FUTURE- PROOFING THE REVENUE CYCLE

UNCATEGORIZED / JULY 29, 2019

Christopher Fisher, maxRTE Business Development Director

An inefficient revenue cycle is tinder for igniting delayed and denied reimbursements and burning a gaping hole in the financial results of a majority of healthcare providers. Left untreated, this sys-temic issue continues to derail cash flow, which could eventually compromise an organization’s ability to provide quality service and outcomes.

Complex payment models confound provider efforts to get billing and coding right. To overcome the challenge, providers should automate key functions that will make the revenue cycle efficient, boost productivity, and foster prompt insurer and patient payments.

Select compatible advanced RCM technology

Providers need to expand their view of technology beyond treatment options and devices. Apply-ing technology to automate revenue cycle management (RCM) lightens administration burden, streamlines workflow, and reduces human error and labor costs.

Choosing the right RCM technology should focus first and foremost on easy integration with the provider’s established workflows and legacy system. Interrupting current workflow is a sure-fire way to sabotage adoption of any new technology and in this case making the revenue cycle more complex.

Front-end improvements reduce back-end challenges

Error prevention is the name of the game for eliminating underpayments, back-end issues, and claim denials. Automation is the best way to address error-prone manual front-end tasks associat-ed with coding and billing that add to employees’ administrative workload.

Automated prior authorizations and benefits verification, registration prior to patient visits, and oth-er front-end tactics will not only significantly improve revenue cycle efficiency, as well as minimize errors. In addition, support for data collection in advance of the patient’s arrival avoids bottlenecks at the check-in desk that contribute to confusion and misinformation about insurance as well as patient dissatisfaction.

Transparency fosters patient confidence, loyalty

Patients are more keenly aware of their healthcare choices than ever before, thanks to the growth of promotion in this increasingly competitive industry. High deductibles have sharpened their sen-sitivity to pricing when selecting where to spend their healthcare dollars.to pricing when selecting where to spend their healthcare dollars. FUTURE- PROOFING THE REVENUE CYCLE

- CONTINUED

As a result, consumers appreciate knowing what their financial responsibility will be before proceed-ing with treatment. Lack of this transparency can cause sticker shock, mistrust, and a greatly de-layed revenue cycle as patients struggle to pay unexpectedly high medical bills. Pre-service discus-sion with patients about their insurance eligibility and benefits, treatment estimates, and their finan-cial responsibility and payment options establishes expectations and a foundation of trust.

Manual must be eliminated for the new healthcare consumerism

Revenue cycles that rely on manual processes are no match for today’s complex healthcare indus-try, let alone its future. It’s clear that competition for valuable services will continue to intensify, and consumers will hold the reins when it comes to making healthcare choices.

Blind acceptance of physician referrals is a thing of the past. Consumers rightfully expect a compre-hensive financial picture before making decisions about providers and services. To accommodate this departure, providers must streamline the front-end of their revenue cycle with a technology that meshes with their workflows and provides the front-desk the information they need to conduct patient discussions before they see the doctor.

maxRTE has been helping healthcare providers shorten the revenue cycle for more than 20 years. With maxRTE, just one click validates plan-specific benefit data such as patient coverage effective dates, co-pays and deductible information. Visit maxrte.com for your free web demo.

We have strong numbers in certification; but our overall chapter numbers in certifica-

tion are down which is surprising considering the industry changes and new technolo-

gy challenges. People do retire or move on to new careers. So our industry is always

looking for new qualified individuals.

Are you affected by the increased use of artificial intelligence? One should consider

learning more about industry changes and future directions we will see in the next

decade. BOTS and other intelligence software is here to stay.

AAHAM education sessions address these changes and technology. Our Corporate

Partners and speakers are sharing great education on current technology, threats,

and opportunities. Certification is a key asset.

Membership for our chapter as of 9/1/19 is 392 members which means we are the

second largest chapter of AAHAM. Maryland is largest chapter with 430 members.

They also are the top chapter is certified members. What can we do to increase our

numbers?

If you need to increase your knowledge levels consider AAHAM as a way to do this.

Your team members will be amazed at what they learn at our webinars, education

days, or multi-day conferences. Certification classes/programs are easy too with on

line classes, in house training, and proctored exams. Email or Call Linda Catino today

AAHAM Certification So many levels – so many opportunities!

AAHAM certification program is known as a method to demonstrate professional achievement and leadership as an individu-

to AAHAM certification. Many are quoted on the AAHAM website under the certification tab.

AAHAM has developed many different levels of certification – it can be confusing for professionals to decide where to begin or

what certification is most appropriate to them at that time. Here is a short description of the levels offered:

Certified Revenue Integrity Professional (CRIP) -

rendered to a patient. (Includes sections charge capture, ancillary services, surgical services, and

recurring clinical services).

Certified (CRCS) Specialist Certification –

for the many details needed to perform their daily jobs (choice of two version- Institutional/hospital/

healthcare or Physician/Clinic) Or Dual Certification can obtained.

Compliance (CCT) Certification-

Tests competencies in healthcare compliance for all staff involved in the processing of patient accounts.

It is intended both to meet the annual compliance training requirement and to support individuals with

professional compliance responsibilities n the hospital or physician setting.
