A Warrior’s Joy
Prelude
Opening Song - “Walking Like Giants”
Welcome
Prayer
Song - “America The Beautiful”
*Invocation
We meet in the strong name of our God, We praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
*Litany - Psalm 34:1-8, 18, 22
I will extol the LORD at all times;
His praise will always be on my lips.
I will glory in the LORD;
Let the afflicted hear and rejoice.
Glorify the LORD with me;
Let us exalt his name together.
I sought the LORD, and he answered me;
He delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant;
Their faces are never covered with shame.
This poor man called, and the LORD heard him;
He saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him,
And he delivers them.
Taste and see that the LORD is good;
Blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted
And saves those who are crushed in spirit.
The LORD will rescue his servants;
No one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.
*Prayer of the Day
Lord God, we are prone to wander away from your love. We forget your
blessings and follow our own ways. Our foolishness leads us to trouble. We are
lost without you. Yet, you are perfectly faithful. You are the champion warrior
who fights to rescue us. Please do not give up on us. Forgive us. Hold us close to
your heart. Restore our joy in your love and salvation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Scripture - Romans 5:1-11 1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God
through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this
grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only
so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces
perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not
put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the
Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. 6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still
powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous
person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God
demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved
from God’s wrath through him! 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were
reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been
reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11 Not only is this so, but we also boast in
God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received
reconciliation.
Gospel - John 19:17-30 17 Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is
called Golgotha). 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others - one on each
side and Jesus in the middle. 19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross.
It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the
place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in
Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not
write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.” 22 Pilate
answered, “What I have written, I have written.” 23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus,
they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the
undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to
bottom. 24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get
it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, “They divided my
clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.” So this is what the soldiers did. 25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas,
and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he
loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” 27 and to the
disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. 28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would
be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked
a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his
head and gave up his spirit.

Sermon Text - Zephaniah 3:14-20 14 Sing, Daughter Zion; shout aloud, Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart,
Daughter Jerusalem! 15 The LORD has taken away your punishment, he has turned back
your enemy. The LORD, the King of Israel, is with you; never again will you fear any
harm. 16 On that day they will say to Jerusalem, “Do not fear, Zion; do not let your
hands hang limp. 17 The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He
will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice
over you with singing.” 18 “I will remove from you all who mourn over the loss of your appointed festivals, which
is a burden and reproach for you. 19 At that time I will deal with all who oppressed you.
I will rescue the lame; I will gather the exiles. I will give them praise and honor in every
land where they have suffered shame. 20 At that time I will gather you; at that time I will
bring you home. I will give you honor and praise among all the peoples of the earth
when I restore your fortunes before your very eyes,” says the LORD.
1. Why is Memorial Day an important day in our country?
2. What is the price of sustained freedom for American citizens?
3. Zephaniah refers to God as a “victorious warrior.” How is God a warrior? What
battles has He fought?
4. Can you think of battles in the scriptures where God’s power won the victory?
5. What motivates God to fight on our behalf?
6. How is Jesus a “victorious warrior?”
7. What is the warrior’s greatest joy?
