This paper is to make a brief survey of English dictionaries from１８００through１９００. Compared to

the１８th century, which was sometimes called the age of cultural revolution, the century we will deal with

here could be the so-called flowering age of the revolution. It is not my purpose to prove the age by sim-

ply counting the number of the dictionaries published throughout this century. Neither is it to cataloging

them. It is, rather, to enjoy the resultant cornucopia of the flowering age by seeing the streams of dic-

tionary publication in the１９th century.

はじめに

この小冊子においては，１９世紀に刊行された英語関連の辞書のほとんど（すべてとは言いが

たい）を概観して，この世紀の様相を見ようとするものである。カージー，ベイレイ，シェリ

ダン，ジョンソン，ウォーカーで花咲く１８世紀の果実がウェブスター，リチャードソン，ウー

スターなどの手によって，まさに枝もたわわに実をつけたのが１９世紀であると言えよう。ここ

では，その実を木の枝ごとに分類し，それぞれの枝ぶりが根から梢にかけてどのよう広がりを

見せているのかを検証しようとするものである。

まず，全体を PartⅠと PartⅡに分ける。PartⅠでは，いわゆる特殊な分野を対象とした辞

典類の出版状況を眺める。方言関係，語源関係，俗語関係，類義語関係，百科辞典関係，発音

関係，初期英語関係，古語・廃語・なまり関係，アメリカニズム関係など（配列順序には特別

な意味はない）である。一方，PartⅡでは，上記以外のいわば一般的な辞書（いわゆる普通辞

書，語源・派生・発音・語義等をすべて網羅する辞書）を大辞典，中辞典，さらに小辞典に分

類しその出版状況を眺める。なお，この分野では，１９世紀の場合，どうしてもジョンソンの流

れとウェブスターの溢れでるような出版状況を語らずにはいられない。一般辞典分類の最後に，

教育的配慮か販売目的か学校用辞書類が多く刊行されているので，その状況にも触れたい。

ここで言及すべきは，１９世紀における「ほとんどの辞書類」について述べるとはいっても，

文字通りすべてではないことである。上に列挙した分野以外は，ここでは調査の対象外とする。

対象外の主な分野は次のとおり（順不同）。

１１８世紀初版で，１９世紀に出版されたその改訂（増補）版。ただし，ジョンソン，ウォーカー

などの著名な初版に関する継続版はそのつど言及。

２比較言語学，文法（統語論），音声学，音韻論，英語史研究，アングロ・サクソン語研究，

文学・文学作品関係の研究書・辞書類，古英語テキスト・手引書類

３医学，建築，経済，農業，数学，歴史，修辞学，美術，音楽，哲学，化学，陸・海軍，等

の専門分野を扱う辞書類（百科辞典は別）

４地名，人名，伝記，引用句，ことわざ，故事成句，寓話等に関する辞書類

５動植物，鉱物等に関する辞書類

６教会および聖書関係の書名，人名，地名，件名，物語等の辞書類

７スコットランド，アイルランド，ウエールズ語およびそれらと英語に関する辞書類

８オーストラリア，カナダ等英米以外の英語圏で刊行された辞書類

９スペリング・ブック，つづり字の手引き，テキスト類

結局，この小冊子で扱う辞書類は原則として「初版」を対象とし，それ以降の版は初版の状

況が明らかでないものに限定する。再版もの，復刻版については言及しない。

ここで取り扱ったような分類ごとの年次別配列・説明では，どうしても当該辞書の編者名，

辞書名，発行年での索引は困難となる。要するに，ここでは分野ごとの出版状況を明らかにす

ることを目的とする。

４その他の方言辞書類１４編はここでは詳述をさける。

Ⅱ 語源関係辞書２０編

辞書のタイトルに Etymologicalとしたものが多いが，この全てが語源辞書というわけではな

い。Pronouncingと題してもそれが必ずしも発音辞典ではないのと同じである。１９世紀には語

源関係の辞書はで２０点ほど出版されているが，当然のことながらその大部分は１８５０年代以降に

集中する。ウェブスターが１８２８年の辞書（初版）を，語源をうたい文句として出版したが，後

世の批評家に酷評されたのは，著者の偏見というよりは１９世紀前半の科学的比較言語学の成果

を十分に生かし得ない時間的制約の所為であると見るべきであろう。しかしながら，その１９世

紀前半においても，Jamiesonのスコットランド語辞典，さらに語源をギリシャ語，ラテン語，

フランス語に求める Grimshawなどの辞書が出版されているが，ウェブスター同様，科学的な

意味での「語源」研究ではなく，語源に興味をもたせるこの時代としては珍しいものの一部で

あろう。冒頭に述べたように，etymologicalという名称を用いたがる当時の心理を表すものの

現れであろう。以下，語源関係については６編を概観する。特に（３）（４）などには注目する

必要あり。

内容は語の意味用法や英語との相違などを説明したものとみるのがよい。しかし，「序」にお

いてスコットランド語の起源について詳細に述べている。この版の縮約版は１８１８年に，また改

定版は１８４０―４１年に全２巻で出版された。さらに１８７９―１８８２年には新版として全４巻ものが出さ

れた．さらに，Dr. Jamieson’s Scottish dictionaryの名称で１８４１年に全４巻が出版され，その縮約

版が１８４６，１８７７年に，その supplementが１８２５年に刊行されるほどに人気のある辞書であった。

も言及されていない。このタイトルページは第２版のもの。初版の詳細は不明。

１８６２年に Bostonの Bould and Lincolnから出版されたが，第１巻のみで，Aから Dまで。大き

いる。語源特殊辞典。

pp.,１４８００語）第４版（最終版）は１９１０年に出版されている。１８８２年にはコンサイス版（A con-

cise etymological dictionary of the English language. By the Rev. Walter W. Skeat. ... Oxford: Claren-

don Press. xii＋６１６ pp.,１９cm.）が出版され，タイトルの頭には Clarendon Press Seriesとある。

O’Neilはこのコンサイス版に１８９０年阪，１８９４年版，１８９７年版（いずれもページ数，大きさは xii

＋６３３pp.,１９cm）の記録があるとしている。また，これには Harper & Brothers版あり。１８８２年

（xii＋６１６pp.,２０cm），１９００年（xii＋６３３pp.,２０cm.）の出版記録。

Ⅲ 俗語関係辞書７編

１８・１９世紀には顕著な俗語辞典が多く出版されたが，中でも重要なのは Francis Groseと John

Farmer & W. E. Henleyである。Jonathon Green（Dictionary-makers and the dictionaries they made）

によれば，この両者とも１７世紀の終わりごろにスラングの蒐集家である B. E. 紳士（Gent）な

る人物が出版した『ジプシー，乞食，泥棒，ペテン師その他の集団で用いられる古今の隠語新

辞典』（A new dictionary of the terms ancient and modern of the canting crew, in its several tribes, of

gypsies, beggars, thieves, cheats. &c... London for Hawes, P. Gilbourne, and W. Davis,１６９９？）に負

う所が非常に大であるという。Francis Groseの俗語辞典（A classical dictionary of the vulgar

tongue.）は１８世紀（１７８５年）の出版になるが，その内容を引き継いだ第３版，第５版で様子を

みることができる。これ以外に１８００年代の著名な俗語辞典といえば，John Camden Hottenがあ

げられよう。以下著名なもの幾つかを紹介する。

この改訂増補版は Grose’s classical dictionary of the vulgar tongue の名称で１８２３年に Londonの

Sherwood, Neely, and Jones社から出版されている。１９世紀の著名な俗語辞典の一つ。

W. E. Henleyが携わる。Senjoからのリプリント版あり。

Ⅳ 類義語関係辞書２０編

類義語辞典（Synonymous dictionaries）は１９世紀に Synonymiconsとか Synonymiesとか，ある

いは Synonymizingとかさまざまな言われ方があったが，英語の場合１８世紀の半ばから類義語

辞書がスタートする。１８世紀になって徐々に語彙数が増大し，今まで存在していた語に近似の

意味の語が現れるようになった。そのような語が数千におよぶようになって類義語辞書の必要

性が生じたもののようである。もっとも１８世紀以前にも類義語関係の研究がなかったわけでは

なく，ルネサンンス期のギリシャ語，ラテン語関係のもの，さらに１８世紀にはいっても仏語，

独語との類義語研究はあった。

１８世紀の半ば過ぎには John Truslerの The difference between words esteemed synonymous（１７６６）

が出版され，つづいて Hester Lynch Piozziの British synonymy（１７９４）がだされた。１９世紀の前

半には Perry（１８０５），Taylor（１８１３），Crabb（１８１６），Graham（１８４６），Wately（１８５１），Roget（１８５２）

などの類義語辞書が相次いで出版されるが，後半になると，トレンチ司祭の「わが国の英語辞

書の欠陥について」（On some deficiencies in our English dictionaries,１８５７）における指摘（第５項：

「類義語の識別に不注意であった」）がきっかけとなって，おそらくWorcester（１８６０），Whitney

（１８９１），Funk & Wagnall（１８９６）などの顕著な結果が生まれると同時に，Fallows（１８８３―８６），Faulk-

ner（１８８４），Smith（１８８４），Fernald（１８９６）などもその成果を発表し得たと思われる。さらに２０

世紀への足がかりとして挙げられるものにはMarch & March（１９０２）や C. O. Sylvester Mawson

（１９１１），F. Sturges Allen（１９２７），C. O. Sylvester Mawson（１９３１），Webster’s New International（１９３４）

などがあろう。ここでは類義語を専門とした辞書の内で，他の文献にあまり述べられていない

もののいくつかを紹介する。

� 1813 Taylor, William. English synonyms discriminated... By W. Taylor... London: Printed forW. Pople. xx＋［２１］―２９４＋［１８］pp.,１９cm. 語義間の意味区分を明らかにしたもの。語源が類義

語の意味区分および用法を知る上で重要であるという信念のもとに編集される。１８５０年から７６

年にかけて版を重ねる。

� 1816 Crabb, George. English synonyms explained, in alphabetical order; with copious illustra-tions and examples drawn from the best writers. By George Crabb... London: Printed for Baldwin, Cra-

dock, and Joy; and T. Boosey.［２］＋７７２pp.,２４cm. 類義語を２０００の分類にして類義語間の意味の

違いを説明する。語源や語義をも引用豊富に説明する。Rogetの Thesaurusに大きな影響を与

えたといわれる。以後１８１８，１８１９（American edition），１８２４，１８２６，１８２９，１８３０，１８３１，１８３５，

１８４６，１８５０，１８７７，１８７９，１８８６，１８８９，１８９７，１８９８の各年にさまざまな版が出版され，そして

１９１６年には出版１００周年記念改訂版が出されたほどである。

� 1845 Graham, George Frederick. English synonyms classified and explained; with practical ex-ercises designed for schools and private tuitions. ... By G. F. Graham... New York: D. Appleton and

Company. xiv＋［２］＋３４４pp.,２０cm. 使って面白いテキストの一つとされる。初版を１８４６とする

ものもある。これはアメリカ版の初版ではないかと思われる。この辞書の特色は，学習用であ

ることと，類義語の記述が２語一対で説明し（Custom/Habit, Force/Strength, Diligence/Industry,

Freedom/Liberty, Beast/Brute，など），それらをすべて５分類したことにある（General and specific,

Active and passive, Intensity, Positive and negative, Miscellaneous）。

� 1851 Whately, Elizabeth Jane. A selection of English synonyms. タイトルページ，大きさ，出版社は不明。Crabbの English synonyms explained にとって替わるほどの人気辞書。しばしば

Richard Whatelyの English synonyms discriminated の名で知られているが，初版の著者ではない。

� 1871 Soule, Richard. A dictionary of English synonyms and synonymous or parallel expressionsdesigned as a practical guide to aptness and variety of phraseology. Boston: Little Brown, and Com-

pany. ［２］＋vi＋４５６ pp.,２０cm. アルファベット順の類義語リスト。意味の相違には触れない。

１９７３，１８７９，１８８２，１８９１（G. H. Howisonによる改訂新版），１８９９さらに１９３４年の第３版などが

の（The Imperial cyclopaedia），４巻もの（The Imperial dictionary），５巻もの（The Imperial enclo-

paedia by W. M. Johnson），６巻もの（The Imperial reference library, The British encylopedia, The

Oxford encyclopaedia, The Century dictionary），７巻もの（The encyclopaedic dictionary by R.

Hunter），８巻もの（Chambers’ encyclopaedia, The new cabinet cyclopaedia），１２巻もの（Pantolo-

gia, The national cyclopaedia），１３巻もの（Encyclopaedia Americana），１４巻もの（The popular en-

cyclopedia），１８巻もの（The Edinburgh encyclopaedia），４０卷もの（Alden’s manifold cyclopedia），４６

卷もの（The cyclopaedia）など極めて多数にのぼる。改訂版等を数えあげると枚挙に暇が無い。

ここではその主なものを取り上げて紹介する。

このタイトルは改訂版（１８８４）のもの。その後の改訂版は New Yorkの Collier社から全８巻で

Ⅵ 発音辞典関係４１編

１８，１９世紀をとおして発音の権威とされた幾人かの発音家（Elocutionist）による正しい発音

に人々は興味を示した。発音を辞書で扱うことに進歩がみられたのは Thomas Sheridan（A gen-

eral dictionary of the English language,１７８０）以降であると言われる。その代表的な例は，強勢

だけでなく，実際の発音を示そうとした James Buchanan（Linguae Britannicae,１７５７）や，語義

なしの発音の手引書を作ったWilliam Johnston（Pronouncing and spelling dictionary,１７６４），また，

数字を用いて音価を示そうとしたWilliam Kenrick（A new dictionary of the English language,

１７７３），さらに，全ての用例引用，語源説明を省いて新しい発音の手引きをつけた John Walker

（Critical pronouncing dictionary and expositor of the English language,１７９２）などに見られる。

１９世紀になると，Walkerを踏襲する例が多く，全くの新しい試みは多く見られないが，発

音を主体としたと思われる辞書が７編ほどある。時代を反映してか，アメリカ発音に注意した

多くの一般辞書も見られるが，特に「アメリカ」と銘をうった発音辞書は４編ほど，更に，発

音とつづりを特に強調したと思われるものが６編ばかり，また，人々の関心を買わんがための

「発音」辞典とおぼしきものが１２編，さらにまた，Pronouncingと explanatoryあるいは Pronounc-

ingと expositorを組み合わせた小辞典が１５編ほどある。

ここでは発音主体の辞書をいくつか，そのタイトルページで見るとともに，それ以外は著者

名と出版年とタイトルの頭を並べてみたい。

発音主体の辞書

Ⅹ 一般辞書（大辞典）１８編

１９世紀の大辞典はまさに花咲く世紀の象徴であって，JohnsonやWalkerの改訂諸版，Richard-

son, Websterとその後続版および改訂，簡約諸版，Boag, Craig, Ogilvie, Wright, Worcester, Murrey,

Whitney, Funkなど今日までその名が知られている諸辞書類がめじろ押しである。特に，この世

紀のほぼ全般にわたって，何がしかの辞書が毎年出版され続けたといっても過言ではない。

ここでは，大辞典の定義を①複数の巻になるもの，②単刊でも１０００ページを超え，かつ大版

（四つ折版，quarto，約３０cm）であるとし，各種の辞典案内，研究書，紹介文，概説などにお

いてすでに言及されている著名なものを除き，そのタイトルページを紹介したい。

１９世紀における中規模の辞書類はウェブスター，ジョンソン系のものを除いて凡そ５２編ほど

出版されている。多くの中辞典は大なり小なりウェブスター，ジョンソンおよびウオーカーに

XIII 学校用辞書

ここでは，一般辞書から「学校用」を区別して特別なジャンルを設定することを目的として

いるわけではない。特別の意味はないが，それでも，小辞典分野の中に埋没させるより，辞書

編纂者の学校教育への情熱の一部でも知ることが可能ではないかと考えたからである。しかし，

それとは別に販売促進を狙っての School dictionaryも大いにあり得ることであろう。以下，「学

校用」と名のついた辞書を眺めてみよう。
