What influences who we are?

• There are many things we consider to be part of the UK’s lifestyle. But are these things truly British?

• The next 10 slides all show pictures from different countries. You need to identify each country.

Communities and Identities

• Being part of a community makes you feel that you belong. People usually belong to several different communities, and these help to shape our identity, the way we see ourselves.

• We are part of a local community – our neighbourhood – and we are also part of larger communities (like a city, a town or a country) where lots of different groups of people live.

• Sometimes people feel they belong and

sometimes they feel that nobody cares about them and that they don’t belong.

Belonging to a Community

• For many, a community is about belonging.

• Most people feel they belong to communities with whom they have something in common, such as age, language, hobbies, job they do, or the religious beliefs they share.

• Many people are part of several communities that overlap – e.g., school, friends, family and

neighbours, clubs, ethnic group, place of worship.

• Draw a diagram to show the different communities you feel you belong to.

• Are these all with people your own age, or do you share communities with people of different ages? Add this information to your diagram.

• Discuss your diagram with the group. Are there any overlapping communities within your class? Why do you feel that you belong to these communities?

Today’s SocietyFrom looking at the previous slides we can see that many countries from around the world have an effect on the way we live today.

However, not everyone in Britain can see the positive effects on our lives.

Living Together in Communities

• Communities do not always live happily together.

• Sometimes people judge each other by things like age, ethnic group, religion, wealth and class. They don’t get to know each other, so they don’t trust each other.

• What sorts of things do old people say about young people?

• Why do they say these things? Discuss why old and young people hold these sorts of views about each other in this country.

Ali’s story “I was out with my friends when these bigger boys came over and said that we should go back to our own country. I said I’d been born here and they said that I was being cheeky and grabbed my arm and threw me to the ground. One of them jumped on my arm and two others tried to kick me! Then they ran away, calling me names as they went. I was really upset because they’d been so nasty to me.”

Multicultural Day Task Imagine that your school is holding a

multicultural day in order to raise awareness of such racial attacks.

In groups design a banner and posters to advertise the day. Your work should emphasise the importance of living together in peace and harmony.

People should realise that Britain's society is changing and is now multicultural.
