1 The 5 th Sunday after Epiphany - - February 9, 2020 A Special Message to First-Time Visitors We are delighted to have you with us today! Here are a few things you might want to know as you prepare for worship. We love to see children at worship and welcome them in the sanctuary. There are activity bags available in the hallway for them should they become restless. We also have a nursery located in the wing opposite the sanctuary staffed by two capable, loving young women. The restrooms are located just outside the hallway leading to the sanctuary, with a wheelchair/handicap accessible restroom down the hall. If you need help finding any of these, please ask an usher. They also have a “Welcome” packet for you with more information about Living Word Lutheran Church (also available on the visitor’s table). At the beginning of the service, the ushers distribute red pads for all in attendance to complete. Please complete the form so we can provide more personal ministry. Prayer request cards are included for you to fill out and place in the plate when offering is taken. Pastor Eric will then, with your permission, share the concern and pray for your need during the prayer time. We celebrate Holy Communion every Sunday, and all who believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior are invited to commune with us. We welcome the opportunity to visit with you, so please join us for coffee immediately following the service. Your presence today is a blessing. May our collective worship be acceptable and pleasing to God, our Father.

A Special Message to First-Time Visitors

We are delighted to have you with us today! Here are a

few things you might want to know as you prepare for

worship.

We welcome the opportunity to visit with you, so please

join us for coffee immediately following the service.

Your presence today is a blessing. May our collective

PASTOR’S CORNERIt has been fun to hear from a number of you about last week’s sermon – not

being anxious about our tomorrows. As I have reflected on that message some

more, a prayer came bubbling to the surface. I didn’t know those words before

but realized that I had been praying the spirit of those words (if that makes

sense). The words that came bubbling up are as follows: Sovereign God, You

were faithful yesterday as You took my tomorrow. Receive my today all for Your

glory. Take my tomorrow that I may rest in Your peace this day. In Jesus name

I pray, Amen. I give that to you as you face the rest of your day and think about the future. We don’t know what the futures holds, but praise be to God that we

know who holds our future. To God be the glory! Amen.

Nursery Information

Young children are welcome in

the nursery located in the wing

opposite of the sanctuary. It is

staffed by Olivia and Dillana

P: Beloved in the LORD, let us draw near with faithful hearts and confess our sins to God our Father, asking Him, in the

name of our LORD Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

P: Our help is in the name of the LORD. C: Who made heaven and earth.

P: I said, I will confess my sins unto the LORD. C: May God forgive the offense of my sin.

P: (facing altar which symbolizes God’s presence): Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, C: we confess to You that

we are by nature sinners and that we have sinned against You by thought, word and deed, by what we have done

and by what we have left undone. Therefore, we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, pleading for and seeking

Your grace for the sake of our LORD Jesus Christ.

(Silence for personal reflection and self-examination.)

P: Most merciful God… C: You have given Your only begotten Son to die for us. Have mercy upon us, and for Jesus’

sake grant us forgiveness of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You and of Your will,

and true obedience to Your Word, that by Your grace we may come to eternal life; through Jesus Christ our LORD. Amen.

P: (facing the congregation declares God’s grace): Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us, and has

given His only Son to die for us, and for Jesus’ sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe on Jesus’ Name, He

gives power to become children of God and bestows on them His Holy Spirit. Those who believe and are baptized

shall be saved. Grant this, O LORD, unto us all. C: Amen. All: Praise the LORD!

P: The grace of our LORD Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you.

Glory to God

Congregation: (Refrain) Glory to God in the highest, Sing! Glory to God! Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on Earth!

Verse 1: Lord, God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father; We worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory! C: (Refrain)

Verse 2: Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us;

You are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer! C: (Refrain)

Verse 3: Women: For You alone are the Holy One, Men: You alone are the Lord, the Most High, Jesus Christ,

All: with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father! C: (Refrain) Reprinted under Onelicense.net #A-717731

P (spoken): The LORD be with you. C: (spoken): And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY (All pray): Sovereign God, You possess all things as You and You alone reign on high. May we not seek to become rich according to the world’s standards, but may we give thanks that You possess us in Jesus Christ our Savior, and thus we have all that we need. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

We Hear and Read God’s Word

This reading is from Paul’s 1st Letter to the Corinthians, the 2nd chapter (ESV) And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come

proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. 2 For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 And I was with

Page 5: A Special Message to First-Time Visitors · 2020-02-02 · 1 The 5th Sunday after Epiphany - - February 9, 2020 A Special Message to First-Time Visitors We are delighted to have you

5

you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, 4 and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

6 Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. 7 But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. 8 None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 But, as it is written,

“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”—

10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11 For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.

(Here ends this reading.)

This reading is from the Book of Psalms, Psalm 112 (ESV) (to be read responsively)

Reader: Praise the LORD! Blessed is the man who fears the LORD,

Congregation: who greatly delights in his commandments!

R: 2 His offspring will be mighty in the land; C: the generation of the upright will be blessed.

R: 3 Wealth and riches are in his house, C: and his righteousness endures forever.

R: 4 Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; C: he is gracious, merciful, and righteous.

R: 5 It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; C: who conducts his affairs with justice.

R: 6 For the righteous will never be moved; C: he will be remembered forever.

R: 7 He is not afraid of bad news; C: his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD.

R: 8 His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, C: until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.

R: 9 He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor; C: his righteousness endures forever; his horn is exalted in honor.

R: 10 The wicked man sees it and is angry; C: he gnashes his teeth and melts away; the desire of the wicked will perish!

Hymn of the Day “Be Thou My Vision” WOV# 776

The preaching text is the Letter of James, the 5th chapter. (ESV) C: Glory to You, O LORD

1Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. 2 Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and

silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days. 4 Behold, the wages of the

laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. 5 You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of

slaughter. 6 You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you.

(The Words of Our LORD)

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

We Worship by Confessing Our Faith in the Words of the Nicene Creed

WE BELIEVE in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

WE BELIEVE in one LORD, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through Him all things were

made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit He became incarnate from the Virgin Mary and was made human. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and His kingdom will have no end.

WE BELIEVE in the Holy Spirit, the LORD, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe

in one Holy Christian and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen

Sermon Pastor Eric Hullstrom

We Worship In Thanksgiving By Offering Our Gifts

Offertory “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior” (arr. H.S. Livingston, Jr.)

The offering is received As the congregation stands, the ushers bring the offering forward.

“With Grateful Joy” With grateful joy for you the source of all life

We raise one voice to you from whom all blessings flow. You are the Giver of Life; you are the Lover of life,

the Good Sustainer of Life. We live in you. We live in you.

We pray together the offering prayer: P: Merciful Father... C: we offer with joy and thanksgiving what You have first given us – ourselves, our time, and our possessions, signs of

Your gracious love. Receive them for the sake of Him who gave Himself for us, Jesus Christ our LORD. Amen

The Prayers of the church (Each petition concludes with “LORD, in your mercy”, to which the congregation responds: “hear our prayer”)

We Worship by Receiving Our LORD in His Holy Meal

The Great Thanksgiving (Spoken) P: The LORD be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the LORD. P: Let us give thanks to the LORD our God. C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P: It is indeed right and salutary . . . (Here the minister continues with the preface:)

C: Holy, holy, holy LORD, God of pow'r and might: Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna. Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD. Hosanna in the highest.

The Words of Institution and The LORD’S Prayer (congregation sings)

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

(For those with gluten allergies, we now have gluten-free wafers available for Communion.)

The congregation sings: “Lamb of God”

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; grant us peace, grant us peace.

Communion Hymns:

“Have Thine Own Way”

Holy Communion: Lutherans believe the LORD’s Supper is a holy sacrament in which Christ comes to us with His grace, love, compassion, and forgiveness. The crucified and risen Christ is present in, with, and under the bread and wine – He promises: “This is my body... This is my blood”. Therefore, the Apostle Paul says we should examine ourselves lest we eat or drink in an

unworthy manner (1 Cor. 11:27ff.). Martin Luther wrote, “Anyone who does not believe these words (‘this is My body given for you this is My blood shed for you.’), is neither prepared nor worthy; for the words, ‘FOR YOU’ requires simply a believing heart.”

Therefore, all (including children who have received instruction) who believe in Jesus Christ as Savior and LORD and who see His presence in the sacrament are welcome to commune with us.

A Child's View of Thunderstorms A little girl walked to and from school daily. Though the weather that morning was questionable, and clouds were forming,

she made her daily trek to school. As the afternoon progressed, the winds whipped up, along with lightning. The mother of the little girl felt concerned that her daughter would be frightened as she walked home from school. She also feared the electrical storm might harm her child. Full of concern, the mother got into her car and quickly drove along the route to her child's school. As she did, she saw her little girl walking along. At each flash of lightning, the child would stop, look up, and smile. More lightning followed quickly and with each, the little girl would look at the streak of light and smile. When the mother drew up beside the child, she lowered the window and called, 'What are you doing?' The child answered, 'I am trying to look pretty because God keeps taking my picture.' May God Bless You Today and every day as you face the storms that come your way !!

Noah’s Ark

I am not afraid of tomorrow for I have seen yesterday, and I love today!

Noah's Ark : Everything I need to know, I learned from Noah's Ark.

ONE: Don't miss the boat.

TWO: Remember that we are all in the same boat!

THREE: Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark.

FOUR: Stay fit. When you're 65+ years old, someone may ask you to do something really big.

FIVE: Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.

SIX: Build your future on high ground.

SEVEN: For safety's sake, travel in pairs.

EIGHT: Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.

NINE: When you're stressed, float awhile.

TEN: Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.

ELEVEN: No matter the storm, there's always a rainbow waiting.

Fellowship Equipment Needed: The generosity of this congregation during the transition to a new location has been such

a blessing! We now have another opportunity for members to make a special and long-lasting gift. Lenten soup suppers will

be happening every Tuesday in March. In order to accommodate those fellowship events, we need tables and chairs. If you

would like to help the church acquire these furnishings, please put your donation in the pink envelope and write “church
