Charity Quilts

June is upon us and this is my last newsletter article for the year. For Charity Quilts it has been an astounding year. The total number of quilts donated (as of 5/25) is 457! At this time last year the total was 343. I counted the number of our Chapter members from our roster and found we have 123 members. That is over 3 ½ quilts per member. Your willingness to give is overwhelming. Everyone has been very generous with their time but many thanks needs to go to the Fall Retreat committee members for creating preemie quilt kits for every re-treater to make a charity quilt. I received 63 quilts from the retreat and continue to receive quilts made from the kits. I need to give thanks to our small group of knitters. Between them they have donated over 1500 hats. Re-markable!!

Thank you to everyone who has given me a quilt, donated fabric, long armed a donated top, sewed binding, attended the Charity Sew-In, or helped me schlepp everything to my car. Your time, gen-erosity, creativeness, and friendship have made being the chair of this committee a true pleasure. Now I just have to figure out what our quilt goal will be for next year!!!

Kind thoughts and get well wishes to Burke QU member:

Erica Robinson

Sympathy card to:

Bonita Griffin If you know of a Burke QU member who is in need of a card, please let our Sunshine Chair, Susan Novack, know.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this won-

derful program to honor those who have been wounded

in service to our Country. The quilted love you have

shown these heroes astounds me. This year I have col-

lected 33 Quilts of Valor. I received more than 175

Veteran’s Day Star blocks and I continue to receive

them at every meeting. So many of those blocks have

been incorporated into finished quilts. I was unable to

coordinate with the new liaison at Fort Belvoir in May,

but I am looking forward to my presentation in June.

Bless you all as you continue to quilt for the comfort

and care of those who have sacrificed so much for us.

Burke QU business Meeting Minutes, May 9, 2018

Burke United Methodist Church

President Barb Hall called the meeting to order at 7:30pm

There were no new members or guests.

Old Business

April minutes - Jean Taylor moved and Denise Racz seconded a motion to approve the April minutes as published in

the last newsletter. A vote was taken and the minutes were approved unanimously.

Barb attended the Big QU board mtg last week and reported the following:

The QU Show will remain an annual show.

For the first time since 1994, the quilt insurance will be increased. It will still only be covered based on

size so anyone who had a quilt appraised for more than the insurance amounts, should make arrange-

ments to attach it to their home owner’s insurance, purchase additional insurance or find an alternative

insurance.

Seventy-four (74) vendors have registered and paid for booths.

Demos begin at 11am on Friday & Sat. There are no demos on Sunday.

Sunday 1-2:30pm Jelly Roll race– Barb Hall donated a jelly roll to the Burke team (Marilyn Owendorf,

Karen Sappington & Betsy Stone) which they will use to practice. Please come support your Burke

Team on Sunday.

Please go on QU website, click Quilt Show and sign up to help. Burke is responsible for Exit Survey, so

please sign up for that.

There is no discount for volunteers.

You must be signed up for set up. You will not be admitted if you have not signed up and are on the

volunteer list. Volunteers must purchase their ticket before entry. There will be a separate window,

with entrance to the left of the ticket booth.

A Janome sewing machine will be given away on Sunday courtesy of The Quilters Studio, member

Kathye Gillette. Stop at the outreach booth to get your ticket. You must be present at the 3pm draw-

ing on Sunday to win. The winner must claim the Janome between 3:15 and 3:30 or another entry will

be drawn.

Boutique & merchandise will be closing 30 minutes before the 4:00 close on Sunday so the team can

close down.

There will be an electronic survey of opinions so please participate.

Past Big QU presidents get free, unlimited entry for life.

The QU Annual Meeting at the Dulles Expo Center is Saturday, June 2 at 5:30pm. Jenny Beyer is the

speaker.

September 27 is the Big QU Fall Meeting. Karen Combs is the speaker and, on September 28 she will hold a work-

shop – Patchwork Illusions. This conflicts with our Fall Retreat which is Thursday September 27 through Sunday

September 30.

We have business cards for our Burke chapter.

Each chapter can survive with only a President and Treasurer. You can pay/hire someone.

Fundraising – can have only 3 per year. Some chapter requests a $50 donation from each member in lieu of fund-

raisers. Some chapters only do the boutique. Think about ways to help fund Burke to allow for quality speakers

and less expensive social events.

Burke paid for a half page ad in the QU Quilt Show program.
