of the UK’s largest street event ever! Sea Odyssey Giant Spectacular, a 3 day event in Liverpool, marking the 100th

Following their highly respected work for the La Machine Spider 2008 event in Liverpool City Centre, A1TM were appointed to work closely with Liver-pool City Council to provide the complex traffic management plan for the giant’s visit. The extensive design and planning of the project involved large multi-agency groups in order to cover every aspect of the pre-work. The dynamic nature of the event, as the puppet-like wooden giants moved around the city, re-quired extensive step-by-step TM planning.

The Giant Spectacular Continued from first page... The Little Girl Giant was 9m tall, and her Giant Uncle was 15m tall, and both walked the streets of Liverpool, the Uncle looking for his niece. Having two giants on separate routes made the project highly challenging. The resulting traffic management plan needed to ensure that traffic could move as freely as possible whilst ensuring the safety of the hundreds of thou-sands of spectators. The plan contained over 300 traffic management layout drawings, 4500 cones and 780 signs! Extensive radio communications ensured co-ordinated and responsive traffic management during the event itself, and the ability to react to crowd levels and adjust plans accordingly. 36 TM personnel worked extensively to en-sure time-critical execution of the plan, so that the 3-day event was carried off successfully.

The feedback from the public was fantastic and an independent survey measured the economic benefit to the city of £32m over the 3 days.

“On behalf of Liverpool City Council I would like to thank you so much for your invaluable contribution to the Sea Odyssey event. It was a spectacular three days for Liverpool, evidenced by the huge visitor numbers and worldwide media coverage. I am aware of the amount of effort and hard work that went into the plan-ning and organisation between our teams and all the partners involved which was remarkable and helped to create an unfor-gettable experience. Without the support and co-operation of you and your team this event would not have been as successful as it was. I have received so much positive feedback about how much peo-ple enjoyed the weekend, from both residents and visitors and your team can be proud of their involvement in making it hap-pen. Thank you again, it is very much appreciated and I’m de-lighted that we have delivered another event that enhances our city’s global reputation.”

Ged Fitzgerald, Chief Executive, Liverpool City Council

Giant Facts and Figures

317 traffic management layout drawings were created. Laid end-to-end, these would have stretched the length of a football stadium 3 TIMES!!

4500 cones were used - the equivalent of 81km (50 miles) of

coning on a motorway! 780 signs helped advise, direct and divert vehicles away

from the event, keeping the public safe. A total of 298 roads were closed to allow the Giants' pa-

rades, 23 miles if you add them together. 36 Traffic Management personnel worked on the event. To

give that some perspective, a motorway contraflow takes 8 personnel to implement and manage.

Thousands gathered together through Chorley and West Lancashire to greet the Olympic Torch in its relay through Great Britain.

A1TM worked closely with Chorley Council, West Lancs Borough Council and Lancashire Police through Joint Agency meetings and Safety Advisory Groups. The traffic management objective was to keep roads open as far as was safe to do so and to minimise traffic disruption.

A1 and Lancashire Police developed a plan that included holding traffic whilst the torch passed, and only closing the roads where it was necessary. This enabled the public to enjoy close contact with the relay, whilst maintaining a high level of public safety. The event received a great turnout and a very positive response from the public, who donned their flags and even dressed for the occasion!

Lancashire gives warm welcome to Olympic Torch Relay

“The Olympic Torch Relay events in West Lancashire attracted the largest crowds for single events ever seen in Burscough and Ormskirk. The support and advice leading up to the event and the control on the day provided by A1 Traffic Management was crucial in ensuring the event was planned and operated safely and successfully. Our partners in the Police and Lancashire County Council were extremely impressed by the planning and execu-tion of the event; this is evidence of the successful partnership with A1TM. On behalf of West Lancashire Bor-ough Council and the public who attended the event we would like to thank everyone at A1TM for the support

provide on an inspirational day for the Torch Relay.” John Nelson, Head of Leisure and Cultural Services, West Lancashire Borough Council

"Liverpool Pride has worked with A1TM for three years to help make

the festival and march as fabulous as it is whilst keeping the City moving. A1

consistently deliver under the tight time pressures that come with this

large scale event and are a vital part of it's success. If we're honest - we're

not sure who's more excited about next year's festival!" James Davies,

Festival Coordinator, Liverpool Pride

Third Liverpool Pride attracts 52,000 in a rainbow march and festival of colour

The City of Liverpool’s third Pride festival saw 52,000 people enjoy a fantastic parade and party. The event is held specifically in Au-gust to commemorate the late Michael Causer, whose murder shocked the city in 2008. Spectators lined the streets to watch a 5,000-strong parade make their way through the city followed by a festival spread across 2 city centre event sites, the Pier Head and Stanley Street. A1TM continues to forge a strong relationship with the Pride team, with successful TM planning and delivery, including road closures and diversions on some of Liverpool’s busiest city centre routes.
