Introduction & Information

Hi! I’m Suzanne Cannon and I’m a calligrapher. Lettering has been my main creative passion from the time I was very young. As an art form, I love the challenges that fine lettering offered me.

My route as a professional calligrapher took a fascinating turn in 2002 when I launched Quietfire Design fine art rubber stamps. I was honored to join Elizabeth Craft Designs as a licensed designer in 2015, launching my die collection – A Way With Words.

I am delighted to bring you 12 projects from my extremely talented and creatively diverse design team who, along with two special guest designers, enrich my life in so many unexpected ways. I thank them for taking this journey with me.

Most of the products used in our projects may be purchased at Elizabeth Craft Designs online store or are available at fine retailers worldwide.

For more projects and ideas using A Way With Words dies visit Elizabeth Craft Designs’ blog and Pinterest pages. We also regularly post projects using A Way With Words dies on Quietfire Creations’ blog, and we have an extensive gallery of projects on our Pinterest board.

Happy creating!Suzanne CannonApril 20, 2016

Instructions:

1. Form a 4 ¼” x 5 ½” tent-fold card base from white cardstock.

2. Cut a panel from white cardstock measuring 4 1/8” by 5 3/8” inches. Die cut A Way With Words - Merci in one corner. Keep all the small pieces from inside the letters and flourishes as they will be required later.

4. Use foam tape to adhere the die cut Merci panel to the front of the card, ensuring that the Shimmer Sheetz shows through the die cut. Tip: Use tiny pieces of foam tape to secure the smaller negative shapes within the M, e, and the swirls of the lettering saved from step 2. It is easy to see where these pieces go within the Shimmer Sheetz word.

5. Use scraps and drop-out pieces from other Shimmer Sheetz projects to create decorative shapes of different sizes (like those from Corners 1 die set and others). Arrange the pieces around Merci and glue in position as shown. Write a message on the inside of the card. It’s white!

Supplies:

Elizabeth Craft Designs Products:

A Way With Words by Suzanne Cannon• Calligraphic Elements • Love

• Clear Double Sided Adhesive 8 ½” x 11”• Silk Microfine Glitter – Ruby• White Soft Finish Cardstock 100lb Other Supplies• Freezer paper• Thin craft foam sheet• Wet glue• Watercolor paint• Paint brush• Craft iron• Heat tool• Craft knife• Copy paper Instructions:

1. Sandwich Clear Double Sided Adhesive between two pieces of White Soft Finish Cardstock. Trim to ATC size, 2 ½ x 3 ½”.

2. Die cut A Way With Words - Calligraphic Elements 1 Heart from freezer paper. When cutting, place the shiny side of the freezer paper face up (facing the cutting edge of the die) and the dull side facing the cutting plate. Did you notice that Robyn flipped the heart? Reversing a Calligraphic Elements die is a fun option.

3. Iron freezer paper die cut onto card, pressing firmly on the craft iron for about 30 seconds. Avoid burning the ATC by placing a piece of copy on top of the freezer paper as you iron. (Freezer paper must be securely in place so no paint can seep beneath.)

4. Use a paintbrush to apply a small amount of water over the freezer paper heart and ATC front. Use the same brush to add some watercolor (red, as shown, or color of choice). Allow to dry.

5. Back craft foam with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape and die cut the word Love two times. (Make sure adhesive is on the BACK.)

6. Remove release sheet from one Love and layer it on top of the second for extra dimension.

7. When the ATC is completely dry, use a heat tool to loosen the freezer paper heart. Use a craft knife if needed to lift it.

8. Remove release sheet from the back of the double-layer Love and place on the ATC.

9. Run a tiny amount of wet glue around the edges of the ATC. Dip into Silk Microfine Glitter. Allow to dry. Polish glitter with a fingertip to bring out the maximum sparkle.

7. Die cut A Way With Words - happy birthday from white card stock and attach to bottom of the purple rectangle, as shown.

8. Create a hydrangea head and leaves using Susan’s Garden Hydrangea die set. Attach at bottom left of the frame. Susan’s video tutorial is available HERE.

9. Use Small Butterfly dies to die cut butterfly (solid silhouette shape) and decorative butterfly (overlay) from Purple Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz. Reminder: A Metal Adaptor Plate is required for die cutting Shimmer Sheetz. Review Els van de Burgt’s YouTube video HERE if you are new to this technique.

10. Attach butterfly overlay to silhouette with tiny slivers of tape.

11. Add three adhesive-backed half-pearls to the upper left corner.

A Way With Words by Suzanne Cannon• Faith

Els van de Burgt Studio• Big Flowers Set 1 • Small Butterfly • Alphabet 2 - Lower Case • Fitted Frames 1 - Lace Rectangles

Susan’s Garden Club• Pan Pastels Kit 1

• Silk Microfine Glitter: Imperial Garnet, Spring Peridot • White Soft Finish Cardstock 100#• Clear Double Sided Adhesive Other Supplies• Craft Foam (any colour)• Low-tack tape (Tack n’ Peel or 3M Scotch Poster Tape)• Acrylic or wood block• Pencil, blending stump, eraser• Half-pearls• Paper glue, Gem glue• Die cutting machine• Heat tool• Clear embossing powder• Clear embossing ink (VersaMark)

Instructions:

1. Form a tent fold card from White Soft Finish Cardstock (folded size 5 ½” x 4 ¼”).

2. Randomly apply PanPastels in Yellow Ochre, Orange, and Permanent Red to the textured side of a piece of Soft Finish Cardstock that is just slightly larger than the card front.

3. Create foam stamps by die cutting A Way With Words - Faith and the smaller flower from Big Flowers Set 1. Cover one side of an acrylic or wood block with low-tack tape to use as a temporary stamp mount. VERY Important: When temporarily mounting the die cut foam word ‘Faith’ remember that it has to be BACKWARD to your eye in order to stamp so it reads correctly (from left to right).

4. Ink the Faith stamp with clear embossing ink, stamp onto the cardstock created in step 2, and while it is still wet add clear embossing powder and heat emboss. Stamp and heat emboss flowers to fill the rest of the sheet.

5. When the embossing has thoroughly cooled, erase the background color. Full color will remain under the embossed areas. Not all color will be lifted by the eraser so the background will not be white. It will remain softly toned with a speckled effect.

6. Apply glue to flower centers, sprinkle with glitter and burnish when the glue has dried.

7. For a 3D look use a pencil to draw dropped shadow lines at one side of the word Faith as shown. Soften the shadow with a pointed paper stump to further the 3D effect.

8. From alcohol ink-altered glossy paper or Shimmer Sheetz, die cut the Fitted Frames – Lace Rectangles. Use the largest frame for the card; set aside all other pieces for future projects. Option: Choose a solid color or patterned paper that compliments the project. (Tip: For speed and ease, back with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet before die cutting!)

9. Add the frame to the background. Trim. Add the panel to the card front. Adhere yellow, white and brown half-pearls to the frame.

10. Die cut lower case letters to spell out ‘have’ ‘in’ and ‘yourself’. Using the project photo as a reference, position the words as shown. Carefully arrange/align the words to your liking before attaching one letter at a time. Tweezers may be helpful.

11. Die cut the butterfly overlay from colorful paper. Adhere to card. (As shown: Watercolor paper altered with ColorBurst powdered pigments.)
