Conference 2017 “A vision for you”

T he literature of Alcoholics

Anonymous is remarkable,

‘Divinely Inspired’ it is said. How extraordinary that a recovering

alcoholic, with support of other

alcoholics, over 80 years ago, wrote a

book nicknamed ‘The Big Book’? This

basic text provides me, another

alcoholic, with a program for recovery, one day at a time. To this day

it remains current and

contains a consistent

message.

As we members of Alcoholics

Anonymous come together to

celebrate service on behalf of

Alcoholics Anonymous, Australia here

at the Conference 2017, it is timely to

reflect on the last chapter in the Big Book titled ‘A Vision for you’ p 151-164.

What message does a ‘Vision for You’

mean to me as I join in this celebration

of service?

The chapter summarizes the previous

pages and outlines again acceptance,

spirituality and recovery. Also weaved

throughout the chapter are references

to the remaining Legacies, Unity and

Service. Put simply, it is in the journey that I place the joy of recovery

and Bill reminds us of our Primary

Purpose ‘stay sober and carry the

message’. This simple message is my

benchmark here at Conference. What

is best for alcoholics, in the rooms and out of the rooms? And

the real bonus is I am in a

place where I feel that

connection with like minded

members. It is truly inspirational, a genuine gift

of sobriety.

Trudge the road……when I first read

this line, being an expert on

everything, my first thought was the word ‘trudge’ was very negative.

However, as I was informed by my

sponsor, over time in recovery I have

come to understand and experience

that life is like that. ‘Trudge’ is a perfect word. For me it describes a

positive in that no matter what, I

continue to move forward.

North Eastern

Region Area C

Delegate John O’L

expands on this

years theme.

Perth 2018 off to a great start magazine. The convention

flyer will be circulated to all CSOs and Intergroup

Offices around Australia later this month and can be downloaded from our

website. Conventions require a lot of funding and members in

Western Region have been busy w i th v a r i ous

fundraising events. As well as our fundraising, we will need contributions from

Groups and members, and if our interstate friends

would like to help it will be g r ea t l y apprec i a t ed . Contributions can be made

directly to the convention bank account: Account Name: 2018 Perth National

Convention of AA, BSB 633 000 ACC 154268007. Or by

cheque to 2018 Perth National Convention of AA, PO Box 680 Armadale

6992. Perhaps the best way for members to help with the funding for the

convention is to register early if you are attending.

‘Early Bird Registrations’, which end December 31st, save you $10 and

guarantee we are able to meet our f inanc ia l

commitments for the event; and early registrations are fully refundable if your

circumstances change before the convention date.

Some members may ask, why hold a National

Convention at all? One reason is that it is a natural thing to do—almost

any association of people

The p r e l i m i n a r y

w o r k a n d planning for the 2018

National Convention in Perth is well underway. The event will be held from

Thursday March 29th to April 2nd 2018, at the Rendezvous Hotel in

Scarborough. This recently-refurbished venue has all

the meeting spaces we require for the convention, with great dining facilities,

both within the hotel and in the surrounding area. The

HPC has negotiated a discount for rooms at the venue, ten-percent off the

rack rate; please quote CONF10 when making your reservation. There is a

r a n g e o f o t h e r accommodation choices

close by. Rendezvous Scarborough is right on the beach and the ‘resort’ feel

of the hotel will provide a great holiday atmosphere; to check out the venue and

the surrounding area, go to o u r w e b s i t e a t

www.aanatcon2018.com.au One of the first priorities for

the HPC was to choose a theme and a logo for the

Convention. The committee invited the Fellowship in Western Region to be

involved in the process of choosing something to reflect both the spiritual

principle of the program and our unique state. After

extensive canvassing the chosen theme will be Just for Today, and the logo

appears here in this

likes to take time out now

and then to reflect on the progress of its own

development. But in AA, such an event is far more than a routine cause for

celebration, the get together sets up an opportunity for being of

service, carrying the message, networking and

sharing. What makes a good convention? It’s probably not the venue,

the theme or the program chosen—though these are

important—but the spirit and feeling behind the event is what matters

most. As one member put it, the AA convention is ‘a darned good AA meeting

blown up big.’ The a t m o s p h e r e o f a

convention is worth the trip; the event is full of fellowship, laughter and

warmth. And if Perth 2018 is going to be your first ever National Convention

and you’re feeling anxious, just remember: ‘there are no strangers in AA, just friends you haven’t met yet’!

t h e Au s t r a l i a n A A Structure.

TOPIC #002/2017 That a Register is created of Australian AA members with fifty years plus of sobriety, which will be held in the Australian AA Archives. The responsibility for the initial gathering of members names for the Register, and the maintenance of the

records thereafter, to be included in the role of the Area Registrar, and that pages 54/55 of the Australian AA Service Manual are updated accordingly.

TOPIC #016/2016 The Board recommends to Conference that clearer guidelines for submission, allocation and rejection of Conference topics be formulated and included in the Composition, Scope and Procedure document of the C o n f e r e n c e A g e n d a Committee. Guideline GL-28 should be referred to.

No topics were allocated to this Committee.

TOPIC #008/2017 That the Advisory Action #020/2014, ‘Conference resolved that Regional PI&CPC, Treatment and Correctional Facilities Co-ordinators be appointed to assist with the work of the National Co-ordinators’, be r e s c i n d e d a n d t h e Fellowship asked if they see the need for these service positions.

TOPIC #015/2017

The Board recommends that Conference considers the viability of having separate National Forums for Treatment Faci l i t ies , Special Needs, Correctional, Public Information, Co-ope ra t i on w i th the Professional Community and Remote Communities, so that there was specific

delegate thus eliminating them from a 4 or 5 year term and possible burn out (1 or 2 years as alternate and 3 years as delegate).

TOPIC #011/2017 That it be written into the Service Manual that the only time an Alternate Delegate can attend Conference in a non-Delegate position, is when the elected Delegate cannot attend. If the Delegate position has been vacated and the Alternate Delegate or anyone else is not willing or unable to take on the position, another person from the Area should be e l e c t e d t o a t t e n d Conference once only. If the Area wishes to send the Alternate Delegate, they will be considered to be the Delegate Elect and have served one year of the Conference agreed three year term.

TOPIC #017/2017 The Board resolved to recommend to Conference that discount on literature to Areas and Districts only be available for PI&CPC initiatives by Areas and Districts. When there is a local Central Service Office, groups should purchase their literature from that

office.

TOPIC #003/2017 The production of 2 new P u b l i c I n f o r m a t i o n pos tcards a imed at attracting young people with drinking problems into recovery in AA. The postcards have 2 separate images. One for male and female. The images used w e r e a c c e p t e d a t Conference in 2015 as PI Posters and are in circulation now. The questions on the reverse of the postcards are off the con fe rence approved teenage brochure currently available at GSO. The postcards are not to replace the current literature but to offer an alternative means of attracting younger people into AA. These postcards are easy to put on coffee tables and doctors waiting rooms and indeed any

professional organization we go to in the course of our normal PI activities. They are also good to have at meetings especially newcomers meetings. The aim is to raise awareness that AA is available to anyone no matter what age and young people can go too.

TOPIC #008/2017

That the Advisory Action #020/2014, ‘Conference

resolved that Regional PI&CPC, Treatment and Correctional Facilities Co-ordinators be appointed to assist with the work of the National Co-ordinators’, be r e s c i n d e d a n d t h e Fellowship asked if they see the need for these service positions.

TOPIC #015/2017

The Board recommends that Conference considers the viability of having separate National Forums for Treatment Faci l i t ies , Special Needs, Correctional, Public Information, Co-o pe r a t i on w i th th e Professional Community and Remote Communities, so that there was specific focus in each of these areas.

TOPIC #012/2017

The General Service Board recommends that the General Service Conference 2017 discusses how Alcoholics Anonymous will remain adequately funded if our society becomes cashless within the next few years, as predicted by financial experts.

TOPIC #017/2017 The Board resolved to recommend to Conference that discount on literature to Areas and Districts only be available for PI&CPC initiatives by Areas and Districts. When there is a local Central Service Office, groups should purchase their literature from that office.

TOPIC #009/2017 That: Each topic for conference should contain a single issue. The desired outcomes are c l a r i t y , u n i t y a n d inclusiveness in the Topic process.

TOPIC #013/2017 The Board recommends to Conference that an agenda and procedures for the Delegates meeting should be produced, so that it is clear that the original intent of this meeting was an induction for new delegates and that it cannot be used as a means to introducing a subject

what their role will be, and hence how they may be expected to participate. In particular this could include explanations of the committee system, the Robert’s rules meeting procedures followed, how the voting system works and the right of a minority voice.

That I can get through anything.

I have witnessed members go

through horrendous experiences e.g. a son dying and they did not

drink. I have been though a

situation which challenged my

sobriety and I didn’t drink. So

‘trudge’ is perfect. Others and I

have also experienced incredible things in sobriety, beyond our

wildest dreams, so ‘trudge’ is

just right.

These last two chapters provide a strong message of recovery,

conditional to my spiritual

condition: Our book is meant to

be suggestive only. We realize we

know only a little. GOD will

constantly disclose more to you and to us. Ask Him in your

morning mediation what you can

do each day for the man who is

still sick. The answers will come,

if your house is in order. But obviously you cannot transmit

something you haven’t got. See

to it that your relationship with

Him is right and great events will

come to pass for you and

countless others. This is the Great Fact for us.

Abandon yourself to GOD as you

understand GOD. Admit your

faults to Him and to your

fellows. Clear away the wreckage of your past. Give freely of what

you find and join us. We shall be

with you in the Fellowship of the

Spirit, and you will surely meet

some of us as you trudge the

road of Happy Destiny. May GOD bless you and keep

you – until then.

How blessed are we, here at

Conference… Bill closes with a Vision for me which is inspiring:

‘Great events will come to pass

for you and countless others’. As

usual Bill places a condition

upon this: ‘See to it that your

relationship with your GOD is right’. And another idea: ‘GOD

will constantly disclose more to

you and to us’.

The East Alligator AA meeting in Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory is an iconic meeting to attend. During the dry season (May to October), it is held in a forest clearing at 5pm on Tuesdays. Head for the Ubirr Border Store near Cahills Crossing of the East Alligator River and look for the two tables on the other side of the carpark. It is walking distance from the Mirl Campground or you can find fancier accommodation in Jabiru about 40km away.
