We are half way through the year and what a half a year ithas been for AABS so far.
We kick started our 2013 events in May with our annualconference, AABS Connect, at HEM Business School inCasablanca, Morocco. We saw over 60 delegates attendfrom across Africa and were wowed by the presentationsof our speakers.Running alongside AABS Connect, we also held ourAABS Research Excellence Workshop. This was the 5thyear we held the workshop and it was a great success tosee all 20 delegates engaged and eager to advance theirresearch skills.
Last month, at our AABS member school, GIBS, we heldthe AABS Teaching the Practice of ManagementWorkshop and AABS Case Writing Workshop. We had agreat turnout at both these events of over 20 faculty.
In this issue of AABS Insight Newsletter, we take a look atthe 2014 AABS events calendar and we highlight andrecognize our members and partners who support us. Thank you for putting the AABS mission at the top of youragenda!

AABS Connect Annual Conference 2013From 13 to 15 May 2013 we hosted our 8th AnnualConference at HEM Business School in Casablanca,Morocco. We were indeed privileged and honoured that AABSConnect: Annual Conference 2013 was hosted by HEMBusiness School, Casablanca, Morocco. This was thefirst time we ventured to the North of Africa to hold ourannual conference.
The theme for AABS Connect 2013 was "BusinessSchools as Generators of African Competitiveness".Addressing the audience, which consisted ofapproximately 60 Deans and Directors from AABSmember schools; non-member schools; business leaders;business partners and sponsors, was a line up of selectedspeakers from business schools and businesses fromaround the world.

The formal business community is willing to invest theR500 billion it has in its collective war chest to kick-startthe National Development Plan (NDP) provided the plancomes with “no U-turns, no shocks and no unpleasantsurprises,” said Business Unity South Africa SpecialPolicy Advisor, Prof Raymond Parsons. He was speakingat a thought leaders’ panel discussion, together with theMinister in the Presidency in charge of the NationalPlanning Commission, Mr Trevor Manuel, and Congressof South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) president, MrSdumo Dlamini. Cosatu is the largest trade unionfederation in South Africa. The UNISA Graduate School of Business Leadership(SBL), together with broadcaster CNBC Africa hosted thepanel discussion on the NDP to highlight the need forleadership in its implementation.

Lagos Business School is Wearing a NewLook
Lagos Business School has a new logo reflecting the newname of its parent university. Pan-African University, ofwhich Lagos Business School is a part, is now known asPan-Atlantic University. Vice-Chancellor, Professor JuanElegido explained that the new name was necessary toavoid confusing it with another institution owned by theAfrican Union (AU).

The Visa Africa IntegrationIndex was developed by DrLyal White and Dr AdrianSaville, in conjunction withVisa sub-Saharan Africa. Theindex aims to measure theextent and nature of sub-Saharan Africa’s economicconnectedness amongst 11key economies across threekey regional clusters.
Their assessment is that thisstudy makes a number ofcontributions to debate andunderstanding by examiningthe influence of cross-borderrelationships; considering thenature of these relationshipsregionally and globally; andhelping to fill adata/information deficit that issubstantial in the case of sub-Saharan economies.

AMI are excited to announce their first AMI 'Learning Lab',in partnership with Kenya's iHub, an open space fortechnologists, investors, tech companies and hackers inNairobi. AMI is partnering with organisations across Africato pilot facilitated versions of our online courses inphysical locations for managers and entrepreneurs whodon't have Internet access, or who would like the supportof peers and a facilitator. The first Learning Lab will bedelivered at the iHub in Nairobi on July 17, and is targetedat entrepreneurs who want to improve their selfmanagement skills.
