FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESKHold the Phone: Use of mobile phones in schoolWe recently held the Annual General Meeting for the TAS Parents and Friends Association where we thanked the outgoing Management Committee and welcomed the newly elected office-bearers. The P&F have done an outstanding job raising funds and running events for the benefit of our students. I would like to thank Trish and the outgoing committee for their wonderful contribution. I look forward to working with Sue and the new committee. If you would like to become involved in our terrific, energetic P&F, or one of the campus Parent Community Groups, please contact your Head of Junior School or Ms Sue Wicks for details. It is a great way to become involved in school life and meet other TAS families.

I have been in a conversation with other Principals recently regarding the role of mobile phones in school life. As you are aware, TAS doesn’t allow mobile phones to be used at school without permission and whilst we are aware that some students carry mobile phones with them, they are required to be turned off and unseen during school hours. The main issue, as far as I see it, is the dual role of modern mobile devices – as a possible tool for learning and as a method for sharing social media. Of course, these two roles can overlap at times!

Recent research illustrates the current views. “A study titled “I don’t think I would be where I am right now.” Pupil perspectives on using mobile devices for learning conducted student surveys. The results show that 43 per cent of students attending the school where devices are banned are still using them to help with learning despite the ban. Meanwhile, 74 per cent of students at the school which allow them, use the devices to aid learning. Most respondents in this study say they use their device for Google and calendars during the school day [PSJ: both provided by a laptop]. As for learning at home, most students

also rely on their device.” My view is that the capacity to assist learning of smartphones is also provided by student laptops but without the same level of temptation to misuse social media and the potential risk that allowing phone usage in the classroom can lead to.

Another study, conducted in the US, reveals concerns held by some students about the risks involved with allowing mobile phones to be used freely at school. The research, Hold the phone! High School Students’ Perceptions of Mobile Phone Integration in the Classroom, was published in 2016. “Across the 628 students surveyed, worries range from general distraction (for example, phones ringing during class) to fears about other students using smartphones to cheat, sext and cyberbully.”

Our view is that, unless it emerges that there is a valuable learning function that can be provided by a phone and not a laptop, we will continue with our current policy. Laptops use our wireless network, whilst phones use their own network and thus unmonitored by our digital security platform. It would appear that phones are more prone to be used in instances of cyberbullying than laptops. From a culture and community perspective, I visited a local Cairns school recently and walked through the yard during break time. Most students were engaged with their phones and not the people around them. Whilst using phones can open up new opportunities for conversation and collaboration, it can also negatively impact the development of other, important 21st century social skills.

Community ServiceReport by Brooke Marshall, Year 6, KBJYear 5 and 6 students from TAS Kewarra Beach Junior visit residents at the Kewarra Aged Care facility each week as part of the Middle Years Activities program (our community service elective). We hear the terrific stories of the lives that these elderly men and women have experienced when we visit.

We have taught some residents how to play 4-in-a-Row and Pass the Parcel, and they taught us how to play Bingo. We created a PowerPoint presentation about our school and showed it to our new friends. They were amazed at how different the schools are today, compared to how they were when they were kids.

Each person at Kewarra Aged Care has an interesting story to tell; some were artists and gave us helpful drawing tips. We have an amazing time and cannot wait to visit our friends each week.

Lilia Walsh(Graduated 2017)

Great to see 2017 graduate, Lilia Walsh, featured in QCAA Student Connect (May edition)

With a talent for Maths and Science, Lilia is gravitating towards a career in astrophysics, but she’s keeping her options open by studying a Bachelor of Science / Bachelor of Arts double degree.

Lilia’s advice to Year 12 students: If you see an opportunity, take it – don’t have regrets about missed chances because you were scared of the risks.

Access the article from the QCAA site: https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/downloads/publications/student_connect_may_18.pdf

Great news from "2017 Assessment Highlights", a QCAA publication released to principals yesterday.

15 outstanding pieces of assessment in Year 12, 2017 were selected from across the whole of Queensland, and Trinity Anglican School graduate Sanjana Kumar's English piece was one of them.

Outdoor EducationAll Year 6 classes completed their Outdoor Education Program at Chillagoe together this year. From student feedback it seems that all activities were enjoyed immensely, including learning about Indigenous and European history at visits to the HUB interpretive centre, the smelters and cemetery, learning about cave ecosystems on the national parks cave tour and about astronomy at the observatory. A highlight for all was the time spent adventure caving in Carpentaria cave, where students navigated themselves through many tight squeezes and other challenges.

Our principal Mr Sjogren made the long drive out to visit for a day, and even completed the adventure caving experience, led by caving legend Alan Cummins, whose involvement with TAS has spanned close to four decades.

Students enjoyed the delicious and nutritious food by Juli and Barry Neale of the Camp Oven for the last time, as all senior school programs see students cooking for themselves. Students are now working in class on writing their ballads as an assessment piece, using Chillagoe for inspiration.

With thanks to the wonderful Freeman family from Hartley’s Creek Adventures, we once again used their private property behind the wildlife park to run our Year 7 Outdoor Education Program from.

Student preparations for this program began last term in hospitality classes, where students practiced cooking several of the meals they will cook for themselves on camp. They also learnt how to use a trangia metho stove safely and made a hot chocolate in class. Last week they even baked several snack food items to take with them on camp, including banana bread and a muesli slice.

Thanks for Mr Swanston in particular for his efforts in making sure the Year 7 students were well prepared for their outdoor education experience.

The program itself focuses on teaching outdoor and expedition skills, including packing and fitting a backpack, operating effectively as a group, minimal impact camping practices, setting up and breaking down campsites, bush toileting and hiking skills.

The program also included a significant amount of environmental education, including a visit to the Hartley’s Creek wildlife part, tree planting and learning how Indigenous people lived from and managed the land.

TAS in the NEWSOur staff and students are newsworthy

Our participation in last month’s Stargazing World Record Attempt was featured in the Cairns Post last week, with a great photo of Ashleigh, Luke, Grace and Elle. Teachers Dr Ezard and Mrs Malcolm were also supporting the cause

Mr Paul Sjogren was interviewed, with Luke and Katie for Channel 9 Reporter Isabella Leembruggen, which resulted in a great piece Channel 9 News.

The media were clearly interested in the stargazing event, with Paul also being interviewed by ABC radio (twice) and Channel 7 News. Reports are that he was pleased when it was over and he could go back to being a Principal instead of a media star.

Teddy Bear’s HospitalWhat a treat for our Kindy and Prep students and their teddy bears! Volunteer medical students from James Cook University visited us recently to teach our students about being fit and healthy and about how their friendly doctor can help if they are hurt or unwell. Great to see the teddy bears survived their medical treatments intact and judging by the smiles and happy faces, it would seem that all students from both KBJ and JCU enjoyed the teaching and learning experience!

Rostrum Voice of YouthEllie Maccoll

CongratulationsEllie won the North Queensland finals of the Rostrum Voice of Youth competition. She had to give an 8 minute prepared speech and a 3 minute impromptu speech.

The judges advised that this was apparently the highest standard they have ever seen in the local competition.

Ellie now represents North Queensland and flies down to Brisbane in July for the state finals. The winner goes to National Finals in Perth.

Outdoor Rec CourseUpdateYear 10 Outdoor Recreation course students recently paddled the picturesque Babinda Creek. Several students have been practicing their kayaking skills and four students performed good eskimo rolls on the day, with three also doing hand rolls (without using their paddles). All students enjoyed being in such a wonderful natural environment and sharing the experience with their peers. This group has another paddling day, this time on Copperlode Dam / Lake Morris in a few weeks and then a 4-day paddling expedition at the end of term.

Year 11 Outdoor Recreation course students climbed the 922m high Walsh’s Pyramid a couple of weeks ago in nice but rather warm hiking conditions. All students made it to the top in a little under three hours, enjoyed great views and each other’s company while on top and then took about 90 minutes for the walk down. They are looking forward to their 4-day Hinchinbrook Island hiking expedition at the end of this term.

International Schools Fixtures and Billeting

In July we have a real treat for our students in terms of International School Sport. We have three visiting international school teams coming to play our teams, all in the same two day period. For both the Rugby School from England and Blue Mountain College from New Zealand, it’s the fourth time they have visited our school and we have a special relationship with both of these schools. We also have a visit from Merchant Taylor’s Girls School from England as well. All of the games will be after school, with a boys rugby, girls netball and mixed volleyball game on Wednesday 18 July and then a hockey round robin mini-tournament and another netball game on Thursday 19 July. We will also need to billet 30 girls from the Rugby School on both 18-19 July, so we are looking for families to volunteer to do this please. Our teams for these matches will be arranged later next term, but will most probably be our more senior / experienced players in all of the sports. If your family can look after a couple of these girls from Rugby School can you please email [email protected]. Please contact [email protected] to receive a copy of the draw.
