ANGUILLA, British West Indies — I am inshellfish heaven. A super-size platter ofCaribbean lobster and Anguillian crayfishsits before me, grilled and spiced to per-fection with a secret sauce.

I think I’ll pass.Sandra, a Georgia native, met and mar-
ried her Anguillian husband while bothwere living in Atlanta.
“After our son was born, we came tovisit Eudoxie’s family,” she said. “We de-cided to stay when we learned that islandofficials had chosen to go with high-endrather than mass tourism, which ensuredthat the island would not have neon signs,billboards, time shares, casinos, massivecruise ships or fast-food restaurants. Itseemed like a good place to raise a family.”
In 1985, they purchased a 2-acre stripof sand, and Scilly Cay (pronounced “sillykey”) opened the following year, completewith a spot for helicopter arrivals from St.Maarten.
It has developed over the years into alobster lover’s lunch spot for regular folksand celebrities. Sandra Bullock rented outScilly Cay for a birthday party, as did Rob-ert De Niro a few years back, for 40friends, including Robin Williams. Usher,Billy Crystal, Liam Neeson and celebritycouple Sarah Jessica Parker and MatthewBroderick have all chowed down on lob-ster and crayfish here, not to mention

LA JOLLA, Calif. — Just beyond thebreakers at La Jolla Shores Beach, hun-dreds of dark figures cruise through thesandy shallows like a scene in a horrormovie.
In most cases, the sight of one shark,much less hundreds, would spark panic.
The leopard sharks of La Jolla induce adifferent response.
Instead of racing toward shore, visitorshere head out toward the deeper water toget a closer look.
And for those who get the chance toswim with the sharks, the experience isunforgettable.
“I’ve been doing it for years and I stillgo out and swim with them,” said EzekielMorphis of HBK Sports, which offers kay-aking and snorkeling tours with thesharks. “I think it’s awesome.”
The leopard sharks come close to shorefrom June to early December, peaking be-tween August and September, when hun-dreds congregate along a small stretch of
this beach north of San Diego.The sharks are mostly pregnant fe-
males, and juveniles are rarely seen. Sci-entists say they believe that they gatherhere to help with the gestation process.
Because of a submarine canyon justoffshore, the waves at La Jolla Shores tend
to be smaller, which keeps the colder wa-ter of the deep from mixing with thewarmer water of the shallows. With thesmall waves and warm water, it becomes aperfect place for the cold-blooded leopardsharks to hang out before giving birth

When Robin and Sue Ricketts arrived inAnguilla in 1978, there were two small ho-tels and one restaurant.
The British-born couple’s experiencein the hotel industry around the world hadbrought them to the Caribbean to takecharge of hotel start-ups first in Aruba,then in Martinique and Bonaire. Whilevisiting friends on St. Maarten, an after-noon boat outing brought them to theneighboring island of Anguilla.
“All we could see were beaches, one af-ter the other,” Robin said. “We thought,‘My god, this is just heaven!’ ”
After meeting with government andtourism officials about their desire tostart hotel projects, the Rickettses decid-ed to settle on this beach-rimmed isle, atleast long enough to give it a go.
“We had the expertise, but not themoney,” Sue Ricketts said. “We securedland rights to a prime 20-acre beachfrontsite overlooking Meads Bay and TurtleCove, but needed to find the finances toproceed with building what would be-come the Malliouhana, Anguilla’s firstluxury resort.”
Within months, Leon Roydon, an in-vestor vacationing on St. Martin (theFrench side of St. Maarten), came lookingfor land to develop. “Lo and behold, wesealed the deal,” she said.
Two luxury villas opened in 1981. Themain 55-room hotel opened in November1984.
“Giorgio Armani was our first guest inthe villas,” Sue said. “There were no creditcards, no 800 numbers and no comput-ers; reservations came in by Telex.” Othercelebrities and well-heeled guests alsofound their way there, none more sur-prising than former President RichardNixon, who swam ashore one day from hisyacht, along with his Secret Service com-panions.
“We invited him in for a drink and dis-cussed events in China with him — in thebathroom no less!”
Once the standard-bearer among An-guilla’s luxury resorts, the hotel closed in2011, an apparent casualty of the world-wide economic downturn. It is expectedto reopen this year under new ownership.
The Rickettses left the Malliouhanashortly after its full opening in 1984 tohelp create and manage Cap Juluca, an-
other of the island’s best-known hotels.Three six-bedroom villas opened in
1988, while construction continued allaround them.
“Those days were much like what isportrayed in Herman Wouk’s Don’t Stopthe Carnival,” Sue Ricketts said. “We hadtelephones, but no electricity. Generatorspowered everything.”
Within three years, the Rickettses,known throughout the Caribbean fortheir expertise as hoteliers, were luredaway from Anguilla for the first time in 13years.
“We left in 1991 to help start up GraceBay Club in the Turks and Caicos, thenspent about a year in England before re-turning to our home in Anguilla.”
In 1997, they were asked to return toCap Juluca, which by then had grown toan 18-villa, 98-room property. Sue over-saw worldwide sales and marketing whileRobin sat on the management board. Be-fore the couple left again in 2007 to han-dle luxury villa rentals, the resort wasnamed No. 1 in the Caribbean by readersof Condé Nast Traveler.
It wasn’t long, however, before theywere back at hotel work. They took onownership and management of the up-graded and revitalized 27-room AnacaonaBoutique Hotel in 2010, an affordable al-ternative to Anguilla’s luxury resorts.
“Anguilla has become our home, in ev-ery sense of the word,” Sue said. “It’s ourworld, and one in which we’re very happyto have spent the majority of our lives.”

To get there, make yourway to the Island Harbordock just off the northcoast, park near the ScillyCay sign and wave yourarms. (You’ll feel silly, nopun intended, but itworks!) A boat will soonarrive for the three-minuteride to the island, which isdecorated with thatchedtiki huts and walls embed-ded with hundreds ofconch shells. Except forspecial events, Scilly Cay isopen for lunch on Wednes-days and Sundays only, soplan accordingly.
Arrive hungryAlthough not quite thewell-kept secret it was 20years ago, Anguilla(rhymes with vanilla) re-mains a low-key destina-tion compared with otherCaribbean vacation spots.In 2012, Anguilla’s stay-over arrivals numberednear 65,000; an equalnumber were day-trippersarriving by ferry. Contrastthose numbers with thoseof its nearest neighbor. St.Maarten/St. Martin, thehalf-Dutch, half-Frenchisland less than 10 milesaway, recorded nearly457,000 stay-over guestslast year and 1.75 millionvisitors arriving by cruiseship.
Anguilla is ringed by 33unspoiled white sandbeaches fronting the Ca-ribbean’s multi-hued bluewaters. There are a handfulof upscale resorts and anincreasing number ofmega-luxury villas, soughtout by A-listers and well-known figures from theworld of entertainment,sports and politics. Butthere are plenty of less pri-cey accommodations,though with fewer ameni-ties, located on beachesjust as stunning.
The island boasts morethan 100 restaurants, fromupscale gourmet diningspots to barefoot casualbeach bars, including thoselocated on offshore islandslike Sandy Island, PricklyPear Cay and Scilly Cay.With only about 13,000residents, Anguilla is simi-lar to a big small town withenough dining choices totry a new place every weekfor two years.
My own introduction toAnguilla dates to 2000,when I read Melinda andRobert Blanchard’s A Tripto the Beach: Living on Is-land Time in the Carib-bean. It is the couple’s sto-ry of leaving their homestate of Vermont to build asmall restaurant in Anguil-la. A year after openingBlanchards in 1994, therestaurant was destroyedwhen Hurricane Luis dev-astated the island.
Blanchards reopenedand has become an islandinstitution, hailed as one ofthe Caribbean’s best res-
taurants. Most popular isthe fixed-price menu, withthree choices offered foreach course, including sev-eral of the restaurant’s sig-nature dishes. It’s a bar-gain, relatively speaking, at$48 per person. In late 2011,Blanchards opened BeachShack next to the main res-taurant for lunch and din-ner in a more casual set-ting.
Beaches and nightlifeThe closest you’ll find to acrowded beach is at SandyGround, where boats andyachts from around theworld are docked. It’s alsothe spot to watch boatraces during Carnival, heldthe first week in August,and at other timesthroughout the spring andsummer. Boat racing, a tra-dition dating to the early1900s, is considered An-guilla’s national sport.
Just when you thinkyou’ve found your favoritestrand of sand, you’ll findanother that’s just as invit-ing, like Cove Bay, a longstretch of nearly desertedbeach with calm, crystal-line waters where we stop-ped for lunch at Smokey’sat the Cove. Locatedbeachside on Crocus Bay isda’Vida Restaurant andBayside Grill, where themenu tempts with intrigu-ing items like shrimp pizzatopped with Caesar salad.
Nightlife on Anguilla,albeit a bit subdued, isn’tnonexistent; you just haveto know where to find yourmusical match. Lovers ofreggae music will want tospend an evening at theDune Preserve restaurantand beach bar, situated onRendezvous Bay near the
CuisinArt Resort, wherethe island’s most famousreggae entertainer, BankieBanx, performs four days aweek.
The Pumphouse inSandy Ground Village andElvis’ Beach Bar next doorare also among Anguilla’sbest places to party andmingle with locals, touristsand the occasional celebri-ty.
Thursday night at Ana-caona Hotel’s Firefly Res-taurant is not to be missedfor those who would like toexperience a bit of Anguil-la’s culture. Come for theCaribbean buffet and stayfor a musical floor showperformed by the localMayoumba folkloretroupe.
A favorite spot to watchthe sun slip into the seawith appetizers anddrinks before dinner atCoba or another nearbyrestaurant is the SunsetLounge at the Viceroy ho-tel, straddling Barnes Bayand Meads Bay.
Sunday is perhaps thebiggest day on Anguillafor local entertainment.
Everywhere you go,you’re likely to find peoplesand mashing, the localterm for dancing to themusic Anguilla-style.
Even Scilly Cay gets in-to the act, inviting localreggae bands to perform.Have two of Eudoxie’srum punches, then trywalking on water. Or, justtake a swim.
