Meeting
Our experience at Telford this year hasprompted a serious rethink about the wayforward. It was a great pleasure to meetold friends but the finances have tippedthe wrong way. Four years ago, theincome from sales was about four timesthe cost of being there. The difference hasgot less each year and this year theincome was about equal to costs. In otherwords, everything I sold I actually gaveaway. Also, the number of casual saleswas negligible. I have decided that I willno longer attending any of the shows as atrader. My compromised immune systemmake such events risky as well. Wojtekdid go to Cosford this year and hasdecided to have a table at Telford nextyear. Other traders at Telford say theywere all at least 25% down on previousyears and it was noticeably quieter on theSaturday with no crowds.
BUT, all is not lost . We have decided tohave a dedicated 1/200 meet in theAutumn. See the poster on the previouspage for further information. Wojtek,Derek, Paul and I will be there and we hopeto have other 1/200 model and decalsproducers present. We have chosen theMidlands Air Museum at Coventry airportas it is central and has motorways nearbycoming from all directions. If you can getto Telford, getting to MAM is even easier. The timing has been chosen to avoid halfterms (mostly), be before Telford, beforethe clocks go forward and after theautumn holiday season. It will be a realbargain as the £2 entry to the meetingprovides tea, coffee and biscuits ANDentrance to the museum. The museumhas a cafe for more substantial meals. Themuseum opens at 10am and we hope tobe ready by 11am and will go on until 5pm.
The date is Sunday 18th October 2015.
We hope it will be a chance for collectorsto meet each other and chat and you arewelcome to bring your own models todisplay/swop/sell. We hope for a relaxed, leisurely and friendly event. If it is asuccess it could become an annual eventand we might possibly try other venues.
If you are interested in attending, please let meknow. You are not committing yourself, but itwill be helpful in organising the refreshments.
Please feel free to use the previous page as aposter.
Spare parts
When people buy kits from the producers in thisnewsletter we will always try to help if parts arelost or broken but we are getting an increasingnumber of requests for help from people whobuy damaged kits or models from eBay and thelike. When we have the models cast we have acomplete set of parts made and no spares sohelping out often means robbing a kit andmaking it unsaleable. This makes it difficult tohelp people who have not bought from us.Recently it cost one of us over £70 to get 6engines that were needed as the whole mouldof parts had to be spun 6 times to get oneengine from each casting set. I have producedthe packs of props, undercarriages andweapons for such situations. I have very shakyhands (a side effect of medication) and dropeverything many times. I wear a woodworkingapron and fasten the bottom to the workbenchwith bulldog clips. Everything ends up safelyin my lap. Do be careful with eBay. I recentlysaw one of my SR53 kits for sale with a missingundercarriage leg. It was advertised as a rareTamiya kit (!) and went for £25. A new completekit is only £15. I’m waiting for the buyer tocontact me as it was in the original box with mycontact details, or perhaps there are somepuzzled people at Tamiya.
Shed Models and Decals
Firstly, please note the change of emailaddress. [email protected] will stopworking soon so from now on please [email protected] or [email protected].
I am hoping to have a Brabazon availablebefore the end of the year, ideally in time forthe October meeting. This is following anexciting project for Wojtek, using the samepeople to produce it. See Wojtek’s page to seemore about his project.
Decals
Most of the new decals are codes andletters. There is a single sheet of BritishCivil markings and another set of threesheets with a bigger range of sizes. Thereare French Civil markings in black and theshade of blue used by Air France.
There is a set suitable for USAAF, USAF andUS Army aircraft with sheets of white, blackand orange letters, numbers and titles.
Another set covers US Navy and Marineswith sheets of white, black and red letters, numbers and titles.
These will replace the small sheetscurrently available and have a much greaternumber of sizes and titles.
Models
The first three models are the ArmstrongWhitworth Meteor nightfighters NF11/13,NF12 and NF14. The 13 is the tropicalversion of the 11 used in places like Egypt. Each model has decals for a couple ofaircraft.
The Hawker Hunter kit can make severalversions, F6, F6A and FGA9. Decals areprovided for a variety of aircraft includingtwo formation teams.
The Supermarine Walrus and the Hunterwere both worked on by Wojtek and areexceptionally fine kits. The Walrus hasdecals for a couple of colourful civil aircraft,a whale catcher and a Canadian surveyaircraft, and for several military aircraft. There are prewar cruiser based aircraft, anRAF ASR aircraft and a Royal Navy aircraftbased at the delightfully named RNAS Twatt.
The first practical hovercraft ever made wasthe Saunders Roe SR.N1 and the kit is madeso that the major components can bepainted before assembly and a preciselypainted model easily produced.
As far as I can find, no 1/200 model has beenmade of the Skylancer until now. TheSkylancer was a very attractive aircraft thatwould have served the US Navy very well ifselected. The fact that the few aircraftproduced spent their lives working verysuccessfully for NACA and then NASAspeaks volumes. The kit has decals for twocolourful aircraft and a ‘what if’ Navymachine.
Many years ago Tommy did the master for aSea Dart but did not have access to accurateplans so the fuselage was more like a DeltaDart than a Sea Dart. The new kit is not onlyaccurate but can be made with a single skidor twin skids. Decals enable variousschemes to be reproduced.
More Cessna 172s have been produced thanany other aircraft. The kit will make a civilaircraft or a T41 Mescalero military trainer.
The Cessna 337 or O2 also served as a civil ormilitary aircraft with its unusual push/pullpower scheme. Decals are provided for FACaircraft.
The first really practical helicopter was theSikorsky S51/R5 and the kit has decals for twomachines.
Westland built the S51 under license andcalled it the Dragonfly. This kit has decals fora Royal Navy machine and a civil version. TheEvening Standard leased a machine with theunfortunate registration G-ANAL and used itfor various record making flights including thefirst civil helicopter to land in the Orkneys.Wisely, the registration was changed after awhile.
Finally, we have the Short Shetland. Thiswas to be the biggest, fastest, longest rangeBritish flying boat of WWII. Only two werebuilt. The S35 was the military version.During its development its role was changedfrom anti submarine to transport and theturrets were never fitted and the positionsfaired over. It flew camouflaged anduncamouflaged and one photo suggests itflew in Coastal Command colours althoughno record of this can be found. All schemescan be done.
The S40 was the civil version. Dinky brieflyproduced a Shetland model that was no useas toy nor model. Its rarity makes itexpensive so included in the decals is a setof Dinky type markings for those who mightwant a superior alternative.
A laser cut clear stand is available at costprice (£2).
The model is mixed metal and resinbecause of its size.

Shed Decals are laser printed. This means the colours are very accurate, registration isperfect and decals are thin but strong. It also allows shading and graduation of colours. There are two problems, namely that white cannot be printed and colours are not very
opaque. If the decal has straight edges and can be easily cut out accurately then the decalsare printed on white decal paper. If not, we can supply white base decals as listed below.
For a roundel, for example, put the appropriate base decal on first, allow it to dry then applythe top decal. It says which base decals are needed on the list, don’t forget to buy them as
well as the top decal.

Regional Decal SheetsEach sheet is 11”x 8” and contains hundreds of markings in many sizes
The Middle East sheet is from the 6 day war period although only the Egyptian markings changedlater. The North Vietnam markings have been changed very slightly to fit the stars and bars base
decals. It would be unaffordable to do N Vietnam base decals.
Where there are fin flashes or markings these will be included printed on white decal paper andso will need to be cut out very accurately - scalpel and steel rule are ideal. No base decals are
needed for these.
Individual countries are available but the regional sheets are more economical.

Cloudbreak Models Summer 2015
Many people were surprised at the variety and quality of models available in 1:200 at ScaleModel World 2014 and also at the R.A.F. Museum, Cosford. At both Telford and the ShropshireModellers’ show we enjoyed meeting old friends and making new ones. At Cosford we werejoined by Paul Howard of Helmet Models.A new model was unveiled at Cosford, the Grumman Albatross SA - 16A. The model isconstructed of resin with white metal props, engines, engine cowls, floats, underwing fuel tanksand undercarriage. A small nose weight placed in the hull under the wing joint allows themodel to sit on its wheels without a tail strut. (DC please note!)Nick Webb has produced some superb decals for the Albatross. They include USAF Koreanera rescue markings, early USCG (silver) markings, white and orange USCG and Italian AirForce SAR markings.
Nick produces decals mainly for airliners which can be printed in any scale. Do visit his websitefor decals and more at www.classic-airliners.comThe HS Andover C Mk 1 is also available now. Alan Southcombe has done a superb job inconverting one of the HS 748s. It is virtually a new aircraft. The wings, centre section, enginenacelles, fin and rudder props. , tailplane, undercarriage and rear fuselage had to be extensivelymodified. Alan even put in the short fuselage extension forward of the wing leading edge.
We think it is the most accurate Andover kit available in 1:200.
Decal options for the Andover include:1. Original delivery scheme (dark earth/light stone/black ).
2. XS644 - the only aircraft painted in the dark green/dark grey/light aircraft grey scheme. This was after the Andovers were withdrawn from the Middle East.
3. R.A.F. “Transport Command” scheme. (White/light aircraft grey with a blue cheat line.)
4. “UK Open Skies” Andover P.R.1. This was the last Andover in service, in the basic“Transport Command “scheme.
5. R.N.Z.A.F. - All white scheme as used on UN duties.
The E.E. Canberra, previously available only in white metal, has now been recast in resin. The metal model is still available, so you now have the choice. The version recast is the ‘flat nose’. There are five different metal noses which can fitted, allowing most versions to be made, with the exception of the PR 9.The undercarriage, tip tanks, doors and Rushton target winch are the same as those used onthe metal version.
Looking forward to seeing you at our special gathering at Coventry on the 18th October 2015!
Future projects include the SARO S. 45 Princess flying boat. Work is progressing; thebasic hull and tailplane are now finished and wings, engines and floats are well in hand.Make sure you have enough space in your cabinet as the wing span is in excess of 12inches, 334mm approximately!
