In Shannon Brownlee’s Sacramento Bee newspaper article “It’s Portion Distortion That Makes America Fat” (January 5, 2003), she argues that the fast food industry is almost solely responsible for the ever-growing waistline of the American public. She notes that it is the result of “consumer manipulation” (paragraph 6) and that it is not a “matter of individual responsibility” (paragraph 19), even though she agrees that we are “ultimately responsible” (paragraph 24) for what we eat.
