Smithville Primary Elementary Receives Grant Funding for Sustainability Program
Five Kansas City-area schools, including Smithville Primary Elementary, have been chosen to receive grant funding to increase the sustainability of their facilities. Activities to be funded under the grant include lunchroom composting, paper recycling, composting of landscape waste, and curriculum lessons including professional development for teachers, staff, and parents; classroom vermiculture composting (using worms to create compost); and lessons to tie the sustainability projects to the school curriculum. Working with the schools on the grant projects is Project Central, a local consulting firm focusing on science and environmental education. “We are very excited that the projects were selected for funding, and are eager to begin working with the students, teachers, staff, and parents to reduce the amount of trash being sent to the landfill,” Project Central president Shari Wilson stated. The kickoff for the sustainability program took place at the Primary Elementary on Monday, February 2 with a performance by Eco Elvis. Following breakfast and lunch, students will dispose waste in three separate bins: recycle, compost and landfill. Funding for the grant is provided by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and Mid-America Regional Council Solid Waste Management District.
