Activities to be funded under the grant include lunchroom composting, paper recycling, composting of landscape waste, and curriculum lessons including professional development for teachers, staff, and parents; classroom vermiculture composting (using worms to create compost); and lessons to tie the sustainability projects to the school curriculum. Working with the schools on the grant projects is Project Central, a local consulting firm focusing on science and environmental education. “We are very excited that the projects were selected for funding, and are eager to begin working with the students, teachers, staff, and parents to reduce the amount of trash being sent to the landfill,” Project Central president Shari Wilson stated. The kickoff for the sustainability program took place at the Primary Elementary on Monday, February 2 with a performance by Eco Elvis. Following breakfast and lunch, students will dispose waste in three separate bins: recycle, compost and landfill. Funding for the grant is provided by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and Mid-America Regional Council Solid Waste Management District. Smithville Primary Elementary Receives Grant Funding for Sustainability Program

Smithville Schools - creating a premier learn Six Candidates Filed for Board of Education Seats

The Smithville R-II School District Board of Education election will take place on April 7, 2015. Two seats on the Board will become available. The two seats are currently occupied by Bill Becker and Pat Huke. The following candidates filed for these seats: Kenneth G. Rumney, Michelle Lynn Kruse, Greg Vincent*, Brian David Stevens, William “Jeff” Becker and Robert Lee Russell. Candidates are listed in the order in which they will appear on the ballot. *Greg Vincent no longer considers himself a candidate for the Board, and will not serve on the Board if elected.

Annual Board Recognition Dinner On Wednesday, December 17, 2014, the Board of Education hosted a dinner to recognize community and staff members for extraordinary support to the school district, staff and students. Dinner was provided by Opaa! Food Management, Inc. The Board Member and their honorees are listed below.

First Semester Student Recognition At the January 21, 2015 Board of Education meeting, several students were recognized for demonstrating excellence in academic & co-curricular activities.

The high school recognized the #1 ranked students in each class for their academic achievements. The middle school recognized leadership students for their efforts in planning the student events and securing donations for refreshments on the December early release day; the student council for being elected State 2nd Vice President; and band students for participating in All-District Band. The Upper Elementary School honored the officers of Tribe Pride and highlighted the many service and philanthropic efforts planned and implemented throughout the year. The Primary Elementary School recognized several students who excelled at meeting their reading goals.

Rotary Students of the Month

Smithville Rotarian's recognize a high school senior on a monthly basis. Selected students are positive representatives of their school. The following students were recognized during first semester: Tony Del Pico (September); Autumn Gupta (October); Kaleb Reid (November); and Josh Lizar (December).

Rotary Teacher of the Semester

Sarah Young was recognized by the Smithville Rotary Club as Teacher of the Semester. This is Young's second year serving students in the Smithville School District. She teaches 1st-5th grade gifted education. Royal Fireworks Press recently published her book The Salem Witch Trials: A Problem-Based Learning Unit. She is currently pursuing her Education Specialist from Arkansas State University. She and her husband, Tyler, enjoy spending time with family and friends.

Golden Passes Golden Passes offer free admission to many district events. Athletic conference tournaments are not included. Golden Passes are available to any individual who is 62 years of age or older. This is a lifetime pass and need not be renewed. To obtain a Golden Pass, stop by the Smithville School District Office, 655 S. Commercial Avenue.

The Smithville R-II Educational Foundation is proud to announce the establishment of its Alumni Wall of Fame. The Wall of Fame program is designed to recognize and honor Smithville R-II School District graduates who have distinguished themselves and contributed to society in an exemplary fashion. Their successes will serve as motivation and inspiration to all associated with the Smithville School District. The Smithville R-II Educational Foundation inducted its first class of outstanding graduates into the Smithville R-II Educational Foundation Alumni Wall of Fame on January 20, 2015. A reception was held at the Smithville Performing Arts Center to honor the inductees along with their families and friends. The induction took place during half-time of the boys’ basketball game in the High School Gymnasium. District Welcomes New Leadership

At the January 21, 2015 Board of Education meeting, Denise Harwood, Tod Winterboer and Dr. Michael Bartig were named principals starting with the 2015-2016 school year.

Denise Harwood Last June, Mrs. Harwood began working as the interim principal replacing Dr. Mandy Welch, who left the district to serve in a new role at Missouri University of Science and Technology.

Prior to serving in her current role, Harwood served as the assistant principal of the Smithville Primary Elementary School and the Upper Elementary School beginning in 2012. She came to Smithville with six years of experience as an elementary principal and one as an elementary assistant principal in the Eldon School District, Eldon, MO. Prior to her tenure as a principal, Harwood taught for eight years.

Harwood resides in Smithville along with her husband, Eddie, and their two daughters, Shae and Corinne. Tod Winterboer Mr. Winterboer will replace Dr. Matt Teeter, who is leaving the district to serve as the superintendent of the Smithton R-VI School District. Winterboer has served as the assistant principal of Smithville Middle School since the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year. Prior to his service at the Middle School, Winterboer taught Psychology, Sociology and Criminal Justice at Smithville High School for five years. Prior to becoming a Warrior, Winterboer served as the high school principal in Lathrop for six years.

Winterboer resides in Smithville along with his wife, Julie, their daughter, Gabrielle and their son, Dane. Dr. Michael Bartig Dr. Bartig is currently serving as the Director of Curriculum, Assessment, and Data Analysis for the Kearney R-I School District. Prior to his service in Kearney, Bartig served in the Kirksville School District as the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for three years and a middle school principal for seven years. Bartig has also served as a middle school assistant principal, high school assistant principal and Biology/Physical Science teacher in Lincoln County Public Schools.

Bartig resides in Kearney along with his wife and children.
