Mike Mestan to be formally installed at NYCC

the investiture of Michael A. Mestan, D.C., Ed.D.

Did you know, that Trinity

Church has had a scholarship

in place at Mynderse Academy

for the past three years? The

scholarship came about when

the church received a gift of $1,000 from a former

parishioner who many years ago had received

funds from Trinity towards her education. She

asked that her gift be used to help others achieve

their educational pursuits. The vestry approved

using the funds as an award of $200 a year for

five years.

2017 was the third year the vestry provided

this award to a senior, chosen by the school, who

is interested in a career in the field of health or

religion. The students are chosen not only for

their career interests, but also attendance, grades,

and fulfillment of their hours donated to com-

munity service. As we near 2019, the vestry will

discuss the continuation of the award. ~M. Cator

Are you a saint?

All Saints’ Day, November 1,

is the Church’s Memorial Day,

the day we remember those

who have lived and died in the

faith. On this day we celebrate

the communion of saints and recognize God’s

wish for all believers to be sanctified – made

whole - holy saints of God.

From the very earliest days the Church has

viewed all baptized people as members of the

Body of Christ. Through the sacrament of

baptism all believers, both living and dead, are

united in the “communion of saints”.

Famous as well as everyday saints serve to

show us how to be Christ’s faithful followers and

his servants in the world. They valued their

unique God-given personalities, gifts, talents, and

experiences and used them in building his

Kingdom – by both receiving from and giving to

one another and by bringing others to Him in

Christ’s name. Like the saints before and around

us, we will find our greatest happiness and

deepest fulfillment through our experiences of

God’s presence and in becoming the people He

intends us to be.

Transitioning

The process of transitioning to new

clergy leadership involves two

basic parts. The Transition Team’s

task was to ascertain the gifts and abilities

desired in the new clergy person and to tell

Trinity’s story. Reading the completed reports will

help prospective candidates determine whether their

gifts match what our congregation is seeking. The

second part of the process is the task of the

Clergy Search Team. Its job is to interview

interested clergy to see who is most compatible

with Trinity.

In April 2017, the Transition Team consisting

of chair, Diane Draheim, John Eddy, Debby

Perrotto, and Erin Tiesi met to begin the

transition process at Trinity. Father Gaetz and

the Rev. Canon Carrie Schofield-Broadbent,

Canon for Transition in the diocese, explained the

tasks the committee needed to complete. First,

the team invited the congregation to identify the

qualities they were looking for in a priest. This

was done through individual discussions, coffee

hour chats, phone conversations, and comments

gathered at various group meetings. The team

used the responses to create Trinity’s Clergy Job

Description. Once the Vestry reviewed it, it was

sent to the diocese.

The second task was to establish our parish pro-

file. Mother Carrie suggested we use Trinity’s web-

site to tell our story: our history, current life, and

ministries. The team is very grateful to Betty Canne

for her help and expertise in adding the finished

profile to Trinity’s website. We then completed

the Community Ministry Review. It gives clergy

additional information about our parish. This

document will be posted on the diocesan website.

Our final task was to prayerfully consider recom-

mending a slate of parishioners to serve on Trinity’s

Search Team. That list has been given to the Vestry.

The Parish Profile the team completed is found

under various headings ( NEW or VISITING, HISTORY,

MINISTRIES, etc.) on the home page of Trinity’s

website http://trinitychurchsenecafalls.com.

Below is a sampling of the Clergy Job Description:

Guides us to new growth & experiences Caring

Encourages transparency Sense of humor

Enthusiastic Skilled in conflict resolution

Inspirational sermons A healthy assertive leader

A complete job description can be found on the

tables at the back of the church, outside the office,

and on the Communication Board. ~Debby Perrotto

OFFICE UPDATE: The church office’s

hours have been changed. The office is

now open from 10 am until noon, Tues-

day through Friday, unless it is an espe-

cially busy week.

As always, keep us informed of any

address changes, email changes, or illnesses. We

appreciate receiving your announcements early

in the week, but no later than Thursday morning,

so that they may be included in the bulletins.

Vestry Highlights 2017

1) Clerk of the Vestry: The vestry appointed

Mary Olga Hartman as the new clerk.

2) Bill Boden Estate: Fr. Gaetz and Fr. Haugaard

are executors of the will. Bill Boden’s estate is

to be split 50-50 between Trinity and St. Paul’s,

Waterloo. In August Bill’s more valuable items

were sold at auction. The vestry will put a

committee together to prepare for investment

and responsible planning.

3) Lady Chapel: Bill Boden was known by some

for his faithful devotion to keeping the chapel

clean, taking proper care of the statue, watering

the plants, etc. The vestry is very grateful to

Freda Wilson for taking on this responsibility.

4) Investments: Father Gaetz explained one

investment plan and its purpose. It is a plan

to do two things: preserve the principal and

serve Trinity’s mission. The vestry needs to look

at each investment firm’s service, track

record, and availability. The vestry discussed

two firms as possibilities.

5) Transitioning: Fr. Gaetz sees great potential

at Trinity; the church has a great location,

demographic, and great “worker bees.” The

team has provided progress reports of their

tasks and handed in the necessary paperwork.

Fr. Gaetz commended the team for all their

hard work. See also Debby Perrotto’s article.

6) Girl Scouts: The vestry approved a motion

for Kathryn Woods’ service unit to use Trinity

as their home base in November. On the 11th

more than 100 girls will be working on their

scout badge devoted to women’s suffrage.

7) Lay Delegates: Diane Draheim and Judy

Tiesi will serve as Trinity’s delegates to the

diocesan convention in November. The alter-

nates are Irene Ferrante and Betty Canne.

8) 2017 Audit: Betty Canne will check out the CPA

firm, D’Arcangelo & Sons.

9) Pew End Candlesticks: One decision to be made:

Should we purchase new “sticks” or refurbish

the wrought iron ones we have? It was also

suggested to ask the congregation’s opinion

whether to donate toward their purchase or to

make memorial donations.

10) House and Grounds

a) Heating: A motion was carried to purchase

a new motor for the boiler.

b) Lighting in the Parish Hall: Betty Canne will

apply for a grant that would pay 70% of

the cost for LED lights. Trinity would pay

the remaining 30%.

Copies of the minutes are available in the parish

hall on the Communication Board.

Have you remembered Trinity

in your will?

Computer Geek – Why can’t B 1?

As we Silver Surfers know, sometimes we have

trouble with our computers. Let me, Mr. Waters,

tell you about one of those times.

Mr. Waters: “Yesterday, I had a problem, so I

called Georgie, the 11 year old next door, whose

bedroom looks like Mission Control, and asked

him to come over. Georgie clicked a couple of

buttons, solved the problem, and began to walk

away.

Mr. Waters: (calling after Georgie) “So what was

wrong?”

Georgie: “It was an ID ten T error.”

Mr. Waters: (not wanting to appear stupid, but giving in)

“An ID ten T error? What’s that? Just in case I need

to fix it again.”

Georgie (grinning): “Haven’t you ever heard of an

ID ten T error before?”

Mr. Waters: “No, I haven’t.”

Georgie: “Then write it down. (pause) I think

you'll figure it out.”

Mr. Waters: “So I wrote down . . .”

ID10T

Mr. Waters: “Harrumph! I used to like Georgie,

but lately he’s become SUCH a SMART-aleck!”
