OverviewThis guide has been developed from a document produced by the Education for Practice Institute (EFPI), Charles Sturt University aimed at identifying potential journals for publishing on practice-based education (PBE) and workplace learning projects. The EFPI’s original document has been amended to include journals relevant for publishing on academic leadership and has been put together as a reference for publishing articles related to the ALTC funded project: Building Leadership Capacity for Work Integrated Learning: Developing Fieldwork Coordinators as Academic Leaders. The Project Management Team acknowledges the initial work undertaken by the EFPI.

These journals are predominantly higher education journals. Discipline specific journals that publish PBE related work and on general leadership are not comprehensively listed here.

It provides timely publication of leadership research and applications and has a global reach. It is committed to deploying the resources of a wide range of academic disciplines in the service of educational scholarship, and the Editors welcome articles reporting significant new research as well as contributions of a more analytic or reflective nature. The membership of the editorial board reflects these emphases, which have remained characteristic of the Review since its foundation. All research articles in this journal have undergone rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and review by at least two internationally recognised peers.

Special issues. At least one issue each year may be a "special issue" which focuses on a specific area of educational practice or research. Those interested in preparing such an issue should contact the Special Issues Editor, Leo Goedegebuure.

Length. The length of the manuscript should be around 5,000 - 6,000 words, with an absolute limit of 7,000 words. An abstract of no more than 300 words will need to be provided at submission stage. Authors should place a word count at the end of their manuscript: Please note that this must include all words in the entire submission including the abstract, title, references, and figure legends. Manuscripts which include over 7000 words will be returned to authors.

A substantial part of its contents is concerned with reporting research findings in ways that bring out their relevance to senior managers and policy makers at institutional and national levels, and to

academics who are not necessarily specialists in the academic study of higher education. Higher Education Quarterly also publishes papers that are not based on empirical research but give thoughtful academic analyses of significant policy, management or academic issues.

It is important that authors appreciate the international nature of the readership of Higher Education Quarterly. This has three implications.

First, the paper has to be of interest to a broad readership, which means that (a) the paper draws on international examples, or (b) reports some international comparative research, or (c) if country specific, explains how developments in one country have been informed by international developments, or (d) how developments or research in one country has implications beyond its borders. The aim is to provide readers with information about and lessons from ideas and practices that are transportable from other contexts.

Second, the paper should avoid parochial references or assume that the readership will understand the processes used in a specific institution, or agency or be familiar with the higher education system in a given country. Localised abbreviations or taken-for-granted notions should not be cited without explanation. Some words are ambiguous and should be used with care. 'Faculty' in the UK, for example, is an organisational unit of a university, in the US it means, what in the UK would be called the academic staff. 'School' rarely means a University in the UK, unlike in the US. So it is incumbent on authors to be clear about terminology. Third, the journal rarely publishes case studies of programmes or single institutions.

Papers should be original. If there is an overlap with material published elsewhere, details should be given. Articles would normally be 4000-6000 words and should include an abstract of 100-150 words.

It is aimed at all those concerned with education after

It is "probably the liveliest of the current British journals" in higher education (Michael Shattock, Times Higher Education Supplement.)

World interest:For more than 40 years, numerous institutions in the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, India and elsewhere have discovered the value of Higher Education Review and subscribe to it.

It is one of the '12 English language journals judged by respondents to a recent questionnaire to be helpful to comparative higher education' listed in Comparative Higher Education: Sources of Information by Robert O Berdahl and George Altomare, International Council for Educational Development.

Ranked 11th out of 67 higher education journals on both esteem and quality indicators in a study conducted by the University of Newcastle Australia

Problem based:Higher Education Review is committed to a problem-based epistemology. In all countries there is an urgent need to formulate the problems of post school education, to propose alternative solutions and to test them. The policy and practice of governments and institutions require constant scrutiny. New policies and ideas are needed in all forms of post school education as new challenges arise.
