The SURCO Training Commercial Management module list

SURCO Training modules are designed to improve the commercial and contractual knowledge and workplace skills of

Civil Engineers, Quantity Surveyors, Commercial Managers, Project Managers and Lawyers working in the civil

engineering industry. Employers promote and provide workplace training primarily to meet business needs, to satisfy

regulatory demands and to allow employees to fulfil the competency and professional development requirements of

    the professional institutions.

The modules (or workshops) can be presented individually but many of them can be combined with others to form

themed training programmes. For example Change and Records (module A7) can be presented in conjunction with

Delay and Disruption (module A8) to form a two day workshop. Themed two day workshops that are team tutored,

such as Indemnity, Insurances and Insurance Claims (based on module B5) can also be arranged.

    Professional or business development

Modules are listed under four categories, core, follow on, optional and advanced. The distinction has been made

on a topic or essential competency basis and does not imply levels of complexity. It is now common practice to train

early career construction and commercial staff in the same skills and many of the core modules are common to

bespoke training schemes focused at immediate post graduate or equivalent levels of knowledge and experience.

Follow on modules are designed for commercial staff and are tutored at post chartership levels although they can be

used to augment the skills of other members of the construction team.

Many of the modules have been designed to promote flexibility. Such modules can be tailored to fit a clients needsfor a specific market sector or to satisfy the professional aspirations of employees on a more general level. For this

reason, it is important that potential clients discuss their needs with SURCO Training as early as possible. Unlike many

other training organisations, SURCO Training can offer the benefit of advice from academics, theorists and, most

importantly, from those with extensive workplace and business experience.

SURCO Training can provide both structured and non-structured training programmes. Structured programmes are

usually delivered in house for employers with sufficient resources on a regular and progressive basis. Typically these

will be major contractors, employers or public authorities operating professional or business related staff development

schemes. Employers with fewer employees are more likely to prefer a non-structured programme delivered on an

open access or public basis at venues arranged by SURCO Training. Such public courses are delivered regularly and

clients book for their people on an ad hoc basis.

    Overseas Training

Civil engineering is a truly global profession and skills taught in one country are very often transferable to another.

SURCO Training regularly delivers structured training for companies based not only in the UK but also, Ireland, other

members of the European Community, South America and South Africa.

In addition SURCO Training has joined with Battersby Kingsfield in Hong Kong, to form and operate a joint venture

company that delivers commercial training using tailored and locally adapted modules in China, the Pacific basin, India

and the UAE. Such workshops are delivered by locally based tutors familiar with local legal systems, customs and

practises. UK companies with interests or long term projects in these regions should contact SURCO Training in the UK

    in the first instance.

    ICES Members

Discounts to the full price of open access or public courses are available to ICES members in the UK and Ireland who

book and attend such courses on an independent basis. ICES members will be expected to comply with all other

    booking and attendance conditions.

    Training Advice

SURCO Training was founded to provide commercial training resources, advice and help for employers of

construction personnel working in the civil engineering industry. Since then it has expanded into the provision of

geospatial training but on a different basis.

Employers provide training primarily to serve and support their business needs. Such needs and competencies aredefined by workplace and market demands, regulatory requirements and the professional institutions.

Typically in larger employers, this training, at early career levels, is structured over a 3 to 5 year period comprising

some 10 to 20 workshops delivered in house over that time. In many cases, employers have remarked that SURCO

Training courses at this level cover the workplace skills that more formal education misses out. As careers move on

and employees become more specialised, further structured training can be provided using Follow on or Advanced

modules. Through its access to tutors who are experts in their own particular commercial field SURCO Training can

also offer training at an expert level on topics such as legal and regulatory requirements and dispute resolution.

For smaller employers such structured training is possible utilising SURCO Trainings open access or public courses

which allow delegates to accumulate CPD certificates to evidence training and to assist them to gain the competency

levels required. For simple guidance, a structured Early Career programme will be appropriate for those working

towards a corporate professional qualification and the Follow on programme for those between membership and

    fellowship levels.

Currently the core modules are deemed to be primarily at levels 4 and 5 of the Framework for Higher Education

Qualifications (FHEQ). However EBTA (the Department of Education and Skills employer based training accreditation

service) has also noted that structured training programmes using the SURCO Training modules have the potential to

be assessed at higher levels (6 and in some cases, 7) of the FHEQ.

Meeting the demand of todays surveying professionals,

SURCO Training is now offering a range of geospatial

engineering training courses run by third party approved

    training partners.

These training partners are The Survey School,

AIT Spatial, and LTU. The courses cover training on

setting out and land surveying, mapping software

    and underground utility surveying.

Full course information can be found in our separate

GE training brochure or on our website at

    www.surco.uk.com/training-geoadvice.php.

Several of the industrys major employers now

    offer commercial internships, modern

apprenticeships or other employment packagesfor non-graduates and school leavers. These are

a rapidly increasing source of future industrial

talent and such packages are frequently

    supported by commercial workshops provided

by SURCO Training either as part of a structured

package or on an introduction to the industry

basis. Some workshops can also be adapted for

delivery at career conventions or within work

    experience or placement schemes.

SURCO Training TutorsWith the exception of the lawyers, all SURCO

Training tutors have worked for a significant part

of their careers as part of the construction team,

usually for contractors. They are closely

associated with the demands of the workplace as

well as the business as a whole and many of them

are recognised experts in their fields.

The Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES) was founded in 1969 to represent the interests

of and set the competence standards for geospatial engineers or commercial managers working in the civil

engineering industry. The Commercial Management discipline includes measurement, project management,

estimating, planning and construction law. Collectively, members are known as civil engineering surveyors.

ICES supports the education and professional development of civil engineering surveyors whether they are

monitoring and setting out the works or working in measurement or Commercial Management roles.

For more information about membership please contact the Institutions membership department on

    0161 972 3100 or go to the Institutions website, www.cices.org .

ICES recognises that training in the workplace is a vital element in reaching the competence levels required by

law to operate successfully within a construction team and to achieve corporate or chartered membership of

an appropriate professional body. Whilst the Institution promotes, assists with and accredits cognate courses

in both Universities and Colleges of Further Education, it focuses particularly on its library of Approved

Development Schemes (ADS). These schemes are agreements between employers and the Institution that

define the training, experience and overall development framework that will be made available by the

employer to allow an individual to progress to corporate membership levels of ICES.

SURCO Training is the training division of SURCO Limited, which is the information business of ICES.

SURCO Training workshops provide an excellent opportunity to expand the knowledge and understanding of

the essential workplace skills of a civil engineering surveyor and to support individuals in attaining the

competence requirements necessary for full corporate membership of the Institution.

The Institution recommends SURCO training modules and workshops to its membership and to the civil

    engineering industry as a whole.
