Research in The Netherlands (2011) (bases on the previous one “Motives for Physical Activities Measure” from Ryan et al in 1997 has shown that 5 topics are important: fun, physical effect, appearance, excitement and adventure. They all need to be there in the activity to be able to have a long time duration. In the last few years Kataqua has tried to build up the image of Aquatic Fitness… and it seems to be working out; more and more younger people are more attracted to these waterworkouts… thanks to these things: Before After: Fun: aquatic fitness has always been a social gathering of peer groups and it has never changed at all: socializing is important, but now we also see that is has to be FUN-ctional as wel… with only pleasant classes, you will not survive in longer duration Physical effect: if you want to look good in a bathing suit, you have to work it! When results are shown, people will be more happy to return. (By the way: woman score higher on this! For men physical appearance is not that important… I don’t agree ) Appearance: how ‘old’ does aquafitness looks in most of the pools? It was not attractive at all… now we see a good chance: better and more equipment, music is added, the exercises is not ‘movement therapy’ anymore, but it is more attractive! Excitement: variations in exercises, music, but also repetitions (recognition! “hey, I know this, or I know how to do this”) are important. Knowing the goals of your participants is the key to survive in this topic! Adventure: take them on a journey and show them how motivated you are, how happy you are to see them again, make them part of your class and not only the ‘puppets you play with’…

Before 2000, teachers / sports leaders … tried to make 1 point special and switched from one to another. Nowadays we understand the issue of selling ‘you’ and your class is important… get inside the circle and add all 5 points to make it beautiful!

Aquatic fitness is not ‘grey’: make it attractive NOW!

2. Development of the class

Basics Lower Body:

WALKING: movement has an acceleration down, buoyancy resisted JOGGING: movement is mostly up; buoyancy assisted KICKING: execution in all planes ROCKING: side to side or front back, body weight transfer JUMPING / BOUNCING: two legs or one JUMPING JACKS: abduction & adduction, frontal plane SCISSORS: abduction & adduction, sagittal plane TWIST: trunk-twist or leg-twist

Basic Upper Body:

PUSH & PULL: away and towards the midline of the body OPEN & CLOSE: movement from the shoulder FLEXION & EXTENSION: movement from the elbow CIRCLING: all planes possible, alternating or repetitive UP AND DOWN: towards the waters’ surface and towards pools floor SCOOP & ROLL: movement from the wrist

3. Practical The exercises are not all written out since we want to be as updated as possible. Do not hesitate to contact us for the full outlines of this class! The Playlist also will have the latest songs, so just come and ask for them, or mail us! There is also a possibility that we change the class a little, according to the amount of people we will find in the water and the options that we can offer.

1) Warming up: bounces and kicks in pyramid up and down. 2) Rocking – twist 3) Twist – Rocking 4) Jog – walking 5) Walking – Kicks 6) Kicks – Jacks 7) Jacks – Ski 8) Anchored moves with added fun 9) Abdominals and X-stream 10) Warming down
