A for adding rational numbers

I learned that when adding rational numbers first, you turn them into improper fractions. Then, you multiply to get a common denominator. Finally, you add the numbers and reduce to the simplest form.

B for B.E.D.M.A.SThis year I learned how to use the exponents and brackets in B.E.D.M.A.S.

Anything in front of the brackets you multiply the contents of the brackets with.

Exponents is the second step and you just do what you would do with exponents.

C for Coefficient I learned that the number placed before a variable is the coefficient

The coefficient is multiplied by the variable behind it.

Example: 6X the coefficient in this example is 6 because it comes before X.

D for distributive property

I learned about distributive property and that if the there is a number before a pair of brackets you multiply what is in the brackets by the number on the left side to the brackets.

E for ExponentI learned that exponents are LAZY and only multiply the coefficient in front of them.

Make sure you remember that to multiply your exponent as it is the second letter in BEDMAS!!!

F for multiplying FRACTIONS

I learned that while multiplying fractions, following Mrs. Burton's rule of JUST DO IT ... All you have to do is multiply denominators with denominators and numerators with numerators then reduce.

G for Graphs

I learned how to use graphs to check my answer from linear relation questions using a t chart.

H for Hypotenuse I learned that the hypotenuse is important to know when trying to find angles and sides of triangles, you can use Pythagorean's theorem.

I also learned that the hypotenuse is directly opposite of the right angle.

I for IsolateTo make your answers more accurate I learned that you need to isolate variables.

This is used a lot while using B.E.D.M.A.S.

Example, look at the bottom where it is 2X over 2, this is isolating the variable to get it by itself.

J for just do it

The "JUST DO IT" rule is important because it has taught me that when it doubt just do it and you will get the answer wether it is to multiply or divide.

K for know your angles!!During the circle geometry unit we learned about different angles such as acute angles, right angles, obtuse angles, straight angles, reflex angles and full rotation angles.

L for linear relationsThis year I have learned to solve linear relation problems. In leaner relation questions there is always an equal sign and a variable. Often you use a graph to demonstrate your work.

M for multiplication law

I learned that in the multiplication law that when you have to exponents that want to multiply just add the exponents together to get your answer.

N for number lines

I have learned that number lines are very useful when it comes to demonstrating rational numbers and fractions.

O for order of rotation

I learned that when working with the order of rotation. 1st you count how many equal parts you have then divide that number by 360 and then you will get the angle degree for each angle.

P for power lawI learned that the power is used in the exponent unit.

And that you have to multiply both exponents together like in the example to get your answer.

Q for power of a QUOTIENT

I learned in the exponent unit about power of a quotient which was following one of Mrs. Burton's main rules which was JUST DO IT!!! ✔️

R for reciprocal

I learned that a reciprocal of a fraction all you have to do is flip the fraction.

Page 20: A To Z Math Project - Riverside Secondary Schoolmyriverside.sd43.bc.ca/.../files/2015/06/A-Z-math-project-22e81rb.pdf · A To Z Math Project Heather Campbell Block B. ... you add

S for surface areaI learned that when finding the Surface area you use the formula: SA: = 2(l x w+w x h+h x l)

I also learned when solving this equation you write it in a mathematical paragraph.

T for trinominal

I learned that within a trinominal is 3 terms. In the picture an example of terms would be -3, 4X, -X2

U for variablesVariable I learned are important to use in many of the units we did in math 9 because it helps you find the unknown or missing information.

Using variables you can use any letter in the alphabet but the most common one to use is X.

Page 23: A To Z Math Project - Riverside Secondary Schoolmyriverside.sd43.bc.ca/.../files/2015/06/A-Z-math-project-22e81rb.pdf · A To Z Math Project Heather Campbell Block B. ... you add

W for whole numberA whole number is a number that IS NOT a fraction or a decimal. It's important to know in case you get a question asking for you to round the answer to the nearest whole number.

Page 24: A To Z Math Project - Riverside Secondary Schoolmyriverside.sd43.bc.ca/.../files/2015/06/A-Z-math-project-22e81rb.pdf · A To Z Math Project Heather Campbell Block B. ... you add

X for x axisThe X axis is the horizontal line in the graph from left to right on the left side it is negative on the right hand side it is positive I remember that it is the X axis because the Y axis is always your vertical.

Page 25: A To Z Math Project - Riverside Secondary Schoolmyriverside.sd43.bc.ca/.../files/2015/06/A-Z-math-project-22e81rb.pdf · A To Z Math Project Heather Campbell Block B. ... you add

Y for y axis The Y axis is the line that goes vertically up-and-down in the graph

What I learned is how to remember which one is the y axis how I remember: think of your vertical you think of jumping and you jump up and down.

I learned that Zero pairs lets us eliminate numbers out our equation to make it simpler.

Zero pairs have been used in many of our units this year.
