1. INTRODUCTIONThis report presents the results of the Earth Resistivity Tests carried out by AL JAZZAR

(Omar Jazzar Consulting Engineers), Geotechnical & Materials Engineers , for the proposedconstruction of 380kV Over Head Transmission Line (OHTL) from Shoaiba-3 S/S to Al-LithBSP, K.S.A. The work was authorized by M/s. Saudi Services for Electro Mechanic WorksCompany (SSEM) Ltd., Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The field work was conducted at (Tower # 08 to 68) sixty one (61) locations between 27th

September and 13th November 2013.

This report describes the work done and the results obtained at the site of proposed

construction of 380kV Over Head Transmission Line (OHTL) from Shoaiba-3 S/S to Al-LithBSP, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

1.1 PURPOSE & SCOPE OF WORK

T he purpose of conducting earth resistivity test for the construction of construction of 380kV

Over Head Transmission Line (OHTL) from Shoaiba-3 S/S to Al-Lith BSP,, K.S.A, is toevaluate the surface condition and to determine the apparent electrical resistivity values foruse in the design of earthing and grounding system and also for the evaluation of thecorrosion potential on buried pipes as well as concrete in general.

2. PROCEDURE OF TEST

V ertical electrical sounding were conducted at each test location. The electrical resistivity

was measured by using Wenner Array Method in accordance with ASTM G57-78 and IEEE-81 Standards.

Variations in resistivity at depth were obtained by increasing the spacing of the electrodes.The increased spacing forces the current to flow deeper into the earth in order to completethe circuit, thereby increasing the depth of penetration. The depth of penetration equalsapproximately the electrode spacing ‘a’. The electrode spacing used was 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9,11, 13 & 15 meter along the North-South and the East-West direction at the test location.

2.1 INSTRUMENTATION

T he instrument is battery powered with an output voltage up to 90 volts which is called

Meggar. The current output range of the transmitter is up to 150 milli amperes. The Receiverunit has a range of 1 to 4,000 milli volts. 12 volt rechargeable battery supplies initial powerfor the instrument.

The battery can be recharged by plugging to the external cord to 120 volts 50/60 cycle ACbattery condition which can be determined by the current reading on the front panel orpressing the “Battery Check “push button.

The instrument is supplied with four (4) pieces of steel electrodes and cable reel assembly.The longer cables are meant for connection to current (outer) electrodes to the transmitterunit and the short cables are meant for connection to potential (inner) electrodes to thereceiver.

When current is passed to the ground from the transmitter, through the two outer electrodes,theoretical equi-potential current flow lines are developed by induction around eachelectrode. Consequently, a potential difference is developed between the inner (potential)electrodes.

Potential difference between the potential electrodes can be read from the receiver unit whilethe value of current that give rise to the potential difference can be read from the transmitter

unit.

2.2 DATA ANALYSIS

T he apparent resistivity of the ground between the inner electrodes is given by the formula.

Pa = KR = 2 π a’R

where, Pa = Apparent resistivity in ohm-meter (or V/I)

K = geometric factor, equals 2π a’

R = apparent resistance of the ground between twoinner electrodes.

a’ = electrode spacing in meter.

3. RESULTS OF ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY MEASUREMENTS

T he test results are shown in Table 1.1 to 1.61. The Table 2 & 3 given at the end of this

report shall be used for comparing the resistivity values obtained from the different test doneas per the different test directions as well as with the changes of soil strata. The maximumand minimum values of the resistivity tests for the test location shows that the corrosivityobtained from the test results ranges from 0.3 ohm-meter to 3698.1 ohm-meter indicates

very severe to very mild corrosivity of the soil.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS

T he interpretation of resistivity values should be done carefully as the same type of soil/rock

can show different values at different moisture contents and depending on degree ofweathering. Hence, the information on local geological conditions and experience of thegeologist will lead to the conclusions during interpretations. However, the values obtained attests should not be referred directly on the figures given in the tables 2 & 3. It is a guide forcomparison only.

The measured resistivity will be dependent on the degree of compaction/relative density,

moisture content, type of soil/rock, layering of soil strata, rock fissures, cavities, presence offoreign matter, temperature and so on.Yours very truly,
