PRATARMĖ
Šiandien anglų kalbos mokėjimą darbdaviai įvardija nebe kaip privalumą, pageidavimą, bet
kaip būtinybę. Šiuolaikinis darbas, verslas nebeįsivaizduojamas be bendradarbiavimo su užsienio partneriais,
klientais, kolegomis, todėl siekiant tai daryti sėkmingai, būtinos užsienio kalbų žinios ir užsienio šalies,
kurioje siekiama vystyti verslą, lingvistinės aplinkos išmanymas. Per praėjusį šimtmetį anglų kalba tapo
pasauline lingua franca – t.y. bendra kalba vartojama tarp žmonių, kalbančių skirtingomis kalbomis, po
truputį iš šio statuso išstumdama prancūzų kalbą. Ja vyksta didžioji dalis komunikacijos – rašomi
elektroniniai laiškai, vyksta derybos, pasirašomos sutartys. Be to, anglų kalba – didžiosios dalies
tarptautinių organizacijų kalba. Galimybė komunikuoti verslo anglų kalba yra didelis jaunojo specialisto
pranašumas, siekiant sėkmės šiandieninėje darbo rinkoje.
Straipsnių rinkiniu „Anglų kalba darbui, verslui ir komunikacijai: dabartis ir perspektyvos“
siekiama atskleisti anglų kalbos versle, komunikacijoje, darbe specifiką bei aptarti pagrindines anglų kalbos
tendencijas ir iššūkius, ypatingą dėmesį skiriant profesinei perspektyvai, akcentuoti tarpkultūrinės
kompetencijos svarbą globaliame pasaulyje bei analizuoti viešos kalbos rengimo ypatumus.

Abstract
The article reports the results of the study aimed to investigate and contrast/compare the main differences in the phonetic realisations
of Standard British English (RP) and Standard American English (GenAm). In order to achieve this aim the following objectives
were raised: to analyse the basic inventory of the British Standard English and Standard American English; to compare the actual
phonetic realisations of the British English pronunciation as well as the American English pronunciation, basically concentrating on
D. Cameron’s and B. Obama’s recorded speeches; to analyse the most common sounds that are used in the pronunciation of D.
Cameron and B. Obama and to compare them with the existing models for correct pronunciation, particularly for educated formal
speech used in Great Britain and the United States of America. In the theoretical part, the basic inventory of the British Standard
English (RP) and Standard American English (GA) were analysed and compared. Then, the four speeches were transcribed into texts
for further analysis. Accordingly, B. Obama’s and D. Cameron’s pronunciation peculiarities were discussed and reported. Finally, it
has to be underlined that both representatives have their own manner of pronunciation, i.e. the idiolect.
Key words: pronunciation, variability, regional diversity, British English and American English pronunciation, idiolect.
INTRODUCTION
Pronunciation variability of national and regional varieties in the English language was
analysed by foreign scholars. Snezhina Dimitrova1, Paco G´omez2 explored the differences between
British English (Received Pronunciation) and American English (General American) pronunciation.
Bailey, Richard W. 3 investigated the history of English in the United States and its regional types
(Eastern type, the Southern type, Western or General American). Dr. C. George Boeree 4analysed
the Southern British English phonology. A. Groschel Jr.5 was interested in language variation in
Southern American English; Stephen J. Nagle and Sara L. Sanders 6analysed the phonology of
English in the South, too.
The article concentrates on the British English and American English pronunciation
peculiarities. For this aim four speeches were chosen from the online website called
www.youtube.com. British English correspondence has been selected and analysed by data from the
following source: Prime Minister David Cameron’s speech UK leaves European Union 2016 and
David Cameron's immigration speech in 2014. American English correspondence has been selected
and analysed by data in the following source: The former President Barack Obama’s speech in
Germany 2016 and the outlines of a plan for “Immigration Accountability Executive Actions”
speech in 2014.
The problem statement of the research is that the same sounds of the two different national
varieties, British English (RP) and American English (GA), pronounced differently might reduce
effective communication or even cause a complete miscommunication. It is important to understand
that people who are learning to speak English properly have their own dialect in speaking and
pronouncing words and can make frequent mistakes in pronunciation. The English language has
different dialects with its own pronunciation peculiarities.
The aim of the research is to investigate and contrast/compare the main similarities and
differences between the articulation of the given sounds of British English (RP) and American

English (GenAm) uttered by the two representatives that have acquired and maintained the speech
habits of the particular community they grew up in.
The objectives of the research are:
To analyse the basic inventory and the most typical sounds of the British Standard English
and Standard American English.
To compare the British English pronunciation with the American English pronunciation,
basically concentrating on D. Cameron’s and B. Obama’s recorded speeches.
To look at the personal manner of pronunciation of both representatives of the discussed
varieties of the English language.
The object of the research is the inventory of sounds of British English (RP) and American
English (GenAm) used in the speeches of D. Cameron and B. Obama.
The research methods and procedures are:
Descriptive — scientific literature analysis and review.
Comparative method and analysis — comparison of David Cameron’s and Barack Obama’s
phonetic realizations of sounds compared with the existing and recognized models for
correct, educated formal speech in Great Britain and the USA.
The concept of pronunciation
The term of pronunciation has many definitions. According to AMEP Research Centre7 that
pronunciation is the production of sounds to make a meaning or the act/manner of pronouncing
something.
International Phonetic Association created International Phonetic Alphabet (hence for IPA)
for pedagogical aims. It is a system of phonetic transcription for vocal language and is designed to
represent qualities of speech that are distinctive in oral language: phoneme, intonation, separation of
words and syllables. The IPA is a collection of symbols used for representing the sounds of every
language in the world. This tool can be used for many things: documenting the sounds of an
unknown language; jotting down a client's speech errors; introducing foreign students to the sound
system of languages such as English, which has a complex spelling system, and correcting their
mistakes.
According to Centre for Applied Linguistics and Language Education, there are fifty unique
sounds in English. The sound system of English have about 2/3 consonants (voiced or voiceless
depend on which sound surrounds them) and about 1/3 vowels (short or long).
It is important to remember that segmental and suprasegmental aspects of pronunciation work
in combination when people speak and usually best learned as a solid part of oral language,
segmental aspects of the sound system consist of vowels and consonants.
Consonants are produced when the air stops once or more during the vocalization. It means
that sound is stopped by teeth, tongue, lips and vocal cords. Vowels are produced with the help of
mouth and throat not closing at any point 8(AMEP Research Center, 2002, 3/5). Philip Carr 9,
analysed speaking habits in English. When people speak, they harmonize/ coordinate many of their
movements with the rhythm of what they are saying and that may help to improve a deeper
understanding of stress and rhythm. Non-native speakers should understand and assimilate the
rhythm of English language. If the non-native learners pronounce all words whit the same loudness
or length, their speech will be difficult to understand.
One of the most important and basic suprasegmental aspects of pronunciation is the stress.
The stress refers to the significance given to certain syllables in words, or words in a phrase or a

sentence. AMEP Research Centre (2002) states that the stress is essential at three levels: word level,
sentence level and contrastive stress.
Another important suprasegmental element is an intonation. An intonation in other words is
the change of pitch. It is impossible to realize thoughts and expressions that go with words without
an intonation. The Encyclopaedia Britannica 10 claims that the intonation conveys differences of
expressive meaning (anger, surprise, etc.).
Lynda Yates and Beth Zielinski 11in their researches have suggested, how different level of
pronunciation may cause English learners’ advancement respectively. AMEP Research Centre 12
proves, that “Good pronunciation is over proper grammar - if speaker's pronunciation is not
understood appropriately, he or she might experience social isolation, employment difficulties and
limited opportunities for further study”. On the top of that, “learners with poor pronunciation may
be judged as incompetent, uneducated or lacking in knowledge, even though listeners are only
reacting to their pronunciation” (AMEP Research Centre, 2002). Jeremy Harmer 13 stressed that the
prime goal of pronunciation teaching is intelligibility and that the students should be able to use
pronunciation which is good enough for them to be always understood. Because of a low level of
pronunciation determines a quite negative attitude towards English learner’s intelligence. However,
when it comes to both intelligibility and intelligence, it is worth of mentioning not only ESL
students, but also English native-speakers, using English dialects across the world.
According to the SAUNDZ14, native speakers because of a lack of language competence can
receive incorrect pronunciation. Speakers with strong accent can be hard to understand and social
interaction can be influenced by it.
There are many pronunciation mistakes made by non-native speakers, but it will mention
some noticeable pronunciation mistakes:
The softening of vowels (students tend to soften consonants before front row vowels ([i:],
[i], [e], [æ]) and middle row vowels ([ə:], [ə]) and before consonant.
The hardening of consonants (student tend to harden consonants before back row vowels
and at the end of a word).
The tinning of consonants (e.g. like this- [‘laig ðɪs] instead of [‘laik ðɪs]).
The pronunciation without aspiration or aspiration is not need at all.
The wrong pronunciation of θ and ð consonants and the wrong pronunciation of
consonants before θ and ð.
The wrong pronunciation of ŋ (tend to replace this sound with a /n/).
National varieties of the English language
Generally, a national language may be defined in a few quite similar ways: 1) a language which has
some connection - de facto or de jure - with people and perhaps by extension the territory they
occupy; 2) a language which represents the national identity of a nation or a country; 3) a
designation given to one or more languages spoken as first languages in the territory of a country
(Linguateca, 200715).

In 2015, there were 67 sovereign states and 27 non-sovereign entities where English was an official
language. Many administrative entities announced that the English is at the local or regional level
(OMICS International, 201516). According to Encyclopaedia Britannica17, the English language is
the official language of the USA, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. Today, all nations
that speak English have their own national pronunciation variants (and national standards of
pronunciation). These national standards of pronunciation are associated with television
newsreaders, radio, public figures and etc. As it was mentioned before and often defined by many
authors, for the British English the national standard is RP, for the American English the teaching
norms is GA, for the Australian English it is Educated Australian. Accordingly, there are a number
of peculiar features distinguishing them from other varieties of English.
Variants of the national English language differ in terms of vocabulary, grammar, and
pronunciation. Considering the limits of this this bachelor thesis, the focus will be kept basically on
the latter one. Furthermore, the limited space of this study also reduces our chances to analyse all
the existing regional types of the British Isles and the USA, thus it will be chosen only those most
relevant to the practical part of the study – The British English and the American English. Finally,
the objective criteria for choosing this or that type of pronunciation as the teaching norms are
different but it is accepted that in the British Isles and in the former colonies the teaching norm is
Received Pronunciation (RP). Received Pronunciation is the model to be used in teaching English
as a foreign language in those parts of the world where British is traditionally taught.
Raymond Hickey 18 stated that Standard English (henceforth SE) “refers to whatever form of the
English language is accepted as a national norm in any English speaking country and it
encompasses grammar, vocabulary, spelling and pronunciation”. In the British Isles it is associated
with the Received Pronunciation and United Kingdom Standard English (refers to grammar and
vocabulary), in Scotland the standard is Scottish Standard English. In the United States it is
associated with the General American accent. Unlike the case of other standard languages there is
no official and central regulating body which defines Standard English.
There are several ways in which accents of British English and American English may differ. For
example, they may have different phonemic inventories, may differ in terms of the actual phonetic
realizations of their phonemes in the flow of speech and differences may be in phonotactics. There
are no two people who pronounce exactly alike and this is can be because of locality, early
influences and social surroundings, and there are individual peculiarities too for which is difficult or
impossible to account.
American English (GA/GenAm) pronunciation peculiarities
In the 17th century the process of colonization brought English to the USA and because of
different linguistic evolution, it quickly developed monotony (equability) and normalization with a
unique vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.
In the United States of America and Latin American countries the teaching norm is General
American pronunciation or GA. General American pronunciation used by the majority of the
population of the US. The GA pronunciation noticeable peculiarities:
General American is a rhotic accent. It follows from this then that words like father, mother,
and pleasures are pronounced with an audible /r/ and the tip of the tongue is turned back against

the alveolar. The phoneme /r/ is pronounced before consonant, before and after a vowel (force,
sharp, car, care). Moreover, GA has r-coloured vowels (/ə/ and /3/ in words such as “bird”,
“earn”, “cupboard”, “mother”). There are a few non-rhotic accents (African American
Vernacular English, New York City by working class varieties, Boston and the South among
older gender speakers).
Another noticeable characteristic of American pronunciation is the pronunciation of intervocalic
/t/. It is called flapping. /t/ is articulated as a voiced tap- a rapid articulation of a stop with a
single tongue tip movement. It tends to sound like /d/ in such words as butter, batted, better and
fatter. This quality in GA turns some words into homophones as /d/ also is pronounced in the
same way between vowels spelled with d for example, bidder and bitter, udder and utter, medal
and metal. /t/ is influenced by intonation, position in a word or phrase.
GA speakers in a stressed syllable do not pronounced /j/ after the alveolar consonant /t/, /d/ and
/n/. For example: tune- tu: n, news- nu: z, student- stu: dnt. Also GA pronunciation has the front
open vowel / æ / (class- cl æs, last- l æst, ask- æsk).
To sum up, General American pronunciation is the teaching norm in the USA. The most
noticeable pronunciation peculiarities are: r- fullness, t-flapping and glottalization, /j/ sound
dropped after consonant.
British English (RP) pronunciation peculiarities
The English language history is divided into three periods: Old English, Middle English and
Modern English. The English language has been affected by a majority of other languages (Latin,
France, Greece). The English language is a pluricentric like Chinese, Spanish or German. It means
that there are more variants of Standard English. The English language has eight regional standards
such as Canadian, New Zealand, Australian, South Africa, Caribbean, Indian, American and British.
In Britain there are a number of various local dialects as earlier listed regional varieties. In the
United Kingdom the teaching norm is Received Pronunciation (RP), because it stands for as an
educated speech.
According to the British Library Board (2014) that RP consists of three categories but these
types do not use pronunciation patterns: conservative RP (associated with older speakers),
mainstream RP (describes an accent, which can be considered neutral, according to age, lifestyle of
the speaker) and contemporary RP (features used by the younger RP speakers).
Also Cruttenden 19stated that there are three main types of RP: general RP (reflects neither
a class distinction nor regional variation); refined RP (reflects a class distinction, and it is a type is
relatively homogenous) and regional RP (reflects regional variations).
There are some noticeable peculiarities of Received Pronunciation:
RP pronunciation is a non-rhotic accent. The sound /r/ is pronounced when it goes by a vowel or
is replaced with the sound schwa.
There is no ‘yod-dropping’ after /n, t, d, z/ like in American English, but some British speakers
drop /j/ after /s, l/. /j/ is pronounced in such words as “news”, “stupid”, “student”, “Tuesday”.
Before vowels the plosives /p, t, k/ consonants are aspirated.
RP does not drop the sound h at the beginning of the word (hoarse, head).
The vowel system differs in many ways between GA and RP. In words such as half, bath,
dance, ask are pronounced with /a:/ vowel while in GA – /æ/.
RP has seven short pure vowels, which can be find in GA pronunciation, but GA do not have
short o in such words as lot, not or block. GA pronunciation short o replaced with /a:/ (not, lot).
In RP /t/ is articulated as a voiceless stop.
RP pronunciation has difference between clear and dark l. Clear l appears before vowel (let,
long, last), while dark l appears after vowel (milk, golden, called) or at the end of a word (fall,
all, till).

Idiolect as a speaker’s manner
Some people have their own pronunciation to certain words. This type of pronunciation is
called idiolect.
The International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives20 stated that idiolect is the
individual speech of a member of a language community and those idiolects and dialects speakers
are identifiable by their tone and melody, sounds, words expressions and constructions, by their
grammatical, lexical, stylistic and phonetic features. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica21,
idiolect is the dialect of an individual person at one time. It means that no two persons speak in
exactly the same way and each person’s dialect is constantly undergoing change.
Speaking about idiolect it must be mentioned intra-idiolectical variations. It is variations in
the pronunciation of one and the same speaker, i.e. within one and the same idiolect. There are two
types of intra-idiolectical variations: free variations and those conditioned by different styles of
pronunciation – stylistic variations. Bittner (2016, 11) said “if two sounds that are different from
each other can occur in the same phonological context and one of those sounds may be substituted
for the other, they are said to be in free variation”. While in linguistics free variations are described
as the phenomenon of two or more sounds or forms appearing in the same environment without any
change of meaning and without being considered incorrect by native speakers. Free variation can
appear between allophone and phonemes for example in the word “direct” which transcribed as
/di'rekt/ and /dai 'rekt/ the phoneme /i/ and /ai/ and in the word again /a'gein/, /a'gen/ the vowels /ei/.
Stylistic variations appear because no one speaker will speak in the same manner in all situations.
Stylistic variations are variations in pronunciation due to different styles (SIL International, 200322).
Research: procedure and methodology
This research focuses on the selected speeches of the former prime minister of the United
Kingdom D. Cameron and the president of the United States of America B. Obama. The speeches
were taken from the online website called “www.youtube.com”. All the chosen speeches are of a
political nature as they are given by the high level officials and political leaders of the two
mentioned countries. All four speeches discuss the issues relating to the European Union and
immigration; the speeches are about 3 minutes long.
According to the objectives, about 1700 words were selected for the analysis. All speeches
were listened to many times and transcribed as they was actually uttered /pronounced by D.
Cameron and B. Obama. Each stress was marked in the speeches. Also every word was narrowly
selected and analysed. The most considerably sounds in the two varieties of English were picked
out from the speeches. The standard norms of British English (RP) and American English (GA) are
to be found in pronunciation dictionaries.
It was noticed that when B. Obama is speaking with the black audience he uses African
American Vernacular English and when he is speaking with non-black audience – Standard
American English. Because of it, sometimes the president gets mixed between these varieties of the
English language (it means when he speaks with non-black audience sometimes he involves some
African American Vernacular English pronunciation and vice versa).
In the first speech about the European Union of B. Obama there are 22 cases of pronounced
words that match the Standard American English pronunciation. However, there were 2 words
found matching the Standard British English pronunciation. Also, there were cases of pronunciation
differing both from GenAm as well as RP. This is illustrated in table 1 below.

president of the USA pronounced particular words/sounds comparing his pronunciation peculiarities
with the Standard American English pronunciation.
In the second B. Obama’s speech about the immigration 21 words matched the Standard
American English pronunciation and 4 words matched the Standard British English pronunciation.
Also, there were examples of words that were pronounced differently from the two discussed
standards, i.e. GenAm and RP. This is illustrated in table 2 below.

B. Obama pronounced the words “lowest” and “exploit” with the sounds /i/ in the end of the
word and /e/ at the beginning of the word while the standard pronunciation norm suggests that a
short vowel /i/ is replaced by the sound schwa (GenAm) and the sound /e/ is replaced by the
sound /i/ (GenAm). Moreover, the standard norms of pronunciation give two options how to
pronounce the word “exploit”. The first option matched GenAm and RP, while the second option
of the Received Pronunciation described as not standard but it can be pronounced. Analysing the
word “lowest” the difference between GenAm and RP was noticed, in particular the
pronunciation of the sound /ou/ which is replaced by the sound /əʊ/.
The word “office” was pronounced by B. Obama with a short vowel /o/ in the beginning of
the word as it is used in RP while the same word in the Standard American English is pronounced
with a long vowel /a:/ (/’aːfəs/). Also, in the end of the word the sound /i/ is replaced by the sound
schwa (GenAm).
D. Cameron’s pronunciation peculiarities and comparative analysis
The United Kingdom Prime Minister David William Donald Cameron, a descendant of King
William IV, was born into a wealthy British family in London, England. D. Cameron was educated
at Heatherdown School, Eton College, and Brasenose College, Oxford. D. Cameron stands for the
British English as a representative of the national variety of the English language. The national
variety has its own regional varieties. The regional type that D. Cameron belongs to is the South –
Eastern type based on D. Cameron background.
In the first selected speech there are 12 examples of words matching the Standard British English
norm of pronunciation. However, 6 words obviously matched GA pronunciation norm. In the
second speech about immigration, there were 13 words matching RP pronunciation; the words that
matched the Standard American English pronunciation were not found. The research was aiming at
comparing the cases of pronunciation which differ from the Standard British pronunciation. This is
illustrated in table 3 below.

Table 3. D. Cameron pronunciation peculiarities and similarities compared with RP in the speech about the European Union.
Analysing D. Cameron phonetic realizations it was found that the sound schwa /ə/ is
pronounced in such words as “governed”,”organization” and “government”. The pronunciation
norm of RP suggests that it is possible to pronounce or not to pronounce the sound /ə/ in the same
words as it was mentioned above.
The next paragraph will analyse the words that matched Received Pronunciation in the second
selected speech of D. Cameron. This is illustrated in table 4 below.
Table 4. D. Cameron pronunciation peculiarities and similarities compared with RP in the speech about immigration.
Words such as “term“, “early“, “first“, “persecution“ were pronounced with the sound /ɜ/.
Also, these words are pronounced in the same way in RP while in the Standard American English
they are pronounced with the sound /ɝ/ which means the the sound /r/ is audible. On the other hand,
the word such as “care” was pronounced by D. Cameron with a short vowel /e/ and schwa while
according to the GenAm pronunciation norm the sound schwa can be absent (/ker/), but it is
pronounced by Receiced Pronunciation speakers. Moreover, a short vowel /e/ sounds like /ɛ/.
Then, the sound /ɛ/ has two spellings: consonant – e – consonant spelling and “ea” spelling. 23
In the research there were found six words that matched the General American pronunciation.
This is illustrated in table 5 below.

The comparison analysis between Barack Obama and David Cameron pronunciation
peculiarities
In the theoretical part of the bachelor thesis the regional types of the British Isles and the
United States were analysed and each region was described. For the practical part, the four speeches
of B. Obama and D. Cameron were selected and analysed thoroughly. All speeches are of political
nature; two speeches stands for British English (South - eastern type) while other two stands for
American English (Northern and Western types).
As both David Cameron and Barack Obama spoke about the European Union, there were
some identical words used that were pronounced differently in the selected speeches. This is
illustrated in tables 6,7 below.

To sum up, it can be said that in the Barack Obama’s and David Cameron’s pronunciation, the
most frequent sound in both national varieties of the British English and the American English that
was produced is the sound schwa, /a:/, /o/. However, the sound schwa was pronounced in different
syllables of the words but a final schwa sound is pronounced very weak (in such words as “and”,
“but”, “of”, “for” and etc.) in both national varieties though these national varieties mixed by the
representatives.
Analysing and comparing B. Obama’s and D. Cameron’s pronunciation peculiarities it can be
stated that there are many pronunciation differences between British English and American English.
The second noticeable difference is the sound /r/ production. D. Cameron pronounced it only if it
followed by a vowel while B. Obama pronounced it everywhere. Of course there was exception in
D. Cameron’s pronunciation about the sound /r/ as about the sound /j/. The same can be said about
B. Obama’s African American Vernacular English (absent of the sound /r/), General American (the
pronunciation of the sound /r/) and regional variety.
CONCLUSIONS
Comparing the national variants of the English language, i.e. British English (RP) and
American English (GenAm), it was proved that the regional background of speakers is
undoubtedly reflected in the use of standard and accepted norms of pronunciation. For
example, B. Obama, being the first African American president of the USA, pronounces
the sound combination /ɪn/ instead of the accepted sound combination /ɪŋ/ which is a
typical feature of African American Vernacular English; D.Cameron tends to use a
centralized vowel in words such as ‘’bud’’ and ‘’cud’’ which is a typical feature of the
South – Eastern regional type of English telling about D. Cameron‘s regional
background.
None of the analysed representatives of the national variants of the English language, i.e.
British English (RP) and American English (GenAm), remained exclusively attached to a
single variant of the national language. To illustrate, the word “union” was often
pronounced by D. Cameron with the sound /j/ as in American English (GenAm;) in RP
the same word is pronounced with the sound /ɪ/ instead of /j/. In a number of cases, the
word “office” B. Obama pronounced a short vowel /o/ at the beginning of the word as it
is used in RP while the same word in GenAm is pronounced with a long vowel /a:/
(/’aːfəs/).
Both representatives of the national variants of the English language, i.e. British English
(RP) and American English (GenAm), occasionally demonstrated deviations from the
normativity using some informal words and expressions. D. Cameron tends to pronounce
some words as a one word (e.g. “but on”); B.Obama often uses the informal expression
“wanna” instead of the standardised and accepted expression “want to”.
Both B. Obama as well as D.Cameron has their own manner of pronunciation, i.e. the
idiolect. Generally, D. Cameron speaks quite quickly, although confidently. His voice is
mellow and pleasant. He tends to pronounce some words as a one word, keeps the tone
neutral. B. Obama’s tempo, on the other hand, is rather slow. He makes long pauses
between sentences. The voice can be called as being flat.
The national varieties of English (analysed in the framework of the speeches by B.Obama
and D. Cameron) showed that the accepted norm is not a matter of any political, social or
moral obligation; nor it emerges from formal training; rather it unfolds in the process of
acquiring and maintaining the speech habits of the community speakers grew in.

ASPECTS OF LEGAL TERMINOLOGY TRANSLATION: PHENOMENON
OF NOMINALIZATION Romalda Kasiliauskienė
Marijampole University of Applied Sciences
Abstract
Legal translation is inevitable due to constant migration of individuals and the processes of international economics.
Legal translation belongs to special-purpose translation and requires special abilities of a translator. Some linguists,
such as S.Šarčević (1997) 1
and A. Gléz (2009)2 consider it as the most difficult type of translation. The legal language is
an important means of communication between institutions and individuals. The quality of communication among
individuals and institutions very much depends on the translator‘s competence. The translator‘s communicative
competence involves knowledge and skills in different fields including grammatical, sociolinguistic, discourse, strategic
competences3. In order to avoid some translation difficulties, legal translators need to be familiar with specialized
language and legal processes.
Key words: legal terminology translation, special-purpose translation, nominalization, nominals, legal discourse.
INTRODUCTION
Research relevance and problem. Legal English is highly nominalised. Nominalization can
be defined as a phenomenon in the text and grammatically it possesses the features of nouns and
verbs. Since nominalization is a morphological and textual process, nominals are the consequence
of the nominalization process. Depending on the grammatical properties, nominalizations in English
are divided into two main categories: verb-based and adjective-based nominalizations. This article
focuses on English verb-based nominalizations due to their frequency in the legal English texts.
There is a tendency to use a plenty of nominalizations in legal Lithuanian as well, especially with
suffixes -imas/-ymas and -umas These derived nouns are usually constructed from verbs and called
“verbal nouns”. Since legal Lithuanian includes a great number of abstract words, the process of
nominalization is inevitable. The study of English verb-based nominals in legal discourse has been
thought to be a fruitful area of research from the perspective on translation.
The object of the research - analysis of the English verb-based nominals and their Lituanian
equivalents in legal terminology translation.
The aim of the research - to specify the peculiarities of translating verb-based nominals of
legal discourse from English into Lithuanian.
The objectives of the research:
1. to analize the characteristics of legal texts and their translation issues;
1Šarčević, S. New Approach to Legal Translation. Hague: Kluwer Law International, 2000.
2Gléz, A. Lost in Translation; EU Law and the Official Languages – Problem of the Authentic Text. Bratislava, 2009.

19
2. to reveal the particularities of nominalization and nominals as a significant phenomenon in
legal texts;
3. to find out the frequency of the English verb-based nominals in legal texts and to analyse
their translation strategies.
Research methods: While analyzing legal translation issues descriptive method was applied
to present the theoretical overwiew, contrastive method was used to reveal the peculiarities of
translating legal tems from English into Lithuanian and quantitative analysis of the legal items.
The source of data for this article is the European Union website Eur-lex (www. eur-
lex.europa.eu). This website has been chosen for the analysis of ver-based nominals because of its
convenience to show the bilingual display of legal acts. English legal items have been selected from
the following sources: Council regulations concerning the application of minimum reserves by the
European Central Bank (www.eur-lex.europa.eu); Regulation of the European Central Bank
concerning statistics on the assets and liabilities of investment funds (www.eur-lex.europa.eu);
Explanatory memorandum (www.eur-lex.europa.eu); General terms of sales contracts

have been chosen from Tarybos reglamentas, dėl Europos centrinio banko privalomųjų atsargų
reikalavimo taikymo (www.eur-lex.europa.eu); Europos centrinio banko reglamentas, dėl
investicinių fondų turto ir įsipareigojimų statistikos (www.eur-lex.europa.eu); Aiškinamasis

1. CHARACTERISTICS OF LEGAL TEXTS AND THEIR TRANSLATION ISSUES
Legal translation is a special purpose translation the goal of which is to preserve the
meaning of the source text and lead to the same results in practice. It falls under a specialist
category, technical translation, since it involves the use of a special language (technically speaking
a LSP, language for special purpose) within a technical context, namely the one of law. It is
therefore distinguished both from ordinary language and from special languages of other domains.
Legal translation shares features both with general and technical translation. Legal
translation has a double purpose, we can either have legal translation for normative or descriptive
purposes and this is the consideration from which the entire discourse originates.
The main objective of special purpose text was to transfer the meaning of the source text to
the target text with content prevailing on form, and translation strategies were chosen accordingly.
This was the rule until Vermeer came along, in the 1970s, with his skopos theory.4 According to his theory, when translating a text the first thing to take account of is the
function it has the effect that it is meant to produce on the receiver. Showing that the same text
could be translated differently depending on its communicative aim, he created an alternative to the
meaning-based translation. His departure point was the conviction that the function of the target text
is always different from the one of the source text since the receiver is different.
Legal translation requires both cognitive and communicative approach to the material - the
knowledge of source and target legal systems and the assessment of the recipient and the function of
the target text. According to V. Janulevičienė and S. Rackevičienė (2009) different translation
4 Skopos Theory. In M. Baker, ed. Routledge Encyclopedia of Translation Studies. London: Routledge. 1998. pp.235-
238.
20
strategies should be used for lay readers and for lawyers, as well as for the texts to be used for
information purposes and for the texts to be used as legal documents in the target language5.
To transmit legal information adequately, language of legal translation must be especially
accurate, clear and authentic. The major distinction consists in a special responsibility of legal texts
translators, which is similar to the medical texts translators' responsibility. Any mistake or
inaccuracy in documents can cause serious legal consequences.
In view of the special nature of legal texts, it is agreed that substance must always prevail
over form in legal translation. Nonetheless, the issue of whether authenticated translations should be
literal or free is controversial.
As practice shows, translation techniques and methods often vary from jurisdiction to
jurisdiction, even for the same type of text. In regard to legislative texts, W.E. Weisflog (1997)
argues that authenticated translations must be comprehensible. In his opinion, it is the words that
count in translations of normative texts. Sense is emphasized, maintaining that the translator’s task
is to transfer the sense of the original. Advocating idiomatic translation, he contends that EU
translators are permitted to be creative with language in so-called non-restrictive parts of primary
and secondary EU legislation6.
Translation of legal documents requires certain qualifications – it should be exercised only
by professional translators who have serious operational experience in this sphere or additional
education in the sphere of law. A perfect variant is when a legal text is edited by a professional
lawyer.
Legal translation has special demands on language and style of the statement – the right
style implies the accuracy of wording, logical structure and authenticity of content. Thereby, high
quality translation of documents requires sufficient background legal knowledge and proficiency in
special legal language. In some cases even punctuation marks of the source text have significance in
legal translation.
Serious difficulties in legal documents translation can be caused by professional terms. The
problem is connected with diversity of legal right branches and specificity of terminology in each of
them. Sometimes the same term which has one meaning in the field of civil law, denotes a
completely different concept in maritime law.
Legal documents include: laws, draft legislations, regulatory legal acts, contracts and
collateral agreements, protocols and acts, constituent instrument of organizations, notarial
documents, certificates and others. Therefore, legal translation covers such spheres of law as
constitutional right, administrative law, civil law, economic law, fiscal law, criminal law,
international law.
Legal terms denote the concepts which are created for a particular legal system. Their
creation is based on values and experience of a given nation, so they are closely related to the
culture of the nation. Most of them are to be ascribed to the category of culture-bound terms. Legal
terms are embedded in the documents of the national legal system - the statutes and case law which
shape their meaning and determine their functioning. Legal terms hardly ever contain the same
semantic content in both source and target legal systems. In order to understand a legal concept, the
translator has to analyze the source legal system - the legal setting the concepts are used in their
functions and purposes and relations to each other, etc.
The nature of legal terms make translation researchers reassess the conception of
equivalence in terminology. It is no longer regarded as relationship between identical terms, but as a
continuum ranging form absolute equivalence to indirect relationship between concepts. According

mokslų studijos. 2009. Nr. 4, 357–381 p. 6 Weisflog W.E.‘Problems of Legal Translation‘. International Congress of Comparative Law, Zurich, 1997.
21
to P. Sandrini absolute equivalence is possible only when the terms of different languages refer to
the same concept7.
1. NOMINALIZATION IN ENGLISH AND LITHUANIAN
Nominalizations of verbs are frequent in academic and professional discourse. They are
often used to expand an idea and integrate information laconically8. To put in V.K. Bhatia’s (2008)
terms, nominalizations often refer to abstract concepts and generalizations and can be overused in
formal register, when writers desire to give the text an elevated style9.
In the scientific discourse, nominalization as a process is used to “create technical
taxonomies; it helps the writer to relate one process to another and thus create chains of
reasoning”10. S. Sušinskienė (2009) defines nominalization as a phenomenon in the text.
Nominalization as “a morphologic textual phenomenon” that is, nominalization is presented as a
part of morphology and as a part of a text11.
R. Huddleston and G.K. Pullum (2002) consider nominalization a process of word
formation, which “involves the formation of a noun from bases of other classes, by affixation,
conversion, or phonological modification”12. According to S. Sušinskienė (2009) nominals are
transformed from verbs during the process of nominalization. In the process of nominalization, “the
verb of the underlying proposition is turned into the corresponding nominal form”. Nominalization
is introduced as a text unit (a nominal form) having a grammatical proposition (a verb)13.
A nominal expression in grammar relays a process as an objectified entity. M.R. Lee was the
first linguistic who made an attempt to systematize English nominalizations. According to M.R. Lee
such terms as action nominals, agentive nominals, and abstractive nominals nouns derived form
adjectives and gerundive nominals. Nominalization included not only derived and compound nouns,
but also a variety of dependent structures. (G. Graffi 2001: 364, as cited in M.R. Lee 1960)14.
The functions of nominalizations include cohesion, information economy, and the emphasis
of theme and discourse.
Nominalizations include the following functions:
back grounding of information;
advancement of discourse and reification;
lexical cohesion;
economy, conciseness and packaging of information.

Nominalizations significantly increase the general volume of information in an economical
way and contribute to the logic-semantic cohesion of the text. Nominalization involves verbs and
adjectives. There are two types of nominalization according to I. Bello (2010)15:
Verb-based
Adjective-based
Verb-based nominalizations fall into four types by S. Sušinskienė (2009)16:
activity;
state;
achievement;
accomplishment.
Every type of verb-based nominalizations implies different features. Activity
nominalizations imply process, state nominalizations involve no dynamics, achievement
nominalizations denote the end of a process, and accomplishment nominalizations mean end-point
or result.
The most productive suffixes of English verb-based nominals are: -ation/-ion/-ition/-sion/-
tion/-ution, and less productive suffixes are -th and -ure.
According to R. Huddleston and G.K. Pullum (2002), action and process nominalizations
are represented by the following suffixes:
(a) -al: this suffix is attached to verbs to make nouns; low-productivity;
(b) -ance/-ence: this suffix makes nouns; no longer productive;
(c) -ation/-ion/-ition/-sion/-tion/-ution: usually they are formed form verbs; still productive;
(d) -ing: lexical -ing forms gerundial nouns from verbs; it denotes abstract nouns and
concrete result of a noun;
(e) -ment: it is common with verbs carrying prefixes en-/em-; only marginally productive;
(f) -th: it can be formed from both adjectives and verbs; no longer productive;
(g) -ure: most nouns formed by this suffix are loans; no longer productive17.
Nominalization frequently appears in legal Lithuanian texts and documents, especially with
suffixes -imas/-ymas and -umas according. These derived nouns are usually constructed from verbs
and called “verbal nouns”. Since legal Lithuanian includes a great number of abstract words, the
process of nominalization is inevitable. However, we should take attention that these compoundings
in general and legal Lithuanian, it is recommended to avoid nominalizations where possible.
Artificial formation of nominals with suffixes -imas/-ymas and -umas may lead to ambiguity and
vagueness L. Pečkuvienė18.
The relationship between verbs and nouns is very strong during the process of
nominalization. As V. Ambrazas states derivative nouns or nominals of action or result “retain the
syntactic relationships characteristic of the base verbs”19.
Verbal nouns with the suffix -imas/-ymas are strongly related to the base verb. Verbal nouns
have very strong subject meaning, especially with the initial attributive phrase that occurs in the
genitive case.
Nominalizations can not only denote abstract actions but the result and denote the result of
the action or the object20. Hence the suffixes -imas/-ymas and -umas are most productive suffixes

forming nominals which often denote abstract nouns in legal texts. However, some of them are used
as concrete verbal nouns because they obtained such position due to the frequent use in the legal
texts. Lithuanian legal texts tend to use a great number of abstract words and this influence the
occurrence of nominalizations. Sometimes nominalizations should be replaced by verbs if their
meanings are the same.
3. RESEARCH ANALYSIS
The subject of the research is the translation of English verb-based nominals from English into
Lithuanian. Lithuanian equivalents have been analysed and classified according to their translations.
The analysis of legal items has also been carried out from a quantitative point of view. The results
of quantitative analysis were statistically arranged. In the sources mentioned above, 132 English
verb-based nominals have been found. Selected examples based on their translation strategies have
been grouped. Occurrance results of the research are presented in the table below.
Procedures of translation Frequency of legal items
-al 16 occurences
-ance/-ence 6 occurences
-ure 10 occurences
-ion 50 occurences
-ment 50 occurences
-th 50 occurences
Table 1 Analysis of English verb-based nominals with the suffixes -al, -ance/-ence, -ion, -ment, -ure, and –th.
Quantitive analysis of English verb-based nominals with the suffixes -al, -ance/-ence, -ion, -ment, -
ure, and -th in Table 1 shows the most frequent suffix and less frequent of all verb-based nominals:
the most frequent suffixes are –ment and –ion. There are 50 occurrences of the suffix –ment and the
same amount of the suffix –ion. The verb-based nominal with the suffix –th was not found. The
third frequent suffix is –al (16 occurrences). The data shows that the suffix –ure occurs 10 times.
The total number of English verb-based nominals with the suffixes mentioned above is 132.
24
Figure 1. Distribution of English verb-based nominals with suffixes–al, -ance/-ence, -ion, -ment, -ure and –th by
percentage.
Figure 1 shows the frequency of all suffixes -al, -ance/-ence, -ion, -ment, -ure, and –th by per
centage. The most frequent suffixes are –ment (50%) and –ion (50%) in comparison with the
suffixes -al (12%), -ance/-ence (4,5%), -ure (7,5%), and –th (0%).
Table 2 shows analysis of English verb-based nominals with suffixes –ment,–ion and their
Lithuanian equivalents according to their translation strategies. English verb-based nominals with
the suffixes –ion and –ment and their equivalents are chosen because of their high frequency in
legal texts. Five translation choices such as verb-based nominal with –imas/-ymas, infinitive,
participial structure, other direct equivalent, omission/paraphrase and present tense verb occur in the
analyzed examples. This is illustrated in table 2 below.
Table 2 The frequency of the equivalents of English verb-based nominals with the suffixes –ion and –ment.
The most frequent equivalents are Lithuanian verb-based nominals with the suffix–imas/-ymas.
Among 100 cases there are 54 cases of the Lithuanian verb-based nominals with this suffix. For
example, redemption is translated as išpirkimas, commitments is translated as įsipareigojimai. The
direct equivalents are less frequent (19 cases): 12 equivalents of the verb-based nominals with
suffix –ion (e.g. conditions - sąlygos) and 7 equivalents of the verb-based nominals with the suffix
–ment (e.g. payment- išmokų). The third frequent translation choice is omission or paraphrase. It
occurs 11 times. The participial structures are almost of the same frequency as the infinitives. The
participial structures in translation of the verb-based nominal with the suffix –ion occur in 3 cases,
while the infinitives are used in 2 instances (e.g. reduction - sumažinti). The least frequent
translation strategy is the present tense verb (4 cases).

Comparing the equivalents of verb-based nominals with suffixes –ion and –ment, there is a
tendency to translate them by the Lithuanian verb-based nominal with the suffix –imas/-ymas. So, it
is possible to state that the source texts and the target texts are highly nominal.
As it was mentioned above direct equivalence is less frequent translation strategy than verb-
based nominals with the suffix –imas/-ymas.
Direct equivalents are usually established legal terms. In the examples below (1a,b), (2a,b) verb-
based nominals with suffixes –ion and –ment are translated as legal terms.
(1a) „The written agreement with the depositary.“
(1b) „Sutartis raštu su depozitoriumu.“
(2a) „The budgetary impact of the ELTIF regulation is as indicated in the Legislative
Financial Statement attached to the proposal.“
(2b) „EIIF reglamento poveikis biudžetui nurodytas prie šio pasiūlymo pridedamoje
Finansinėje teisės akto pasiūlymo pažymoje.“
(3a) After acquired the Goods the Buyer, without infringing requirements of legal acts,
including but not limited to legal acts regarding obligation to be granted any kind of
licenses and permits, has a right freely and without any restrictions to dispose the Goods
including but not limited to the right to sell the Goods both in the territory of the Republic of
Lithuania and abroad, also the right to export or re-export it.
(3b) Įsigijęs Prekę, Pirkėjas, nepažeisdamas teisės aktų reikalavimų, įskaitant, be kita ko,
teisės aktus, nustatančius prievolę gauti atitinkamas licencijas ar leidimus, turi teisę laisvai
ir be jokių apribojimų disponuoti Preke, įskaitant, bet nepasiribojant teise parduoti Prekę
tiek Lietuvos Respublikos teritorijoje, tiek už jos ribų, bei teisę ją eksportuoti ar
reeksportuoti.
Other translation strategies of the English verb-based nominals, namely participles,
infinitives, omisions/ paraphrases, and verbs are not so prominent in the translation of the legal text.
CONCLUSIONS
1. Legal translation belongs to special-purpose translation that requires special abilities of a
translator including linguistic competence, translation skills and knowledge of legal systems and
processes.
2. Specialized texts are highly nominalised but legal English takes the biggest part of
nominalizations. The research has revealed that the most frequent English verb-based nominals carry
the suffixes – ion, -ment,-ance/ -ence, -ure, -al, and –th. The most frequent Lithuanian equivalents
are verb-based nominals with the suffix –imas/ - ymas.
3. Besides of verb-based nominals other translation strategies are used: direct equivalents,
infinitives or participles. The paraphrase and omission are the least frequent strategies for the
translation of the English verb-based nominals.

TEISINIŲ TERMINŲ VERTIMO ASPEKTAI: NOMINALIZACIJOS REIŠKINYS
Romalda Kasiliauskienė
Marijampolės kolegija
Santrauka

metodika; psichologiniai veiksniai; teksto kompozicija, organizaciniai gabumai; neverbalinis
poveikis.

Labai
svarbu yra vartoti šias ar kitas priemones, nes jos lyg „įrodymų karalius“ pagyvins, sustiprins
mūsų kalbėjimą, o klausantieji nenuobodžiaus, geriau įsimins.
Dažnai oratoriai pagyvina savo kalbą įvairiais pavyzdžiais. Platonovas teigia, kad
pavyzdys - suprantamiausia viešos kalbos priemonė. Pavyzdžiu gali būti įvairūs svarstymai,
palyginimai. Jis skiria:
Pavyzdys - faktas klausytojo mintis kreipia ne link įvykio, ne link patirties, o link
konkretaus fakto. Tai yra vienas iš įrodymų elementų.
Pavyzdys - sprendimas - seka iš pavyzdžio fakto. Tos rūšies pavyzdžiuose rūšiuojami
tipiniai atvejai, pabrėžiami specifiniai ir bendrieji nagrinėjamo objekto bruožai. Galiausiai
Be to, daugelis žmonių jaučia viešo
kalbėjimo baimę ir norint jiems padėti reikia maksimaliai pagerinti pristatymo kokybę (Godev,
2003). Jau minėto autoriaus Godev (2003) nuomone, viešo kalbėjimo pasiruošimas turi būti
pradedamas nuo aiškių užduoties atlikimo reikalavimų pateikimo. Tai apima aiškų temos
suformulavimą informacijos paieškos šaltinius, auditorijos pagalbą, pasiruošimo proceso
stebėjimą, kalbėjimo organizavimą ir perteikimą, vertinimą.
• Temos suformulavimas.
Po to, kai jau minėtais žaidimais sukuriama atpalaiduojanti aplinka, Pauley siūlo gerinti
studentų kalbėjimą ekspromtu, nes tai padeda vystyti kalbėjimo įgūdžius. Dauguma mano, kad
kalbėjimui ekspromtu negalima pasiruošti, nes daug lengviau kalbėti pagal paruoštą planą. Pauley
darbą ir per abipusį bendravimą su bendraamžiais pasiekti aukštesnį mokymosi lygį (Patri, 2002;
Be to, studentų pastabos gali būti naudingos kuriant viešos kalbos, žodinio pristatymo

sudominti pačiu pristatymu, įgyti daugiau atsakomybės už savo mokymosi procesą (Wenden, 2002;
Otoshi, Heffernen, 2008).
2. Didžiausias studentų sunkumas atliekant žodinį pristatymą yra viešo kalbėjimo grupėje baimė.
3. Viešojo kalbėjimo sunkumus studentams geriausiai padėtų įveikti pristatymo rengimas kartu su
partneriu.
4. Svarbiausia dėstytojo pagalba studentams rengiant viešą kalbą yra tikslūs, išsamiai suformuluoti
užduoties atlikimo reikalavimai.

OVERCOMING DIFFICULTIES IN DEVELOPING PUBLIC SPEAKING SKILLS
Summary
Ilona Kildienė, Eduardas Malevičius
Aleksandras Stulginskis university
The paper focuses on the difficulties named by students in organizing public speaking. Investigation of how to handle
difficulties in developing public speaking skills, conducted at Aleksandras Stulginskis University, has established that students see
the pre-stress and fear of nervousness and failure to speak fluently as major problems in preparation for public speaking. Fear of
public speaking in group is the greatest difficulty named by students when making public speeches. The best way to overcome the
difficulties of public speaking is preparation of the public speech together with partner. This investigation emphasises the
importance of favorable psychological environment in classess and the necessity of clear and specialized definition of requirements
for making public speeches.

KOMUNIKACINIAI ANGLŲ KALBOS MOKYMO/-SI ASPEKTAI
RENGIANT VERSLO ANGLŲ KALBOS SPECIALISTUS Dileta Ravinienė
Marijampolės kolegija
Anotacija
Komunikacijos apibrėžimas bei sąvoka teorinėje literatūroje apima kalbą, gestus, mimiką, judesius ir kitas ekstralingvistines
priemones.
ekstensyvaus skaitymo sąlygų suteikimas bei nefrontalinis mokymo/-si principas. Tai turi vykti
bendraujant bet kuria pasaulio kalba.
Tyrimo problema – būsimų verslo anglų kalbos specialistų komunikacinių įgūdžių ypatumai
bei jų pasireiškimas praktikų metu.
Tyrimo objektas – verslo anglų kalbos studijų srities studentų komunikaciniai įgūdžiai
Marijampolės kolegijoje.
Tyrimo tikslas – išnagrinėti verslo anglų kalbos studentų komunikacinius įgūdžius
Marijampolės kolegijoje.
Tyrimo uždaviniai:
1. Pateikti studentų nuomonę apie studijų bei praktikų metu vyraujančios komunikacijos
ypatumus.

duomenimis)4. Gebėjimas bendrauti laisvai ir nepriekaištingai užsienio kalba tampa vis svarbesniu
faktoriumi profesiniame gyvenime.
Verbalinė, neverbalinė bei simbolinė komunikacija sudaro darbo pagrindą. Tuo metu, kai
neverbalinė komunikacija sudaro 93%, verbalinė – 7%, o simbolinė apima abi ir abiejose vienodai
svarbiai atlieka savo vaidmenį, mes vis dažniau pastebime, jog susiduriame su didėjančiais
nekomunikavimo, arba negebėjimo išreikšti savęs rodikliais. Neverbaline komunikacija mes be
Šiuolaikiniai būsimieji kalbos specialistai mokosi kartodami ir atkartodami bei atpažindami to

bendradarbiavimas tapo labai svarbiu akcentu atliekant praktiką. Ugdant komunikacinius įgūdžius
tapo svarbu pademonstruoti tiek lingvistinius, tiek ekstra-lingvistinius gebėjimus.
6 pav.
