PRIVATE ISLANDISLA SA FERRADURA IBIZA

Sa Ferradura Island is -in fact- a peninsula connected to Ibiza Island by the small beach of Pas de s’Illa. It is a promontory that protects the Port of San Miguel from the wild north winds. The project consisted in the total refurbish-ing of the existing house and its garden. We were charged of both the architecture project, the interior design, and the landscape concept. The volume and the footprint of the construction was to be strictly respected due to the specific restriction of the area -Coastline, landscape protection, wild-

life preservation. We undertook a severe landscape process to recuperate the original skyline of the island reintroducing the endemic Mediterranean vegetation in the perimeter and eradicating the invasive species of the rockery. The east side is milder with wide meadows opened to the stunning views of the surrounding cliffs while the core of the garden keeps its original subtropical vegetation around the lagoon pool.

Jaime RomanoRomano Arquitectos is an Architecture and Interior design atelier founded in Barce-lona in 1992. The Ibiza office opened in 2002 and is –now- our main office. The team is composed by twelve architects and interior designers under the direction of Jaime Romano. Our main goal is excellency. We try to reach it in an open mind process through an intense dialogue with the client and a deep awareness of the place. We work hand by hand with all the actors of the construction process: builders, carpenters, engineers, landscape designers. We draw and redraw the details until we get a nat-ural balance between all factors –design | flow | ergonomics | cost | weight | timing. We live the construction experience as a multi-disciplinary and collaborative design journey.

The purity of forms -cubic white volumes as a modern interpretation of the ver-nacular architecture of Ibiza-, the range of natural materials and textures -chosen from soft to rough- and the neutral colour palette propose an open dialogue with the wild nature around.

The design of the grey wood porches around the house mitigates the intense light of the summer and creates a privacy filter to the bedrooms without obstructing the views.

The interior is mild and harmonious. Oak floors -with an oyster finish- combine with white clean walls and a brass panelling that is the leitmotiv throughout the house. The main patio -a refer-ence to roman architecture- allows the brise to cool the house along the hot hours of the day and leads to the main terrace on the roof.

Atelier VierkantThe entrance to the house is from the north and more exposed spot on the island. The ar-chitecture here is essential and bare -two white pure volumes-. We wanted to create a strong element that would recuperate the essentials of the house and lead the guest to the main door.

The oversized clay pieces that Atelier Vierkant is able to produce, with their nuanced variation in texture and colour were just perfect! The base greyish tone was melting easily in the landscape with direct references to the grey of the rockery. Atelier Vierkant provided us with their “savoir faire” and their creativity. We were able to build together a teamwork that would resolve the whole challenge in its complexity: Developing the concept together, adapting our ideas to the specific technique of the ceramic, finding the right textures and tonalities, studying together the composition of the wall, resolving the tech-nical issues –exposures to intense 160 km/h winds - organizing the coordination with local teams, arranging the transport logistic to bring the 36 units of 2,30m through the narrow and bumpy dirt road.

A private island for RentThe property offers accommodation for up to 16 guests in a sumptuous Master Suite and 7 additional, luxuriously appointed bedrooms with en-suite facilities, some of them with semi-open bathrooms to underline the beautiful Mediterra-nean setting of the island. The retrieval of cool culminates in the 750 square meters rooftop terrace with 270 degrees of spectacular sea views. It is the heart of Isla sa Ferradura, an important Ibizencan element and the quintes-sential social center. Equipped with 2 bars, shady pergolas, a DJ mixing deck and a stage for private concerts, there is not the slightest doubt that Isla sa Ferradura has discovered the pole position among the world’s most luxurious private islands.A large swimming pool at terrace level as well as a free shaped laguna pool set amidst tropical vegetation, and in future, a gym, wellness and spa facilities will complete the range of ameni-ties of this truly stunning escape.Photography Bart Van Leuven.

THE JANE ANTWERP

Three-star chef Sergio Herman opened his newest restaurant, The Jane, this past spring in a completely restored chapel in the middle of the Groen Kwartier (Green Quarter) and the former military hospital in Antwerp. A team of various artists, designers, and deejays worked together to bring The Jane into being. René Nijboer implemented the interior design drawn up by Piet Boon. The staff wear specially designed clothing. Other eye-catchers are windows printed especially for The Jane, a neon skull and a 800-kg chandelier sporting 150 lights. There are two AUB130 planters, in white with a rough struc-ture and planted with grasses, along both sides of the entrance. The elegant AUSX80 planters were incorporated on the terraces, between the rugged seating designed by Piet Boon.

Sergio Herman (b. 1970) cooked for 25 years in the family res-taurant “Oud Sluis” in Sluis in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Herman had had three Michelin stars since 2005 and was in the Top 50 of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants for eight years. Despite his success, he decided to close the doors of the Oud Sluis in December 2013 so that he could concentrate on new projects. In addition to The Jane in Antwerp, Herman has been running the one-star Michelin restaurant Pure C, in the bathing resort Cadzand, since 2010. He is also joint owner of the culinary publishing house Minestrone. Herman is renown for his delicate preparations, subtle sauces and his tremendous feel for beauty.Photography Bart Van Leuven.

MAGGIES CANCER CARE CENTER

SWANSEA

Peace and serenity combine in the wonderful, swirling structure of Maggie’s Swansea. Built in 2011 and designed and conceived by the world renowned Japanese architect Kisho Kurokowa, the build-ing joins the East with the West, and brings a sense of calm and tranquility to all who visit it. The garden, designed by Kim Wilkie, attracts wildlife, heightening the natural and tranquil feel, and there is also a fully functional allotment. The Centre sits among a small wooded area, and the wings of the design also help to shelter the outside seating areas, meaning that visitors can enjoy sitting out for as much of the year as possible. Along the façade, Kim used a repetition of 3 black anthracite UF100 vases planted with trees.

This autumn, Atelier Vierkant introduces a refined interpretation of its K-Series or river pebbles, adding sharper edges, combined with the soft round shape of a rock. The new stone series come in 3 types: the lower KA, the higher KB and in be-tween the KC.

DESIGN WEEKMILAN

Atelier Vierkant presented during the Milan Design Week in April 2014 Bauhaus inspired juxtapositions of clay forms at the inner court of Duccio Grassi Studio, in the very heart of the Brera Design District. The installation was conceived as a journey from simple clay forms to ceramic furniture, and invited the visitor to confront its ideas with the material and an infinity of textures, finishes, shapes and lines. HOTEL MERCERBARCELONA

Located in the heart of the Gothic Quarter and with just 28 rooms, the Mercer Hotel Barcelona is a unique establishment that has restored a heritage building of historical value to the city. The architectural restoration project was headed up by Rafael Moneo who managed to achieve a balance between the original recovered features and a new construction. The interior design of the bedrooms and the public areas, the work of Gastón & Daniela and the Mercer Hotels team, sought to set off the building’s historical features with the use of refined furniture in a contemporary design and modern materials. The top terrace is designed with a vast selection of Atelier Vierkant planters and furniture. During the day, guests can take advantage of the pool or enjoy an aperitif in the sun. As evening falls, it opens to the public to offer a unique vantage point for enjoying a drink with views over the dome of the Santa María del Mar church and the Basilica of Sant Just y Pastor. CAMPUS SFRPARIS

The new 130,000 square meter SFR headquarters in the Landy-Pleyel boasts nearly 8,500 employee workstations. The building, designed by Jean-Paul Viguier, “adopts the metaphor of the tree, which experiences continual growth and rebirth, adapting constantly to external conditions. The project takes the form of a campus, atop a trunk with protruding branches leading to terraces and large multi-level gardens.” The principle is based on the idea of unity and union, with four main buildings presented both as a unified whole and as discrete spaces, in other words several buildings which must form a visual whole and reflect the corporate culture in detail: strong roots (the trunk) and various business units characterised by their diversity (the branches).

33

34 35

Each element is linked horizontally for journeys promoting contact and communication. The emphasis is placed on building the rela-tionship with the environment: the employees’ workspace environ-ment and the site’s specific environment for genuine contextuality in an industrial landscape; and, with a light, breathing building, the relationship with the gardens that surround the building. Daylight is a key project component fostering pleasant working conditions and optimal energy efficiency, achieved partly by using alternate glass and metal components, with varying openings, reflection levels and densities to suit the space. The facades act like an item of clothing which changes in nature to suit the degree of exposure. Providing protection on the northern side against sound pressure from the main roads, cold and shade, the garment changes to the west

and east with external blinds, glass containing aluminium for extra flexibility, and openings. To the south, facing the gardens, large horizontal overlaps protect against the sun and the partition walls directly adjoin the outer walls. Which is where the stairwells are located, facing the gardens, for permanent visual contact with the redesigned landscape. Shared services are grouped together on the ground floor for a smooth and active relationship with resource-rich common areas: several restaurants, fitness suite, squash courts, relaxation space, etc. For the outdoor spaces, landscape architect Benjamin Doré, opted for large series of Atelier Vierkant UF, MF, BRF and A planters. In different perspectives, the use of these vessels, rhythms the space of the terraces, and creates intimate spaces with still a view to enjoy.

Photography: Bart Van Leuven & SPIK Studio Eric Sempé.

In the Al Bateen quarter, close to the centre of Abu Dhabi, last year a private residence was con-structed from a desert like plot. Architect Deborah Trombetta spent a couple of years, together with her father, living literally on the project site, to realize the ideas and wishes of her client. Result is a contemporary villa, a fascinating water play and a minimalistic interior where objet d’art are spread around the house. Two large UF vessels planted with grasses decorate the front terraces, creating a focus and reference point in the open space, while a series of 3 UK with red interior engobe stand along the garden pavilion, tilted each in another direction. On the top terraces, the architects chose for a the same constellation of UF vases, with an additional series of horizontally striped BRF planters. For the interior, the client opted for round MF-vases with decorative branches. Photography Bart Van Leuven.

THE BUTTERFLY GARDENSAN FRANCISCO

No house in San Francisco’s fabled Russian Hill better reflects the magical promise of California living better than the Butterfly House. Tucked between the historic townhomes and Deco towers that cling to the crooked streets that ascend to the top of the hill, the house’s mannered modernist façade belies the verdant courtyards and spiraling living spaces that lead to a rooftop aerie with panoramic connections the City and the San Francisco Bay. In a city known more for its exuberant, inward-looking painted ladies, this Butterfly House represents the road not taken, offering its occupants inside-outside living.

The courtyard garden offers the residents of the But-terfly House a respite from city life, extending the scale and materiality of the house to the outside. Eschewing popular references to mid-century Cali-fornia homes, the garden design owes much to the Japanese tradition of Tsuboniwa (courtyard garden), the use of a small courtyard spaces to create an idealized view of nature. Rooted in tea garden design, Tsuboniwa emphasizes garden composition, planting selections, and the scale and detail of built garden elements provide its occupants with privacy, tranquility and inspiration through nature. A robust composition of cream-colored limestone paving, poured in place concrete walls, and supersized ceramic planters is balanced with the delicate chartreuse and silver pal-ette of hellebores, maidenhair ferns, euphorbias and succulents.

Invoking the elements, the sunken garden relies on both shadow and wind to define a connection to the outdoors. The abstract geometry of sculptural concrete walls, deep benches around the fireplace and the vertical stripes of cedar fencing invoke the patterns of nature through shadow. These forms are softened by stands of ferns and Japanese Anemones that grow from the base of the fireplace and dance with the afternoon wind. The centerpiece of the courtyard is the great hearth of an outdoor fireplace, fabricated from white concrete. A ripple of water slips across a granite wall located behind the flame of the fire. Adjacent to the courtyard and beneath the spiraling catwalk leading to the upper floors and roof deck, strands of forged metal cranes are bathed in light and water from a suspended mist fountain above.

For this project, Surfacedesign used CV, SY an OV vessels in white/beige finish.

In the living area we created a warm atmos-phere by using a marble stone cladding on the custom-built fireplace. Above the dining table there are three handmade L size Em-brace lamps, produced in southeast Asia of gold colored copper, which gives the room a perfect soft and luxurious atmosphere. In the corner, Osiris used an own designed UO black anthracite vessel, planted with a palm tree.

Hotel Marignan Paris five star is ide-ally located at 12 Rue de Marignan, a quiet street in the 8th Arrondissement, which connects the Champs-Elysees and the Avenue Montaigne, Mecca of Parisian shopping, in the center of the famous “Triangle d’Or of Paris”.As the hotel sits only steps from the Grand Palais as well as from many pres-tigious art galleries, its address has a natural association with both art and cul-ture. The interior architect Pierre Yovano-vitch, icon of New French Style, trans-formed the Hotel Marignan Paris into an island of contemporary luxury, a serene and confidential stop in the heart of the capital. For the entrance, the owners of the hotel have opted for black anthracite AHS and CBH vases, and some smaller ZB seats along the façade.

Recently, landscape designer Daniel Mc Carthy, finished a garden project of a residential property, located in Hampstead, London. Built in traditional red bricks, this villa, managed by O&H properties, has a large back garden where a series of white /beige vessels create accents and repetition in the design : AH130 planted with clipped box wood stand next to a side wall, while rough structured DMB and AUB vases planted with cloud

shaped Ilex trees stand next to the entrance and along the façade. Daniel Mc Carthy has worked at the top of the land-scape and garden design market for over 10 years, designing some of the most prestigious gardens in the UK and around the world. With a reputation for design excellence and a commitment to the highest quality results, Daniel’s style is modern classic. Photography Allan Pollok-Morris.

Photography Bart Van Leuven.

AMAGANSETT GARDEN LONG ISLAND

“I was captivated by this site’s location – between a historic cemetery and the Atlantic Ocean - in Amagansett’s Lanes. Equally inspiring were James D’Auria’s ‘contemporary country’ architecture and the interior’s clean lines, a product of Eric Rymshaw of Fury Design. These elements, combined with the client’s contemporary art collection, result in a family retreat that is a blend of high design, art, and nature.” Eric Groft, FASLA, OvS Principal.

This one-acre coastal getaway is located in Amagansett, New York, on the East End of Long Island. The cedar shake house is situated on the ocean block of the Lanes, a group of quiet streets that lead to the Atlantic Ocean. The front garden is serene and is layered with Astilbe, Actea and Lysmachia, as well as Carex and Ilex among others. The clustered white blooms of the subdued palette guide a guest from the Bernard Venet steel sculpture at the garden’s gate,

to the home’s front door. Exiting the home into the rear garden, a guest steps down limestone stairs into a landscape reminiscent of the nearby dunes that features ornamental grasses and a profusion of seasonal color. The rear garden begins with a gravel courtyard which features a trough water feature. The guest is lead from the water feature, towards a swimming pool and cedar arbor which reflects the home’s architecture.

Beyond the swimming pool, a fire bowl is complimented by salvaged heart pine benches, which are repeated throughout the gardens. Notable plantings throughout the project include native and adaptive species such as Osmanthus, Magnolia ‘Butterflies’ and Corylis, as well as a preserved 100-year-old Beech tree, which remains from when the property was a nursery many years prior. The project was developed with Architect James D’Auria and Interior Designer Fury Design. The collaborative

design resulted in a modern garden with clean lines and tradi-tional, rustic materials. OvS, located in Washington, DC for 40 years, designs world-renowned gardens that meld art, design and environmental sensitivity. OvS’ body of work ranges from urban corridors, monumental civic spaces and public gardens, to estates and urban residences. www.ovsla.com. Phography Marion Brenner.
