For more than 25 years, UNT jazz students benefited from the impeccable performance skills, extensive recording experience and dependable good cheer of performer, educator and lead trumpet Jay Saunders. From 2014 to 2016, Saunders served as director of the UNT One O'Clock Lab Band. Prior, he directed the UNT Two O'Clock Lab Band, a position he assumed in 2008. Saunders joined the UNT jazz faculty in 1999 as conductor of the Jazz Repertory Ensemble. T h e next year, he was tapped to lead the UNT Three O'Clock Lab Band, a position he held until 2008. He also taught applied jazz trumpet and Introduction to Jazz Recordings. Saunders is a veteran of the Stan Kenton Orchestra, with which he made four tours, recorded 1 1 albums and taught untold numbers of clinics. Saunders' discography also includes one album each with Doc Severinsen and Ornette Coleman and a host of recording projects with rock, Latino and religious artists. Saunders enjoyed first-call status 40 years in the vibrant Dallas recording industry. He may be heard on themes of CNN, CNN Headline News, HBO, HBO Asia, The Golf Channel, ESPN radio, Warner Bros., British Broadcasting Corp., Voice of America, Paramount Television and network radio and TV stations across the U.S. In addition, Saunders spent 35 years as lead trumpet in headliner settings at Dallas Summer Musicals and pops series of Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra; in the mid-1970s, he also filled the lead trumpet chair in the Jerry Gray Orchestra in the famed Venetian Room in the Fairmont Dallas. In these venues he backed a parade of platinum names, including Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Billy Eckstine, Sarah Vaughan, Frank Sinatra, Bernadette Peters, Patti Austin and Natalie Cole. While pursuing a bachelor of music degree at UNT from 1965 to 1968, Saunders played trumpet in the UNT One O’Clock Lab Band, served as an undergraduate teaching assistant in trumpet and played his first two tours with Kenton. Upon graduation, Saunders enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned the lead trumpet position in the Studio Band (now Jazz Ambassadors) of the U.S. Army Field Band in Washington, D.C. Upon discharge from the Army, Saunders rejoined to the Kenton orchestra as lead trumpet. In 1972, he returned to UNT, where he conducted lab bands under Leon Breeden and taught applied trumpet under John Haynie while pursuing a master of music education degree. He then juggled touring/teaching with Kenton with pursuit of a performing career in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. In 2018, Saunders and his wife Pat Saunders will celebrate their golden anniversary. Their son, Kent Saunders, works in commercial real estate development. Other family members include Hurley, a golden retriever; Biscuit, a Siamese mix; and KC, a tabby.
