Letter from the President & Executive Director

It is our pleasure to introduce this year’s Annual Report that features our winning Recreation Support Services. This past year has been fi lled with many challenges given the current economic climate and funding cutbacks, but where there is adversity, there is also the opportunity to be creative, innovative and to provide services in new and exciting ways.

Our Recreation Support Services is a shining example of this. Helping people with intellectual disabilities to live full and meaningful lives is central to The Arc’s mission. Just like you and me, the people supported at The Arc need the opportunity to develop a social network, friendships and hobbies to make their lives complete and worthwhile. Our recreation support services team has forged partnerships with numerous organizations throughout Harford and Cecil Counties, and now boasts a full array of unifi ed sports (people with and without disabilities on the same team) to include softball, basketball, football, bocci, volleyball, soccer and even kayaking! In addition, we have produced numerous budding artists through our Open Air Arts Studio where folks are painting their way through the county at local park settings.

In fact, our Recreation Support Services Team won the “Lightthe Fire Meritorious Award” at The Arc’s statewide conference this year where they were honored for their creativity in planning and implementing support services. The people we support share that they are much happier when they have ways to keep busy, make friends and have fun outside of their workday!

In addition to our Recreation Support Services, our Vocational Services have continued to evolve and expand to include more customized employment opportunities, as well as a brand new microenterprise designed to groom people we support to learn business skills on the job so that one day they may launch their very own businesses. Our Family Support Services team continued to provide vital resources, education and advocacy for parents of children with disabilities, our Treatment Foster Care program continues to grow and expand to include new Foster Families so that we can serve more children, and our Supported Living Team continues to evolve by using innovative and state of the art tools to expand our emphasis on individualized and person centered planning.

We cannot thank you enough for supporting The Arc so that we can continue to make a difference in the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities!

Diverse Explorers Camp - New Adventures & Friendships

Thanks to your support, Luke attended the Diverse Explorers Camp that was offered by Harford Community College in partnership with The Arc’s Recreation Support Services to provide an inclusive and adventurous camp opportunity to children ages 7-14 of all ability levels. Luke and other campers had the choice to participate in diverse sporting activities such as wiffl e ball, swimming, bocce, canoeing, kayaking, row boating, fi shing, hiking, craft activities, as well as opportunities to learn about birding and fi shing. Though Luke was exposed to many new adventures, his favorites were swimming, canoeing, and making butter at Steppingstone Museum. More importantly, the friendships he made will be treasured for life.

“The camp allows students to experience many opportunities while building compassion, understanding, and friendship for all.” - Anne Cerruto, mother of a Diverse Explorers camper

“I’m so grateful to those who made it happen. I hope it continues next year!” - David Murrell, Diverse Explorers camper with a disability ‘09.

Unifi ed Basketball - It’s Not Just Fun and Games

With an outpouring of community support, Harford County began its second year of the Unifi ed Basketball League in January 2009. With nearly 50 people of all abilities participating in 2008, the league grew to about 70 people in 2009.

Coach Donna Gustafsson enlisted the help of her friends, Donna and Erin Flaherty, and all three worked together marvelously to coach the Red Devils. Donna instantly formed a genuine connection with one of her players, Kat, and saw a transformation in her personality while delighting in her team capturing third place!

“Everyone just wants to play on a team of people with blended abilities. They long to be coached and instructed and do their very best every second they are on the court.”

- Coach Donna Gustafsson, ‘09

“I really enjoy playing basketball and learning new things! Getting to meet new people is always fun too!”

- Kat, Unifi ed Basketball Player, ’08-‘09

"The most important thing I got out of playing in the Unifi ed Basketball League was feeling connected to folks that I would never have had the pleasure

of being with if I had not participated.” - Kim Gosnell, Unifi ed Basketball Partner 09

Embracing The Arts in Harford County... Inclusively

Harford County’s arts and cultural community has something for everyone and that is why The Arc’s Recreation Support Services is pleased to participate in what is now a three year partnership with The Harford County Cultural Arts Board.

Joe Brown is an advocate for that partnership. He embraces the arts and is one of several people with intellectual disabilities who receives support services from The Arc. Joe participates in his own art exhibits, travels to galleries and museums, and advocates for the state’s arts funding during the legislative session in Annapolis.

Through your support, seniors with disabilities have been able to join arts classes at local senior centers alongside their peers without disabilities. The socialization, fun, and craft-making that goes on in these classes is what true inclusion is all about!

“We enjoy supporting The Arc and their efforts to create programs that are inclusive. The arts are another way to join people of all abilities together, interpreting what

they see and feel through their artistic creations. We look forward to continuing our partnership through the arts with The Arc, and also to see Joe’s future works of art!”

- Natalie Weeks, Harford County Cultural Arts Board Coordinator
