during the journeY to northwest utah, the landscape transforMs identities Multiple tiMes. the Most extreMe shift occurs on the bonneville saltpan. its infinite flatness is interrupted onlY bY the earth’s curvature. the endless horizon is inhabited onlY with silence. a string of posts—an art installation—aMplifies the juxtaposition of horizontalitY and convexitY of the landscape.

the procession below ground separates You froM the horizon, therebY augMenting Your senses. the ceiling apertures afford a hallwaY to the sKY and allow the eleMents to perMeate the space. Monolithic walls provide a radicallY pure environMent, while their shadows and surfaces act as waYfinding devices. deeper within event horizon You feel cool and protected. You find Yourself iMMersed in a MicrocosM of travelers. soMe refuel in a café, while others diverge into peripheral pathwaYs towards lodging. as You eMerge, coolth and warMth Meet as the sKY collides with the earth.
passive strategies:heating | cooling | lighting
the priMarY space is coMpletelY underground while the lodgings are partiallY subMerged into the earth, utilizing bacKfill for therMal Mass. the building’s orientation and apertures allow for daY-lighting while siMultaneouslY funneling the prevailing winds through the Main circulation space.
glazing on each unit is located on the north façade for daY-lighting and view-sheds. the lower portion of the glazing is operable. winch-operated roof panels worK in unison with the glazing for passive cooling.

the birdtower is an exercise in transparencY and structure. its poetics are seen in overall identitY and clear details. the observatorY’s steel structure exudes the experience and interacts with the birds and people aliKe.

niMbus is a revolutionarY step in Modular bridge design. it is coMposed of interchangeable eleMents that allow for ease of construction and unique variation as desired. passive environMental control sYsteMs respond efficientlY to anY urban setting. the etfe cushions and high tech carbon fiber priMarY structure ensure it is lightweight and durable - perfect for citY use. asseMblY is straightforward and requires no special tools. a 3 person teaM can quicKlY asseMble the coMponents; 1 person operating a lift/hoist to bring each coMponent up to the desired height and 2 people to secure the coMponents to each other using onlY wrenches. because the niMbus has nuMerous arrangeMent variations and can grow and contract in length based on its urban setting, it is the perfect solution for building-to-building connection, whether in chicago or toKYo. in addition to providing interconnection, it also serves to engage both the pedestrians that teMporarilY occupY it and street level pedestrians as well. niMbus is More than a bridge, it is an experience.
niMbus[ ] etfeethYlene tetrafluoroethYlene or etfe is a high strength Material resistant to wind, and can withstand large teMperature swings.
environMental sYsteMs suMMer | winter conditions
the etfe allows niMbus to change with the seasons. specific operable pillows allow the teMperature to be regulated. each pillow also has a laYer of fritting which regulates daYlighting .
carbon fiber priMarY structure features a high strength-to-weight ratio.the profile sections are hollow, functioning siMilar to huMan bone structure. orientation of the fibers are MaxiMized to resist live, dead, environMental, static, and dYnaMic loading.

oculus[ ]oculus is located between the sonoran desert research laboratorY and downtown tucson. it bisects the two creating an opportunitY for an urban intervention. the site is within a tod district which is in line with the proposed Modern street car spur line. the stop being adjacent to the site onlY reinforces the necessitY for a dense urban design. this is also reinforced through the zoning and existing infrastructure. the propertY has been prepared for construction reducing the abilitY for on-site response. therefore regional connectivitY through views, solar responsiveness, and nodal creation will fuel design developMent. oculus is a viewing platforM connecting both downtown and a-Mountain.

the chasM[ ]the chasM is a re-iMagination of the courtYard tYpologY seen throughout the universitY of arizona’s caMpus. its purpose is to expose one of the worlds Most iMpressive Mineral exhibits with a vivid experience and processional sequence while partnering with the science of space. MY goal was to investigate coMputational design at building scale through an evolutionarY algorithM that tuned the sKin to self shade while allowing for structure and environMental controls to act as a holistic sYsteM.
