AERO Project

Began in 1999 as project co-sponsored by NESA and the Office of Overseas Schools

Purpose to develop standards for international schools

Collaborative process involving representatives of 12 schools

Why Standards

• Identify key learning outcomes grades K-12

• Provide foundation upon which to build curriculum

• Increase collaboration among teachers• Increase communication among

students, teachers, and parents

subject across the grades• Tie to schools accreditation

AERO Training

• Over 150 schools and 2000 teachers and administrators have participated in AERO training at conferences, school sites, and the Summer Institute

AERO Standards Review

• In 2009, reviews of original standards documents undertaken to update, revise and improve them

• Expert consultants led the review in each subject, followed by vetting process involving teachers from a variety of international schools

Common Core Initiative

Governors and states commissioners of education began the project in 2009

48 states, plus two territories and the District of Columbia signed on to the project

Experts representing many opinions came together to develop new standards in English and Mathematics

Common Core State Standards

• New standards released in 2010• 46 states and the District of Columbia

have agreed to adopt the Common Core Standards as their new standards

Internationally Benchmarked

•Standards from individual high-performing countries and provinces were used to inform content, structure, and language. Writing teams looked for examples of rigor, coherence, and progression.

College and Career Readiness

• The CCRS are designed to represent a full range of knowledge and skills that students need to succeed in entry-level college courses, as well as in a wide range of majors and careers.

AERO and Common Core

• AERO’s review of Math Standards completed before the publication of the Common Core

• AERO’s experts completed a crosswalk to determine the level of compatibility between the two documents

AERO and the Common Core

• AERO’s English/Language Arts standards review followed the Common Core

• AERO’s new English/Language Arts Framework developed to align with the Common Core Standards

• During school year 2011-2012, the new AERO English/Language Arts Framework was vetted by three groups of teachers/administrators from several international schools

• Cindy Cummings led that vetting process

Implementation and Training

• Since 2010, AERO faculty and staff have trained over 300 teachers and administrators to implement the Math and English Frameworks

Other Developments

• Development of assessments by two groups representing consortia of states; will be released in 2013

• Development of the Next Generation Science Standards
