A WATER SAVING BATHROOM BUYING GUIDE WITH A PURPOSE
SAVE WATER, SAVE LIVES
SAVING WATER
Water is a resource
we tend to take
for granted.
We just turn on the
tap and there it is.
Recent statistics
from the U.S.
Drought Monitor

SAVING WATER
Although close to 70 percent
of the earth’s surface is
covered with water, less
than one percent of it is
available for human use.
Water supplies are finite
and it is critical that we all help
guard this precious resource.
One thing is abundantly clear:
clean water for drinking and
bathing is a very limited
resource. It won’t be around
forever if we continue our
current consumption habits
here on Planet Earth.

An important way to help conserve water is to install toilets,
faucets and showerheads that carry the WaterSense® label.
Sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),
WaterSense is a program designed to give consumers confidence
that water saving products will actually work effectively
and efficiently.
WaterSense-certified bathroom toilets, faucets and showerheads
are certified by independent testing to use at least 20 percent
LESS water than standard models.
This water savings comes without sacrificing solid flushability
and flow rates. These products must meet stringent
high-performance requirements to receive the WaterSense label.
WaterSense® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

SAVING LIVES
While the Western world
grapples with ways to
reduce the amount of water
used in our clean, abundant
and convenient bathrooms,
almost half the people in the world lack
a safe way to go to the bathroom.
www.flushforgood.com 7
SAVING LIVES
American Standard has found a simple way
to address both issues at the same time.
It’s called
Flush for Good.
www.flushforgood.com 8
SAVING LIVES
This initiative was launched
to increase awareness of the
global sanitation crisis and to
stimulate action that protects
the health of all people
through well-engineered
plumbing solutions.
A team of American Standard
engineers conducted field
research in villages located in
the Rajshahi region of
Bangladesh in 2012.
In these rural communities,
water is scarce and there
is no sewer infrastructure.

SAVING LIVES
The Product Innovation Team
observed the widespread
use of non-hygienic, open
pit latrines to defecate.
The latrines, which are about
six to eight feet deep, are
covered with a concrete slab
in which a plastic toilet pan
is encased.
The pans have a large
opening that allows waste
to freely fall into the pit.
People fill a pot, called a
“bodna”, with water and use
this water to “flush” waste into
the uncovered pit.
However, the open pit
increases the spread of
disease through
transmissions from flies and
other insects.

SAVING LIVES
Based on their findings, the American Standard team
invented a cost-effective, hygienic toilet pan called
Indeed, it is the same advanced R&D expertise behind
the American Standard Champion toilet’s top flushing
performance that enabled the successful development
of this new solution for developing countries.
< SaTo (pronounced SAH-toh, derived from “Safe Toilet”).

SAVING LIVES
It uses ingeniously simple mechanical and water seals
to reduce disease transmission by closing off pit
latrines from the open air.
SaTo toilet pans will keep flies out. Plus, they’ll
help reduce the occurrence of odors, thus
improving sanitation and quality of life for users.

Buy a Champion, Be a Champion.
It’s that simple.
For every Champion toilet sold in the U.S. and Canada
in 2013, American Standard will donate one SaTo unit.
These sanitary toilet pans will be distributed
throughout Bangladesh by international development
organizations BRAC USA and WaterAid.
Can a toilet really
be that powerful?
Yes, it can.

BE A WATER-SAVING CHAMPION
An added bonus is that these water saving Champion
toilets will also help improve the water usage situation
right here at home.
A toilet is responsible for the most indoor water
usage in your home, a full 26 percent on average.
Choosing a toilet that uses less water can
significantly impact your home’s water usage.
You’ll take a big bite out of your water bill. And play
an important role in preserving our valuable natural
resource, water.
Each purchase of a Champion toilet helps improve
the safe sanitation crisis around the world.

HIGH EFFICIENCY TOILETS
A standard toilet uses about
1.6 gallons of water per
flush, also referred to as “gpf”.
This 1.6 gallons is the
maximum amount of water
allowable by law for toilets to
consume.
High efficiency toilets, called
HETs for short, use only 1.28
gallons of water per flush.
HETs are WaterSense-labeled
for using only 1.28 gpf, which
is 20 percent less water than
used by standard toilets.
This WaterSense certification
ensures that these toilets not
only conserve water, but
also provide strong flushing
power and high performance.

efficiency toilets, click here.

CHAMPION 4 MAX HET
A popular new HET from American Standard is the Champion 4 MAX.
It uses only 1.28 gpf and is WaterSense-certified.
Plus, this toilet has attained the highest possible rating in the
Maximum Performance (MaP) test, an independent report on
toilet bulk removal performance.
HIGH EFFICIENCY TOILETS
Champion 4 MAX features include:
• EverClean antimicrobial surface
• Easy “No Tools” installation
• PowerWash Rim bowl flushing technology
The Champion 4 MAX can
successfully flush 1,000 grams
(2.2 pounds) of solid waste
without clogging, using just 1.28
gallons of water.
It boasts the industry’s widest flush
valve and siphon trapway, backed
by the longest warranty out there,
to reliably produce a faster, more
powerful, and quieter flush.

DUAL FLUSH TOILETS
Dual flush toilets are another alternative when looking
to conserve water through your toilet choice.
Rather than a flush lever on the toilet side,
there is an actuator button on the toilet top.
The user pushes one side or the other
on the button to activate the proper
amount of water needed to remove
the waste in the bowl.
Dual flush toilets use different amounts
of water for solid or liquid waste.
One part uses
1.6 gpf to flush
solid waste.
The other part uses
1.0 gpf to remove
liquid waste.

Standard H2Option dual flush toilet, click here.

TURN ON THE WATER SAVINGS
Think beyond the toilet when you’re ready to make
water saving upgrades to your bathroom.
Choosing WaterSense-labeled faucets and
showerheads can make a big difference in the
amount of water your household uses.

Faucets
Conventional bathroom faucets typically
use more than 2 gallons of water per
minute (referred to as “gpm”).
WaterSense-certified faucets use
only 1.5 gallons per minute. That is
a 30 percent water savings over
standard bathroom faucets.
Switching to a WaterSense-labeled
bathroom faucet can save a family
of four close to 600 gallons of water
per year.
Plus, these water efficient faucets
are available in a myriad of models
that include widespread, centerset and
single control styles. There is sure to
be one to suit your family’s needs.

Showerheads
When upgrading your
bathroom, select a
WaterSense-certified
showerhead that has
a flow rate of only
1.5 gallons of water
per minute.
You’ll save water, and
money, plus still enjoy
a drenching, energizing
spray.
American Standard offers
FloWise showerheads that
provide an invigorating
shower experience,
along with their water
conservation attributes.
The key to the exclusive FloWise construction is a small
turbine-like mechanism that spins the water stream through
the head to create a powerful, energizing spray.
Plus, FloWise models offer multiple spray patterns
for a personalized shower each and every time.
Click here to view video about
how you can replace an existing
showerhead or handheld shower
with a water-saving FloWise model.

technology works, click here for video.

TURN ON THE WATER SAVINGS
The result feels much the same as a standard 2.5 gallons
per minute showerhead. Yet FloWise uses 40 percent
less water than current code requirements for
showerheads.
Multiply 2.5 gallons by the number of minutes spent in the
shower, times the number of showers per week. You will
see how quickly your water usage adds up, and how
much can be saved by switching to a water saving
showerhead.
