The cemetery contains the early Hay- wood, Sheppard, Chilton and Bond families. There are probably more, but it’s hard to tell with the shape it is in. The cemetery has gone by different names in the past, originally as Zion Episcopal Church, Christ Episcopal, St. Gregory’s Chapel and Episcopal Church. There may be other versions of the names as well as I gathered information from several sources be- fore coming to this con- clusion. Many of you may re- member several years ago a fourth grade class from Sunny Hill Elementary taking this cemetery on as a project under the direc- tion of Rita Hathcock and Becky Thornton. Becky is a descendant of the ancestors buried there. It had also been visited in July of 1976 by Mary Shaw, Emily Duffey and again Becky Thornton who found it in terrible condition. They reported stones had to be dug up to be read. At that time they reported six stones found. I visited the cemetery with Rita Hathcock in April 2009, and found the same conditions. It doesn’t take long for vegetation to take over a cemetery. Trees fall as re- sults of storms and some- times break the stones or conceal them unless the tree is removed and the stone is dug out. This cemetery needs some attention folks, as the sister of Judge Hay- wood is buried here along with other promi- nent citizens of that time. The dates are very early with two burials record- ed as early as 1836. On my visit, we found nine stones, including footstones, but again, we had to dig some of them out of the ground. I highly suspect none of the stones are in their original location and the cemetery is much larger than it appears. However, this is one cemetery which has sim- ply deteriorated; I saw no signs of vandalism or destruction. Haywood County has several phil- anthropic organizations which might see t to tackle such a project and follow up to see it is pre- served. No doubt some of these organizations have members who are descendents of these ear- ly settlers. Some of the names found in this cemetery are: Rebecca Johnson (Sheppard) (Chilton) (Bond), born 27 May 1812, and died 2 Aug 1849 during childbirth; Henry Johnson Chilton, died 18 Nov 1868; Henry B. Chilton, died 17 Nov 1868 at the age of 19 months; Johnnie (Chil- ton?), died 10 Sep 1836 at the age of 5 years; Mary B. Chilton who died in 1838; William Chilton in- fant son of John & Rebec- ca Chilton, died 10 Sept 1836; Jane Deborah John- son (sister to Judge John Haywood), died 25 July 1836, Egbert Sheppard, died 6 Sep 1874 and Hen- ry Sheppard who died at 17 in 1846. Please mention this to your organization and let’s see if we can get this cemetery cleaned up and kept that way.
