father, Martin Luther King, Sr.

was the pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church. He had a sister,Christine, and a brother, Daniel.

As he grew up, Martin learned about the "Jim Crow"laws which kept black people from doing many thingstogether with white people. There were separaterestaurants, laundries, and drinking fountains for whitesand blacks. Martin decided that he would work for equalityfor everyone.

He went to Morehouse College, and then to CrozerCollege to become a minister. In 1953 he married CorettaScott. They had four children - Martin, Dexter, Yolanda, andBernice.

Dr. King worked so that the unfair laws separatingpeople could be changed. He taught people to want peaceas he traveled across America and the world. He received aspecial award - The Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 - a medal and$54,000. Dr. King used the money to help others.

Then in 1968 Dr. King was shot and killed. Peopleeverywhere were saddened. Today Dr. King's dream offreedom and equality live on, and he will always beremembered.
