A time to remember...

L ate October to early November, churches often remember our lost loved ones by means of Bereavement Services and those who have lost their lives in global conflict over the years -Armistice Sunday

Remembering can bring about a mixture of emotions. Perhaps we have lost a spouse, child, relative or friend, and we are saddened when we remember, but it can sometimes bring about a sweet or humorous remembrance of them.

Armistice in November is a time when we remember those who gave their lives in two World Wars, in the Gulf, Afghanistan, the Falklands , not forgetting victims of terrorism such as 9/11, Borough Market, Westminster Bridge etc. Indeed to put all this in perspective historians tell us that over the last 5000 years of recorded world history there have only been 89 years of peace in the world and the reality is probably even less years of peace.

Many today living in the West, have forgotten the spiritual dimension to life. King George VI called for two national days of prayer during WW2. And many attribute the answers to these days of prayer as bringing about the ending of the Battle of Britain and the rescue of 338000 souls at Dunkirk which Churchill himself described as ‘a miracle.’

It’s only right that we should remember them, and the horrors they endured, and our own pain hurt and guilt we may have suffered or caused to others.

Remember the thief on the cross, dying next to Jesus, asked Jesus to ‘remember him when Jesus came into His Kingdom’ This thief realised that Jesus was the sinless Saviour, whereas the thief, knew he was a sinner and deserved his punishment.

Perhaps this November we will turn our thoughts to Jesus as our Saviour, who gave His life for us, taking the punishment that we deserve for all our wrong doing, knowing that we can be forgiven. For Jesus himself said, “whoever comes to Me I will in no way cast out”

Peter

Harvest Festival Thank you to everyone who supported the Harvest Festival, Harvest Auction and enjoyed the lovely supper at The Hopper Lane. Harvest hampers went to 15 local residents, many thanks to Denise Eagland for arranging and delivering – appreciation from one and all.

The Harvest Auction raised £432 for Blubberhouses Church restoration funds. Arm twisting by Blubberhouses own auctioneer, Kevin Wilson, created atmosphere for enjoyment and generous donations.

Stained Glass Windows

The East Window is sparkling, repaired ironwork and renovation of the glass has resulted in all three lights looking brilliant. The work on the remaining windows will be proceed soon.

Martin Johnson and Co, Stained glass and window conservators, of York are the experts carrying out this work.

Christmas Cards Delightful new designs, featuring the stained glass windows, available from Alison 01943 880192, Daphne 880268, Pat 880284 and Deborah Power, Treasurer. In packs of 6 for £5 – also in churches.

Paul Howell, photographer, is on board with photographs for Christmas cards and the 2020 calendar with views of Blubberhouses Church and our scenic Washburn Valley.

Join The Friends New members to support the Friends of Blubberhouses Church are most welcome, just come along to any event, have a word.

Sincere thanks to everyone for their support

The rows of headstones silent stand Their message clear, though mute; That we, in Britain’s peaceful land

Must silently salute.

Our peace was bought at dreadful price Through rain and fear and mud –

World conflict fought not once but twice So twice the cost in blood.

Each headstone bears a single name A single husband, son,

Who, when the call to duty came They did what must be done.

So, think upon those rows of stones Be silent, still as they

Remind us of those silent homes From when they went away.

Yes, spare a while to think of them It’s just two minutes’ time;

And say aloud, just once again That well-remembered rhyme:

They grow not old as we grow old, Nor do the years condemn;

But as the days and nights unfold, We will remember them.

Washburn Parish Council

A t the recent Parish Council meeting the council held discussions on the repairs required to the damaged viewfinder that overlooks Swinsty Reservoir located on Maud Lane. Council were dismayed that the damage had been caused by a disposable barbecue.

A major topic of debate related to the future status of Billy Lane in Timble. The Council heard views from a number of residents as well as considered written representations. The Council resolved to maintain its objection to the current order to record Billy Lane as a Restricted Byway.

The Council were informed that commuted sums held by Harrogate Borough Council had been secured for use at Fewston Cemetery and the parish caretaker would be undertaking works on the water butt and benches.

At the meeting the Council also reported new highways issues, responded to new planning applications received and instructed maintenance works in the Parish.

The next meeting of Washburn Parish Council will be held on Monday 29th October 2018 at the Robinson Library in Timble. Commencing at 7.30pm. Should you wish to contact any of your councillors please email [email protected]

T he club had a great summer with success once again at the County rally!

This was a massive effort by all the members with hard work and lots of practice really

paying off. The club won the overall and most of the team trophies and there were a lot of individual success too. In the display section we did very well with Joe Grove’s wooden model farmyard and James Driffield’s cheese board winners in their class.

Judges did very well across the board, especially Katie Liddle 1st intermediate Breeding sheep, Luby Grayshon 1st senior Butchers lamb, Lucy Groves 1st Junior Hound judging, Jacob Ryder 1st junior Pig Judging and Josh Ryder 1st senior Pig judging.

The flower arrangers must also get a big well done, Gemma Farrar 1st juniors and Emily Farrar 1st intermediate. The cookery team had 3 very young but keen junior girls competing for the first time! They came a very commendable 2nd place. Well done everyone.

The 6th June was a great meeting after everyone’s hard work at the rally. A visit to Billy Bobs Ice cream Parlour. We had a massive turn out and were really well looked after by Gary and his family who gave us a tour round and even let us all have a free ice cream.

June was an exceptionally busy month for our members. The 13th was a practice farm evaluation, kindly hosted by Nick and Julie Houseman at Prospect farm. We all got to have a go valuing livestock and machinery ready for the district Evaluation, the next week.

On the 15th some of our members took part in the annual rounder’s competition held at Burnsall and hosted by Wharfedale YFC. This was a good fun night and although we had 2 of the youngest teams competing, we were always in contention. One team managed to get through to the semi finals where they met their match against Burnsall cricket club members.

20th was the District Evaluation and Farnleys turn to host it. Many thanks to the Bush family for allowing us to use their farm as a venue. It was a very successful night with all machinery and livestock a credit to them. Julie Houseman was on hand to provide some very tasty pork sandwiches. Felliscliffe took the overall trophy, but our members held their own with the club coming 2nd. Tom Bradley won the intermediates and Joe Groves came 2nd in the juniors.

22nd June was a Race Night organised by the members

at the Hopper Lane Hotel. A good night was had by all with all the races and horses sold out. £950 was raised for club funds. We are hoping there will be more nights like this next year!

23rd Northern Area Field Day was another great day for the club and enjoyed by everyone who competed or went to support. Members took part in competitions ranging from singing a hunting song to a secure load challenge. There were a lot of great individual results and Yorkshire A did well, they came 2nd overall, but the best result of the day came from a make shift team of Holly Roberts, Daisy Roberts, Katie Liddle, Jacob Ryder, Charlie Ryder and Izzy Bush. They had to complete a water themed assault course dressed as farmers through the ages. What pace and desire they all showed as they managed to transport the most amount of water around in the quickest time, all the time sporting the best costume by far, taking 1st place.

A busy weekend to say the least came nest. On the 29th June we had some very good stock judges competing at Craven Cattle market for the Yorkshire show judging. Farnley took the overall club trophy and the trophy for most points in combined cattle judging. There was some fantastic individual result.

Junior Beef – 1st James Driffield

3rd Jacob Ryder

Senior Beef - 3rd Josh Ryder

Junior Pigs - 1st Jacob Ryder

2nd Charlie Ryder

Junior Dairy - 2nd Holly Roberts

3rd Gemma Farrar

Well done everyone who took part.

The 30th June and 1st July were very memorable and great for the club. The 30th June was the National Finals of the Public Speaking Competition. Jacob Ryder speaking as part of the Yorkshire and Northern Area A team was hoping to become the first member from Farnley Estate to win this prestigious competition. Unfortunately, it was not to be (this year), but he came away with 3rd on the day and a great experience competing with some extremely talented individuals. His 2 teammates, both from Silsden with Skipton FYC came first as Chairman and Vote of Thanks which enabled them a 2nd overall, just 2 points behind the winners.

Farnley Estate Young Farmers Club By Jacob Ryder

T he 1st July was the National final of the Dodgeball competition. The Farnley team had really bonded through the earlier rounds and came into the final unbeaten.

We were drawn into 2 leagues with the winners of each competing in the final. The main competition was the local Staffordshire team who seemed to have one outstanding player. We got through to the Final game, a best of 5, we won the first 2 games quite easily and then let the other team back in! so, it was down to the last game, this is where our team work paid off and the opposition seemed like a one-man team. We won the final game making it 3-2 to Farnley Estate, which saw us retain the trophy we won last year at the rounders. What a team! Joe Groves, Dan Farrar, Jacob Ryder, Jess Barker, Lucy Groves, Daisy Roberts, Charlie Ryder and Josh Groves.

14th July again Farnley had a strong team taking part at the Northern Area Stockman of the Year competition hosted by Lancashire.

Senior Luby Grayshon 3rd Beef

Emily Farrar 4th Beef

Junior Gemma Farrah 1st Dairy and 4th overall

Jacob Ryder 1st Beef and 3rd Pigs

Holly Roberts 1st Beef

Daisy Roberts 3rd Breeding sheep

This was a great end to the judging season and a real credit to all that have competed throughout the year.

18th July we had an end of season family night at Spofforth Cricket club. Well done to our 2 chefs Matt and Jim, not a burnt sausage to be found! We had a rodeo bull and a great game of football-rugby! We even had an ice cream van who did flying trade.

11th august our members Josh Ryder and Francesca Rathmell tied the knot. A lot of members were at the wedding to help them celebrate a wonderful day. We also did a guard of honour as the newly weds left the church. We wish the new couple well and look forward to seeing their daughter Remy at the club soon!

31st August, we had 2 members competing at the National Final of the Stockman of the Year competition. New member Emily Bradley and Luby Grayshon, both did very well with Luby winning the pig judging part.

5th September. We have started the new 2018/2019 season. This was the first meeting of the year. A min

rally at the Farrar’s. there must have been nearly 60 members competing in a range of competitions from judging cows and lambs to identifying herbs and breeds of dogs. This is a very popular night, thank you to Matt and Becky for organising it all and providing a lovely supper.

Results Junior 1st Daisy Roberts

Seniors 1st Emily Farrar

19th September was our Annual General Meeting. We had a packed room at Almscliffe village hall with members keen for positions of office within the club. We have a new team at the top of James Driffield chairman and Francesca Ryder as secretary. Izzy Bush is minutes secretary and Billie Towers is the new treasurer. We also had a change of club leaders with Caroline Liddle stepping down and Jim Roberts joining Matt and Ben. The club thanked Emily for all that she had done as chairman the previous year and also Caroline on her 2 years as club leader.

The last finals of the year were at Malvern Show on 29/30th September. On the Saturday we had our very young team of cooks taking part in the National final for the first time! Anna Bunton, Izzy Bush and Georgina Featherstone did brilliantly they came 15th, even with a dodgy cooker! What a great achievement by them and all that helped.

The 30th was the finals of the flower arranging where we had (amazingly) 4 members competing. They all did very well indeed with great results

Holly Roberts J u n i o r s 5th

Gemma Farrar J u n i o r s 7th

Emily Farrar Intermediates 9th

Heidi Craighead S e n i o r s 15th

That capped off a brilliant year for the club, good luck to everyone this year!

As always if anyone would like to come and join our club, age 10-26 we meet weekly at 7.30pm, contact James Driffield on 07552779350 or Francesca Ryder on 07904400335.
