I think it’s safe to say that usually around this time of year, most of us are

trying our darndest to figure out the best way to stay warm - not so in the 5th

and 6th grade classroom. These students recently took on a STEM activity

from their new science books looking for just the opposite to happen, the

challenge being: How long can you keep an ice-cube from melting?

Students worked with a partner to design and build a prototype of the ideal

environment for keeping an ice-cube frozen – and no, neither ice packs nor

freezers were allowed! From tin foil to cardboard, towels to pillow stuffing,

many materials were tested and tried with alternating degrees of

success. Callie and Grace came out on top as the clear winners by

implementing a feed bag, Styrofoam, and a cut-up drink koozie into their

design. Could a career as a CEO of YETI or Igloo lie in their futures? Only

time will tell!

Music – Mr. Barry

It seems as though I say this every year (and every month), but I cannot believe we

have already hit December. This year has flown by. It seems bizarre to be

rehearsing and working on Christmas music, but here we are…

We are having our Elementary Christmas Program “It’s Christmas, Carol” on

Monday, December 4th at 7:00 pm. We will be featuring all students in grades Pre

K-6. The students have put in A LOT of work and are excited to perform for

you. Students will need to arrive that evening no later than 6:45pm. They will be

asked to dress nicely. Boys – nice pants and a nice shirt (tie optional). Girls – nice

pants and a nice shirt or an appropriate length dress or skirt. Girls may wear their

“Christmas dresses” if they wish. If you have questions, please feel free to contact

me.

Our High School Christmas Concert will be on Monday, December 18th at 7:30

pm. We have been working hard on our music and will be having a fantastic

concert. We look forward to seeing you there.

In October, 5 of our students auditioned for the chance to be a part of the UND

Honor Festival. We will be having (at least) two students participate in the

festival. Lauren Koski will be playing in the Honor Band. Belle Bernhardt will be

singing in the Mixed Honor Choir. Jade Koski was selected as an alternate for the

Honor Band. Congratulations to all who auditioned!

As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. I am

always willing to help in any way I can. Have a wonderful holiday season, and we’ll

see you next year!

Musically yours,

Mr. Ryan Barry

Science Notes

Biology Students have covered cell structure and

function while completing an entire unit.

Topics of cells and energy, growth, and

division are currently being worked on. After

the new year, we will be working on genetics

and evolution. The lab they have enjoyed

watching evolve is the egg osmosis (what a cell

looks like when it takes on salt)!

Physical Science Students are working on states of matter and

atoms while moving onto the periodic table.

Scientific equations are bringing math skills

into our science class time. We will be moving

into solutions, acids, bases, and salts right after

the new year. Their lab time is working in

groups of two with mathematical equations and

brainstorming on concepts of matter.

Earth Science Students have been working in groups of their

choice to complete their write-in books.

Moving faster this 9 weeks, they are working

at completing one of their three write-in books.

They have worked hard on their rock unit

with identification of hardness and types of

sedimentary rocks. This group of students will

continue to complete the entire first book prior

to Christmas break.

Ecology In this class we have completed several sections

on science and environment, tools of

environmental science, and organization of life.

Our discussion include current events around

the world, including local topics in our area. We

will continue to learn more about how

ecosystems work, biomes, and the human

population once the holiday break is complete.

Physiology This group of students have moved from

breaking down the smallest units in the body

to learning about the organ systems, such as

the muscular system, in order to know how the

human body moves. The hands-on labs for this

group will increase as the content will be more

visible to the naked eye.

Chemistry This small group of students is moving quicker

through topics: measurements and calculations,

atoms (the building blocks of matter), and

arrangement of electrons in atoms. We will be

moving onto topics of: periodic law, chemical

bonding, chemical formulas, and compounds.

Right after the Christmas break, we will be

moving into the equations and reactions,

stoichiometry, and states of matter.

Attention: All 7th- 10th grade students/parents Science fair cross-curriculum has been set! See next page for all deadlines...

Library News - Mrs.

Schill

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library A reminder that last year the Wing Library Board

approved a donation to assist in the implementation of

the Dolly Parton Imagination Library in our

district. Families with children ages birth to 5 years will

receive one high quality book per month. The cost of the

program is $25.00 per student. The Wing Library Board has put forth enough funds to host eight

children in our school district. If you have a child age 0-5 years or know of a family in the

district that may want to participate in this program please have them contact Mrs. Schill at the

school or visit this link through the United Way of Bismarck to register a child:

A Short History of the Wing Library Board by Marilyn Ryberg

Wing School Library Fund has been in existence since 1973. At the 1973 All School Reunion

the alumni in attendance made the decision to support the Wing School Library. Over the years

the fund has helped with remodeling of the library, buying books, and updating materials to keep

up with technology both at the elementary and high school levels. Funding that has supported

and will be continued in the future comes from community

contributions and memorials. The Wing School Library

Fund is incorporated within the state of North Dakota as a

non-profit cooperation. Thank you for personal donations,

organizational support systems and for the memorials

received by the Wing Library Fund.

Our library most recently received a donation in memory

of Grandma Betty Smith from the Wolff family. Thank

you for your thoughtful generosity; Grandma Betty

loved to read to students and listen to them read to her!

The Math Track Meet is an annual competition where

students from multiple schools solve math problems and

compete to see who answers the most question correctly.

For both the 9th and 10th grade and 11th and 12th grade

teams, each each school selects a maximum of twelve

total students. On this year's 9th and 10th grade team we

had Haley Vollmer, Hannah Fischer, Abbie Mehlhoff,

Tucker Schiele, and Blake Bernhardt. On the 11th and

12th grade team we had Tara Binstock, Keone Clark,

Abby Sabinash, and Haylee Zoller.

Unfortunately, none of our competitors placed, but

they all performed very well. The 1st place winner from

the 11th and 12th grade teams was Owen Conley, and

the 1st place winner on the 9th and 10th grade teams was

Morgyn Miller. Even though we did not receive any

awards this year, we are all very hopeful and prepared for

next year.

Mr. Barry has put on many concerts at Wing Public School. Some examples are the

Veterans Day concert, Christmas concert, and Spring concert. In the entire school year, he puts on about six concerts. At the Spring Concert, he lets the 6th graders perform with the high school. The reason he does this is to give them a feel for performing with the high school, and to see if they want to be in band or choir. Barry also lets some students perform solos.

To prepare for the concerts, Barry gives the students the pieces that they will be performing at least a month in advance. He works with the students making sure they're ready for the concert. If the students need one-on-one time with Mr. Barry, he lets them sign up for a lesson.

Many students enjoy the concerts, including Tya Schiele, Kennedy Schlafmann, Torin Meier, and Trayton Bauer. Here's what some students said when asked what they like about the concerts and how they prepare:

Schiele said, “I like hearing how the pieces sound after we are done, the final outcome.” She also added, “I don't really prepare except for the usual warm-up.”

Schlafmann said, “I really like the concerts and how people come to our school to watch us sing. I don't usually need to prepare very much.”

Meier said, “The concerts are okay. I like the treats we get at the end, and I usually only prepare with Mr. Barry.”

Bauer said, “I like the songs we sing. I practice a lot.” When Mr. Barry was asked what he liked about the concerts, he said, “I like getting to show

off how much hard work we did and getting to work with the students.” When asked how he prepares, he responded, “I don't know.... Usually a lot of pacing to get the nerves out. Despite how long I've been doing, this I still get nervous.”

Every year Mr. Barry is always positive and optimistic about the concerts. He always helps anyone who needs the help, but also, pushes them to be the greatest they can be. On his wall, there is a quote that says, “The fact that children can make beautiful music is nothing compared to the fact that music can make beautiful children.” This quote will serve as a constant reminder of the passion Mr. Barry has for music and

the hard work and effort that the students dedicate to music they create.
