Mission Statement

Padua Center, sponsored by St. Martin de Porres Parish, is a Christian community-based presence reaching out by empowering people at all stages of life to achieve their maximum potential through education, support, and community involvement.

Vision of Kwanzaa Park

Kwanzaa Park is a one-square mile neighborhood which provides hope and energy to the City of Toledo. It has a vibrant commercial district, well lighted streets, and green space that sustain the park atmosphere. It is known as a safe neighborhood in which all residents take pride in their homes and help others when they are in need.

A Year of Uncertainty, Challenge, and DevelopmentDuring 2017-2018, an ongoing discussion about the future of St. Anthony Church and consequently the future of Padua Center, permeated the planning of programs and activities. Doubt clouded the move to St. Martin de Porres for the summer because of the uncertainty of future of Padua Center building. There was no guarantee from the demolition company. A number of citizens intervened to save St. Anthony Church and Padua Center which is now in the process of rebuilding staff, programs, and repairing the building.

With the planned demolition of St. Anthony Church, Padua Center put the Ujima Urban Agriculture program on hold for the summer. Fear of dust and contaminants in the air, as well as lack of entry into Padua Center due to tool storage led to a general uncertainty about the future of the program. Nevertheless, Roger Whitkum continued the gardening in the Hoop House. Basil, cucumbers, and tomatoes flourished. Pictured on the left are grapes from the vines which create the edible fence entering the parking lot. Sr. Virginia made grape jelly for the “Peaces” of Art celebration.

Padua Center’s Charity Status Update On May 1, 2018, Padua Center received certification by the Secretary of State of Ohio as a Domestic Nonprofit Corporation. As a consequence, application for a Federal 501(c)3 status is in process.

Farewell to Mr. Terry CrosbyAfter six and a half years as Educational Director of at Padua Center, Mr. Terry Crosby decided to resign from his position. During his time at Padua Center, he worked with over 1,000 children. He picked children up from schools, organized after school trips, tutored, coached, and disciplined them. He was integral to all the summer camps-about 30 weeks of camps! Padua Center greatly misses Mr. Crosby and wishes him well in all his future endeavors.

Padua Possibilities - an Alternative to SuspensionThe Padua Possibilities Program works with students from several Toledo Pubic Schools and several private schools. Educational Leader, Ms. Brookelyn Phillips picks up students referred to the program and brings them to Padua Center for about 2.5 hours of education. This training includes a class entitled Peace Education which assists the students in reflecting upon the reason they are at Padua Center, lunch, recess and another hour of educational input. Our statistics verify that the program work! These are the numbers for the 2017-2018 school year:

Total number of children served - 88

Recidivism rate of all children served: 86.5% did not return after the first visit9 % returned once4.5% came three times (The program referred these students for further evaluation)

Emerging Young Ladies UpdateThanks to the generosity of Ms. Mimi Nicholson, Padua Center began the Emerging Young Ladies Program again. Ms. Nicholson was interested in funding a program at Padua Center and decided to give her support to the Emerging Young Ladies. Her generosity allowed us to hire Ms. Chalise Morris as director of the program and to bring in a variety of speakers and activities for the young ladies, grades 5-9. Thanks to Ms. Nicholson and to all our donors who assist in funding our programs.

Christ Child Society Helps Nia After School ProgramFrom the opening of Padua Center, the Christ Child Society has been providing opportunities for children who attend the Padua Programs. Their frequent donations, their support of the “Peaces” of Art fundraiser, the free new coats at the beginning of winter, and the fun parties for the children, make The Christ Child Society special partners! Recently, the Christ Child Society had a Fall party for the children. Here, Jayden is decorating a pumpkin with the assistance of a Christ Child member.

Volunteers Make a BIG Difference!During the 2017-2018 fiscal year, Padua Center received 759 hours of volunteer work. This would calculate to $18,322 if they received payment according to the Independent Sector calculation for volunteer hours for 2018.

Board Member Jonathan Boyle and Duane Buck work on removing the accessible ramp. Staff will reinstall the ramp when Padua Center gets painted.

Board President, Dennis Jarrett and Board Member, Art Jones volunteered to do outside clean up after moving Padua Center activities back to the Nebraska Avenue location.

Carol Jacobs, Renee Bitner and Pam Taite-Trail put some ‘elbow grease’ into cleaning the kitchen after Padua Center Programs moved to St. Martin de Porres for the summer.
