THE DRAFT

• Reintroduced in WW 1, the Selective Service Act of 1917 forced all men from the ages of 18-30 to draft.

• Act was redone as the Selective Training and Service Act (STSA) of 1940

• Pres. Roosevelt’s signing began the 1st peacetime draft in the US

• No more than 900,000 men to be in training at one time

• Men ages 18 – 45 liable for military service

• Required men 18 – 65 to register

THE DRAFT (CONTINUED)

• Limited service to 18 months

• Between 1940 and 1947 over 10 million men were inducted

• 1947 the Act was expired by Congress

• Replaced by a new act in 1948

• 1948 act said that all males 18-26 had to register

• Men from 19-26 liable for induction for 21 months service followed by 5 years of reserve duty

WORLD WAR 2: PACIFIC BATTLES

One of the most important pacific battle was the Battle of Midway. In the battle of Midway:

•Japanese lost four aircraft carries and their best pilots

•We only lost one carrier

•First major American naval victory of WW2

Some say that the Battle of Britain turned the war because if they had lost the n the war would have been over considering that Hitler would’ve controled all of Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.

The Battle of Coral Sea was a clash between carrier task forces:

•May 7-8, 1942

•Not one shot was traded

•Heaviest losses were the U.S. carrier Lexington and the Japanese carrier Shoho

•Japan withdrew

U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1933 – 1945)

Helped America out of The Great Depression

At first followed a vast political opinion to remain neutral

Began to ally with Britain and Russia before actually entering the war

Pearl Harbor entered war

Knew before Pearl Harbor that they would eventually have to enter the war

Death in April 1945, briskly followed by the end of the war
