Problem Solving – Remember that you need a picture, equation, and sentence. Spencer and Alfie are planning a party. They bought four boxes of treats that each have 24 treats inside. To the nearest ten, about how many treats do Spencer and Alfie have?
Reading Practice - Read the paragraph and use text evidence to prove your answer.
Aphids Aphids are tiny insects that feed on plant sap, or juice. They are so small that they are hard to see. You will know if your plants have aphids if you see curled, brown leaves. This is because aphids are killing the leaves by sucking the sap.
It is possible to use insecticides to kill aphids. However, there are insects that eat aphids, such as ladybugs, wasps, and spiders. The poison will kill these friendly insects as well as the aphids. The poison can also hurt people and pets. Pets may lick the plants and get poison in their bodies. If you eat fruits and vegetables from your garden, you will get poison in your body.
There are better ways to get rid of aphids. You can plant garlic and catnip. Aphids do not like these plants, so they will move away from them. You can plant dill, which wasps like. More wasps in your yard means fewer aphids. Finally, aphids die when they are knocked off leaves. You can knock them off by spraying your plants with water.

Welcome to the Night
To all of you who crawl and creep, Who buzz and chirp and hoot and peep,Who wake at dusk and throw off sleep: Welcome to the night.
To you who make the forest sing, Who dip and dodge on silent wing,Who flutter, hover, clasp, and cling:Welcome to the night.
Come feel the cool and shadowed breeze, Come smell your way among the trees,Come touch rough bark and lathered leaves:Welcome to the night.
The night’s a sea of dappled dark, The night’s a feast of sound and spark,The night’s a wild, enchanted park. Welcome to the night!

Name: _________________________A Wise LeaderAfter the war, the new nation needed a constitution, or set of laws. A group of wise thinkers met in 1787 to write the Constitution. They knew they needed a leader to help settle arguments. They chose Washington. He helped keep the peace. Also, many Americans supported the Constitution just because Washington did. Thanks in part to him, the Constitution became the law of the and in 1788. It has helped guide our country ever since.
The nation's first presidential election was held in 1789. There was never any doubt that Washington would win. He was so popular, in fact, that no one ran against him. Washington proved to be a good president. He was a smart man, but he knew he did not have all the answers. He asked for advice and tried to choose the best plan.
Washington HonoredWashington died in 1799. Congressman Henry Lee said that Washington was "first in war—first in peace—and first in the hearts of his countrymen." Many Americans agreed with Lee. They believed the country would have been lost without him.
Congress had statues of Washington made. However, a group of citizens thought that was not enough. In 1832, 100 years after Washington's birth, they began work on the Washington Monument. It took over 50 years to finish. Ever since then, people have come to Washington, D.C. to see it. It is a fitting tribute to the "Father of His Country."

“Visiting a Desert”
No two deserts are the same. In some, you can see cacti and trees full of thorns. In others, you can see miles of orange, white, or brown sand dunes. You might spot lizards, snakes, or tiny mice. You could see big sandstone rocks shaped by the wind or deep canyons carved by rivers. In the United States, there are several deserts to visit.
The Sonoran DesertThe Sonoran Desert is in southern Arizona. Here, you can see huge saguaro cacti that
are taller than a two-story building. You need to be careful when you hike in the Sonoran Desert—almost all the plants have spines or stickers. This protects them from being eaten. Many animals also live here, but you will probably not see too many of them. Most hide under rocks or in holes during the hot days. You might see lizards or small desert mice running from rock to rock.
The Great Basin DesertThe Great Basin Desert covers much of Nevada and Utah. It is the largest desert in the United States. You will hike many beautiful canyons and see interesting rock formations in this desert. Many of the rocks are shades of red and orange. This is caused by minerals like iron in the sandstone. Because sandstone is soft, wind and water carve it into interesting shapes over the years. Many animals also live in the Great Basin Desert, but like the Sonoran, you will probably not see too many of them. If you are lucky, you could see hawks flying high. If you are unlucky, you may encounter a rattlesnake.
Be PreparedIf you want to visit a desert, you need to be prepared. All deserts are dry, so you must bring water. Even if it is not too hot out, you will feel thirsty if you are hiking in a desert for very long. You will lose your body’s water to the dry air with every breath you take. You will probably not find any rivers or streams that have water in them. If you do, the water may be full of mud. Take along more water than you think you will need. Also, wear a hat, long sleeves, and pants. You need to protect yourself from the sun and from plants with thorns and stickers. Enjoy your visit!
