A Survey of Undergraduate International Student Scholarships Offered by U.S. Colleges Spring 2019
Prepared by Joanna G. Kondylis
1
About this document This document presents a survey of 70 colleges and universities across the United States of America that offer need- and/or merit-based scholarships to undergraduate international students. The list of institutions included is not comprehensive; it is meant to represent a diverse list of large, small, private and public institutions that can serve as a starting point for students as they explore scholarship opportunities. Listed in alphabetical order, each entry includes basic profile information about the institution, information related to acceptance rates and standardized testing requirements, and information of available grants and scholarships. The scholarship information is subject to change, and students are highly encouraged to review or request additional information from institutions of interest. Students are also encouraged to request information on SAT Subject Test requirements for institutions, since these requirements can vary by major or by school. This document was inspired by the author’s interviews with high school students who live in Mandra Attikis, Greece, who expressed their wish to find a way to study abroad in the United States. The interviews were conducted as part of the author’s grade 9/10 school project to assess Greek students’ college and career aspirations in the context of their country’s economic recession. Copyright statement: All scholarship information was obtained directly from the institution websites; all of the images included are under the “free to use or share” license

Need-based Caltech has need-sensitive admission for international citizens. The total amount of financial aid funds is limited for international students, and the Institute remains committed to meeting 100% of the demonstrated need of all admitted students. This limitation may result in financial need being a factor in the admission decisions. Please note that: (a) An international citizen who plans to apply for financial aid at any time during their undergraduate career must apply for it at the time that they apply for admission. (b) An international citizen who applies for aid and is offered financial assistance for the first year will be eligible to reapply for financial aid in subsequent years. (b) An international citizen who applies as a freshman applicant through the Early Action plan should not expect financial aid. If you are an international citizen who plans to apply for financial aid, you must apply through Regular Decision.
Merit-based Caltech does not offer merit-based scholarships

Need-based CMC is committed to meeting 100% of demonstrated need of all admitted first-year students, regardless of citizenship. However, as a "need aware" institution, CMC takes into account a student's ability to pay the full-cost of attendance as a part of admission criteria for applicants that are not U.S. citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents. Any student that needs financial assistance to cover the full-cost of attendance must indicate that they are applying for need-based financial aid on their admission application and follow the financial aid application procedures for international students. Students who do not apply for or do not receive financial aid upon admission are not eligible to be considered for financial aid in future years while enrolled at CMC.
Merit-based Merit-based scholarships are available for first-year applicants including the Interdisciplinary Science Scholarship; the McKenna Scholarship; the Seaver Scholarship. A blend of need-based and merit awards can be seen here.

Need-based Emory University offers need-based financial aid awards to a small, select group of international students. International students who apply for need-based financial aid will be reviewed as a separate cohort. In the admission process, the university is “need-aware” for international students. This means that when reviewing international applications, Emory University takes into account whether an applicant has requested financial assistance. As a result of this need-aware approach, Emory’s admission rate for international applicants requesting need-based financial aid is notably lower than the rate of acceptance for those not requesting aid.
Merit-based International applicants are encouraged to apply for merit-based scholarships (including the Emory opportunity award; Liberal arts scholarships) through the Emory University Scholar Programs. As part of these programs, the university offers partial/full merit-based scholarships.

Need-based If you apply for financial aid and you are offered admission, you will receive a grant-based financial award that meets your full demonstrated need. In the admissions process, the university is “need-sensitive” for international candidates. This means that when reviewing international applications, UChicago takes into account whether an applicant has requested financial assistance. The vast majority of financial aid is given out in the form of need-based aid.
Merit-based Merit scholarships are partial-tuition scholarships that may be a single lump-sum award, or a renewable annual award. Merit scholarships are considered independently of an applicant’s financial situation, so if you think you may require financial assistance, you must submit an application for need-based financial aid. All first-year applicants are automatically considered for merit scholarships; no additional application is required.

Presidential International Scholarships: These are merit-based scholarships ranging up to $25,000 per year. Need-based Based upon a review of academic qualifications, financial need, and availability of student aid resources, an applicant may be considered for financial assistance. This assistance may include a self-help component, consisting of a student loan and student employment, along with University scholarship assistance. The financial aid and admissions decisions are done together, typically in March.
Merit-based Notre Dame offers merit scholarships to a limited number of international students who demonstrate exceptional accomplishment, leadership, commitment to service, and intellectual promise. Notre Dame’s limited number of merit-based scholarship opportunities for international students are highly competitive. Ranging from $5,000 per year to the full cost of attendance, these scholarships are typically renewable for four years and recipients may be invited to participate in leadership development and enrichment opportunities as an additional benefit of their award. Selections for all merit-based scholarships are made as part of the admission process and no separate application is required for consideration.

It guarantees to meet 100% of all admitted first-year students' demonstrated financial need for all four years, regardless of citizenship. To be considered for financial aid, international applicants must indicate their intention to apply for financial aid at the time of their admission application. International students who were admitted with no request for Columbia financial aid may not subsequently change their status to apply for aid, even if their family financial circumstances change. Awards range from $13,000 to $62,000 per academic year. While the College asks students to contribute a minimum of $7,500 per year towards their education, applicants who can contribute $30,000 or more per year will be most competitive for admission. A large percentage of the financial aid is awarded in the two early decision rounds.

Need-based Each year, over 1000 international students apply for admission and financial assistance, and 35-45 are admitted with funding. For those foreign citizens with financial need who enrolled in the class of 2022, the average scholarship was approximately $51,247, plus a Vassar student loan of $3,500, and eligibility for a campus job earning $2,400, for a total average financial aid award of $57,335. Of course, each individual student’s financial aid package will depend on his/her family’s financial circumstances. Vassar meets 100% of the candidate’s demonstrated financial need for all four years. Students who are neither US citizens nor permanent residents who wish to be considered for financial aid at any time during their four years at Vassar should apply at the same time that they apply for admission. Since Vassar is not need-blind in the admission of non-US citizens, financial need may be a factor in the evaluation process for admission. Therefore, those admitted without financial aid subsequently would not be eligible to receive Vassar funding during their years at the college, except under the most extreme circumstances.
Merit-based Vassar College does not give scholarships based on achievement in a particular arena (such as sports or music or even academics).

Need-based Kenyon offers significant need-based financial aid to international students applying as first year students. If admitted, Kenyon meets 100% of a candidate’s demonstrated financial need for all four years. Since Kenyon is not need-blind in the admission of non-U.S. citizens, financial need may be a factor in the evaluation process for admission.
Merit-based Merit-based awards are given to the most exceptional international students and include the Kenyon Full and Half Tuition Scholarships; the Kenyon Honor, Science, and the Distinguished Academic Scholarships; the Kenyon Promise Scholarships, and more. You do not need to complete any additional paperwork to be considered for merit-based aid. International students can also be considered for talent scholarships in music, art and writing. You must apply separately for the talent scholarships. Kenyon is not permitted to offer any athletic scholarships to any students, domestic or international, by the guidelines of the NCAA Division III.

Need-based Bryn Mawr College awards need-based financial aid to international students which may consist of grants, loans, and campus employment. The College meets the full demonstrated need for all admitted students and there is a great deal of competition for these funds. Bryn Mawr College is “need sensitive.” This means that the amount of aid a student requests of the College may affect the admission decision. An international student must declare her intent to apply for financial aid on the Common Application at the time she applies for admission.
Merit-based When you submit your application, you will automatically be considered for merit scholarships. These scholarships range from $12,000-$30,000 per year and are awarded for a maximum of eight semesters.

Bucknell is currently not "need-blind" for international students. A family's financial contribution toward a student's educational costs at Bucknell is therefore part of the admissions decisions, along with other factors such as academic achievements, standardized test scores, inclinations for leadership and service, unique perspectives and character qualities, and more.
Merit-based A few merit scholarships are awarded each year as well, and all applicants are considered for such awards. There is no separate application process to receive an academic merit award. Need-based International students can apply for need based financial aid, though the process is highly competitive and funds are limited. Need based financial aid awards are composed of grants (money that do not have to be paid back to the college), institutional loans, and work study. Packages vary greatly from student to student. Financial aid goes towards the cost of tuition, room, and board at Gettysburg.
Merit-based Merit based scholarships are awarded to international students based on their grades in their high school courses and their standardized test scores. Merit scholarships for international students are the same as those for our domestic applicants. There are four levels, and range from $10,000/yr to $26,000K/yr. Lafayette meets the full demonstrated financial need of international students through a combination of loan, job, and grant aid. The awarding of aid is extremely competitive. Students selected for admission and funding have completed the most rigorous secondary school curriculum available. They have secured excellent marks/grades, have (or will have) graduated among the top of their classes, and have excelled on their examinations. Applications from international students are read on an accelerated schedule so admissions decisions can be mailed promptly. Need-based If you’re an international student whose family requires financial support to afford Penn, we’re here to help. Each year, Penn commits millions of dollars in undergraduate aid funds to support international students. International applicants who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States, Canada, or Mexico, who anticipate the need for financial aid at any point during their four-year course of study at Penn, must apply for aid when they apply for admission. For admitted students, Penn meets demonstrated need for eight semesters or four years through a grant-based aid package as long as they continue to demonstrate financial need, making it possible to graduate without debt. Students must reapply for financial aid each academic year.
Merit-based Penn does not award scholarships based on academic or athletic merit.

Although a student applying for aid may be academically admissible, not all students will be awarded financial aid due to the limited availability of funding. In addition, all students receiving funds are expected to contribute personally toward educational and personal expenses while attending Villanova University.
Merit-based International freshmen students are eligible to compete for and be considered for merit-based scholarships such as the Presidential Scholarship (valued at tuition, general fee, room, board and books for eight consecutive semesters), and the Saint Augustine Scholarship (partial tuition) along with US citizens and permanent residents. Due to the high number of eligible applicants, not all students who meet the minimum criteria are offered scholarships.
