  • It is my pleasure to welcome all our new students to Taylor’s University. Embarking on a new chapter in your life in a completely new environment can be filled with anxious moments; therefore, I would like to assure each of you that we at Student Experience are committed to guiding and supporting you through this transition into university life. And to our returning students, I bid a warm welcome back to the start of another unforgettable academic year.

The year could not have started on a more exciting note than having the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Mohd. Najib Tun Abdul Razak, visiting our award-winning Taylor’s Lakeside Campus for the first time. It was a proud moment for all Taylorians to have him officiate the launching of the 1 Malaysia for Youth (iM4U) Reach Out Convention & Concert hosted by our University. The Prime Minister even took the time to meet and greet our eager students who welcomed him to the campus.

The first quarter of the year proved to be an ideal period for our international partners to visit us as part of their student exchange, study visit and internship programmes. The Global Mobility Office welcomed students and staff from diverse countries such as South Korea, Japan, Australia, Germany, Switzerland and Taiwan. It was a memorable time for these students and staff, who were touched by the hospitality and warmth of our staff and student leaders who contributed to making their trips an enriching one.

At this University, one of our core values is about respecting and caring for one another. We felt that it was necessary for all new students to be equipped with the knowledge and tips on how to protect themselves and to be safe at all times. It is for this reason that for the first time ever, we had made it compulsory for the new students to attend the Safety Workshop that has been built into their Orientation Programme.

With many students also being away from campus for their semester break and the festive holidays, we had taken the opportunity to send our staff for development and training programmes as well as organising intensive leadership development programmes for our student leaders. Through these development programmes, our staff and student leaders will be able to use their new skills and knowledge to become more effective in carrying out their respective roles and responsibilities.

As the year progresses, there will be many more such awesome activities that will be catered to all students. There is something for everyone, thus, I urge all students to take advantage of the opportunities presented to you here at Taylor’s University by getting involved in these activities. Learning not only happens in the classroom, but also outside of it. It is often that such activities will define your university experience.

Have a great and successful year ahead, everyone!

Sincerely,Angela Pok Vice President, Student Experience Taylor’s University

No where is a safe place. As part of the key programme for University Orientation, all the new students are required to attend a personalised Safety Workshop aimed to empower students to protect themselves and be less of a victim. Students were able to gain hand-ons and practical tips on personal safety and self-defense. As of April, about 2,875 students participated in the workshop and have benefited from the session. Conducted in an interactive and engaging manner, students learned plenty from the real life examples, videos and practical steps in preventing crime. Safety Workshop has become one of the favourite workshops for our new students.

“Never had I imagined that I would ever have a chance to travel abroad

in order to undergo internship as a partial fulfillment of my degree course. I was attached to PT Dover Chemical,

Indonesia which lasted for twelve weeks, bringing me a whole new perspective of life. This company was a good choice for my internship due

to its closeness to chemical engineering field, and I learnt and improved on a myriad of functional and interpersonal skills including new knowledge, hands-on experience and especially communication abilities due to language and cultural differences. My utmost appreciation is to the Taylor’s Career Services Centre for

their endless efforts in securing an industrial placement for me to gain first-hand experience in a real working environment.”

“I want to express my utmost gratitude and sincere thanks to Taylor’s University and

the Career Services Centre for providing me with the opportunity to undergo a wonderful internship experience in my home country, Indonesia

with PT BASF Indonesia, a German-based chemical company and one of the biggest in the world. I had not only gained a lot of new knowledge and skills which I

had not been exposed to yet in my studies but also had the chance apply the theories learnt from university in real life work situations. The tasks, projects, and activities I was

given during the training were very enriching for me and cannot be replaced by textbooks. My internship has certainly prepared me and given me the confidence to face the real

working environment when I graduate as a young professional engineer.”

“I went for internship overseas in Kazakhstan with the Kazakh

National Agrarian University where I was placed in the International Relations office of the university. Working in

a culture that is different from my own gave me the confidence to find ways to communicate with people and it motivated me to learn

about their differences. I want to thank Career Services Centre for allowing me to undergo my internship in Kazakhstan as it was certainly an experience of a lifetime. I have definitely gained in ways that I could not have had I chose to do my internship locally.”

“I was given a priceless experience to intern at Nestlé

Product Sdn Bhd at Mutiara Damansara. The highlight of my internship was the valuable

opportunity of undergoing and living the life of a Supply Chain intern with a leading multinational corporation

such as Nestlé. This opportunity was scarce to come by considering I am not from a Supply Chain background.

Nevertheless, Nestlé trusted me and for that I cannot be more thankful. Comprehending the whole end-to-end process was challenging given the complexity of Nestlé’s Supply Chain, but was made easier with a patient and understanding reporting manager and friendly colleagues. My advice to fellow junior students is to try not to go into an internship expecting to be taught; but instead be prepared to be proactive and seize opportunities. I have also learned that learning happens anywhere and anytime; especially

in situations which we least expected. So be alert and have lots of fun discovering! Special thanks to Career

Services Centre for this awesome experience!”

“My internship experience with Sheraton Tianjin Hotel in China was nothing

short of amazing and eye-opening. I had learnt so much about the roles and duties of a person involved in the travel and tourism segment of the hotel and hospitality industry. Fortunately for me, during this internship, I also had the opportunity to meet and welcome VVIPs from various countries who were in Tianjin for the World Economic Forum as well as assisting in various events such as The German Food Festival and participating in Starwood’s Global Sales Blitz. I have certainly benefitted personally and professionally from this experience, and I am grateful to Career Services Centre for the support they had provided throughout my internship experience. To my juniors, take a bold step and challenge yourself to gain overseas experience through internship with Career Services! You will not regret it!”

“We had the experience of a lifetime, doing our internship

in France with the Casino Theatre Barriere of Toulouse. Nothing was more memorable to us

than the opportunity to work with the president of Meilleurs ouvriers de France, MOF Chef for pastry, Philippe

Urraca. Chef Philippe was invited by Casino to cook for a promotional dinner event. We were so lucky to be able to learn pastry first hand from him. He did his signature dish Paris-Brest au Chocolat and Orange Soufflé from scratch and we were able to assist him from the start of the dish to plating the dessert before serving. We also got to work with Michelin starred chefs from the North of France and travelled to Bordeaux to witness our sous chef. Furthermore, Chef Ho Weng Kit who represented Taylor’s University in France, won the first place in the 2013 Championnat de France de sculptures sur glace, catégorie senior (Champion of France, ice sculpting, senior category). To be able to witness the mastery and skills of renowned chefs from around the world at this event was truly another best moment of our internship experience in France. To our juniors, do brush up on your French and seize this opportunity provided by Taylor’s Career Services Centre to go out of your comfort zone and have a life-changing French experience for your internship! Thank you to the staff of Taylor’s Career Services for their dedication and support in making this opportunity available to us.”

  • Taylor’s University welcomes Hansung University at the start of the 4-week English Language Course

To know Malaysia … is to master the Malay traditional dance moves!

    13

    Global Mobility

“Ahn Neyong Ha Seyo” were the first words of greeting uttered by the 30 students of Hansung University but they most certainly knew how to say hello in both English and Malay by the time they were due to return (albeit reluctantly) to Korea. Spending 4 weeks of their winter vacation at Taylor’s, the students had the opportunity to enhance their English language skills, experience a night’s stay at Malaysian village, visit the landmark attractions in and around the city as well as foster close relations with Taylor’s students.

One of the participants, Beom-Joo Jeong had this to say, “Malaysia will always hold unforgettable memories for us.”

    A German-MalaysianCultural Exchange!

When 23 students from the Cologne Business School in Germany showed up at the Lakeside Campus with their 2 professors for a day, they were bound. Taylor’s students presented on the challenges and opportunities in the Malaysian tourism industry while the visiting students delivered a presentation on the German tourism market. After a formal Memorandum of Agreement signing ceremony, the delegates were taken to Thyme & Tarragon for lunch where they were then treated to a dance sequence performed by Taylor’s tourism students. The best part of all came when the visiting students had the chance to learn a Malay traditional dance, much to the hilarity of their professors!

When 20 students from the University of South Australia arrived at Taylor’s Lakeside Campus to embark on a 2-week study trip, they certainly got more than they bargained for. Most of the students had never been abroad before; thus the study trip was truly an eye-opening experience for them. In addition to the lectures that they attended, the students also had a chance to visit a Big 4 accounting firm, render community service and visit the main sights in Kuala Lumpur, even donning religious garb when visiting a mosque. One of the most interesting talks was on “Inter-cultural Management” delivered by Mr Swadheen Sharma, Sales Director of Kraft Foods Malaysia, and arranged by Career Services Centre. He shared his experiences of having lived in several countries and having to manage staff hailing from diverse racial, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, some of which drew laughter from the students. The heart-breaking moment came when it was time to bid farewell to the Taylor’s students at the Farewell Dinner and a second time at the airport.

An Educational Experiencefor students from Meiji University, Japan

On 8th March, our Japanese friends from Meiji University came to visit us. There were 12 students and 1 accompanying Professor, Dr Yoshihiro Oishi, Professor of Global Marketing, participated in this visit. The main purpose of their visit is to learn and understand the culture of Malaysia. This visit was a very memorable and educational experience as they managed to have a glimpse of the different cultures and races in Malaysia. In addition to that, they were even taught how to dance the ‘Zapin’ traditional dance. Three students from Meiji University were given the opportunity to give a very brief and interesting presentation on Japanese culture to those participated in this visit, including our Global Ambassador. It was indeed an enriching learning experience for all participants.

When Japanese students, Yuki Yasui and Haruko Ogawa first arrived in Malaysia to commence their 2-week internship with the Student Experience Dept. at Taylor’s University, they really didn’t know what to expect. From day one, they took a strong liking for Malaysian food, with nasi lemak and roti canai ranking as amongst some of their favourite foods. Throughout their internship, they had the opportunity to get to know Malaysian students and staff, through working in the Inaugural Conference jointly held by Taylor’s University and Universiti Malaya. Like what many international guests have echoed before, Yuki was amazed to see how people of such diverse races are able to live and work together in harmony, epitomized by the working culture and ethos in the Student Experience Dept. Haruko said that “I’ve learnt so much while I was here. I’ll never forget what I’ve heard and seen during my time in Malaysia.”

The Student Affairs Division of University of Malaya and Taylor’s University, with support from the Ministry of Higher Education and Asia Pacific Student Services Association (APSSA), successfully organized an Inaugural Conference on Student Affairs Governance covering Issues, Challenges and Opportunities from 25th to 28th February 2013. The 2-day conference was held at One World Hotel where 101 delegates from local and international institutions attended. The sessions include Managing Social Media, Managing Integration & Security Issues, Student Employability, to name a few and 2 plenary sessions covering Entrepreneurship and Volunteerism.

Delegates were also treated to a welcoming dinner hosted at Tarragon Restaurant, Taylor’s University on the 25th February

2013. Dressed in traditional costume, delegates were welcomed in a Malaysian traditional way with Kompang and Bunga Manga. During cocktail, guests were entertained by local band playing Malaysian instruments. To add to the traditional atmosphere, guests had an opportunity to participate in the traditional dance led by student performers from University of Malaya. Other entertainment includes instrumental music performed by Taylor’s University Symphony Orchestra.

The conference concluded with visits to both host universities, University of Malaya and Taylor’s University, by the international and local delegates, on the 28th February 2013.

“Don’t believe the Hong Kong movies. Hong Kong is very safe!” President of Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE), Professor Gordon Cheung quipped in his Welcome Speech at the Opening Ceremony of the 8th APAIE Conference & Exhibition 2013, to peals of laughter at his good humour.

With its excellent public transport system, world-class exhibition centre and charming city landscape, Hong Kong was poised to be the perfect setting for the APAIE Conference & Exhibition 2013. Centred around the theme “An Ascendant Asia-Pacific: International Higher Education in the 21st Century”, the event held from 11-14 March 2013 attracted 1300 delegates from over 40 countries around the world committed to internationalizing education.

The entire event hosted by the Chinese University of Hong Kong was extremely well-executed from beginning to the end. Delegates could select from numerous parallel sessions organized around topics on student mobility and support services, internationalization strategies, partnerships and collaborations.

All chairs and presenters were distinguished professionals in their chosen fields.

Pre-conference workshops were organized for the sole benefit of exhibitors, aimed at professional development of international educators attending the event. The partners involved in holding these pre-conference workshops include the British Council Education Intelligence, i-graduate, CHE Consult, the College Board and ISEP.

Taylor’s University was the only Malaysian university that registered as an exhibitor at this prestigious event. Having a dedicated booth provided the perfect opportunity to touch base with existing partners as well as explore collaborations with new ones. During this time, 34 new higher education institutions were identified as potential new partners for student exchange programmes.

Note: The next APAIE Conference & Exhibition will be held in Seoul, Korea in 2014 where 11 Korean universities will serve as local hosts.

In anticipation of the next APSSA international conference in 2014 in Kyoto, the Asia Pacific Student Services Association (APSSA) and the Institute of Student Affairs (ISA) organised a Study Visit trip to Kyoto, Japan in January 2013. Prior to the study visit, the EXCO of APSSA had their mid-conference meeting on 15 January, followed by a “Truly Kyoto” cultural dinner hosted by the Vice-Chancellor of Doshisha University. On 16 January, a group of students from Ehime University and Doshisha University organised a city tour for the EXCO of APSSA, followed by a campus tour to Ritsumeikan University. On the same day, 20 international delegates from Indonesia, Malaysia, Macau and Philippines arrived in Kyoto to join the Study Visits put together by Doshisha University. Along with the EXCO of APSSA and the Japanese delegates, all 35 participants underwent a series of workshop presentations and case studies during the 3-day visit, including campus tour to Doshisha University and Kyoto University. The delegates were also given a welcome and farewell parties organised by the staff and students of Doshisha, that served as a platform for networking and cultural exchange. The visit was indeed an eye-opener to many delegates, having gained insights into the culture and education system in Japan.
