2012-2013 FitnessGram Results • 41% of Georgia children are overweight or obese

• Only 19% of Georgia children were able to pass all SHAPE basic fitness tests

• 25% of Georgia children were not able to pass ANY SHAPE basic fitness tests

• There is improvement, but we have work to do!

Objective 1:

Improve Aerobic Capacity Healthy Fitness Zone measure for the Public School K-12 Population by 1% each year beginning with the 2013 data set.

• Aerobic Capacity HFZ measures improve from 64% (2013) to 67% by 2016

• Aerobic Capacity HFZ measures improve from 64% (2013) to 74% by 2023

Sope Creek Elem. School:

Physical Activity Model

1. Regular academic schedule is maintained

• Classroom time is not reduced

• Increased funding is not required

2. Exercises start at 7:15 am as students

arrive

3. Minimal class schedule changes allow for

20 minutes of morning exercise

Georgia SHAPE School Grantees

Purpose: Fund elementary, middle and high schools to develop and/or implement strategies that support increased physical activity and healthy eating in schools. • 38 Schools (Primary, Elementary, Middle and High)

awarded since 2012

• Funding levels: – Planning $3,000 (6 awarded in 2013)

– Implementation $5,000 (14 awarded in 2013)

– 15 additional schools will be awarded in early 2014

• Funded schools have been able to identify and secure additional funding to support their efforts (ie. Fuel Up to Play 60)

• Convened inaugural Shape Technical Assistance (TA) conference in 2013 for Shape School Grantees

• Provided TA to funded schools on strategies for identifying and applying for grants focused on school health and wellness

Accomplishments

Objective 3

• Improve the Georgia Breastfeeding 6th Month Initiation/Duration rate by 55% over 5 years, according to the CDC Breastfeeding Report Card*.

• *CDC data report includes mainly WIC participants, and those served by public health programming

• Breastfeeding Initiation rate improves from 31.8% (2013) to 48% by 2018

Georgia 5-STAR Hospital Initiative

• The Georgia 5-STAR Hospital Initiative was implemented

as a component of Governor Nathan Deal’s Georgia

SHAPE obesity program focused on health, fitness and

nutrition.

• The purpose of the initiative was support hospital

breastfeeding capacity-building. Each hospital will apply

to meet the Baby-Friendly USA national standards and

can earn up 5 stars by meeting the specific criteria.

A total of nine hospitals were funded to increase exclusive rates by

implementing evidence-based maternity care practices. The funded

hospitals were:

• The Medical Center Muscogee County

• Doctors Hospital Muscogee County

• Gwinnett Medical Center Gwinnett County

• The Medical Center of Central Georgia Bibb County

• Wellstar Kennestone Hospital Cobb County

• Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital Dougherty County

• Southeast Georgia Health System Glynn County

• Southern Regional Medical Center and Clayton County

• Tift Regional Medical Center Tift County
