1 6 September 2015 MEMO FOR ALL AAS/SW/ANGEL FLIGHT ALUMNI SUBJECT: First Annual Alumni Update FROM: The Executive Directors Dear Distinguished Alumni, As you know, every year some 1000 members of Arnold Air Society and Silver Wings like you graduate and begin careers in government, industry and the military. Sadly, we have not done a good job of keeping in touch, and we believe we can do better. With this in mind, we offer this first Arnold Air Society, Silver Wings and Angel Flight update letter. Going forward, our plan is to provide updates every year so you may remain "current" on the initiatives, programs and achievements of your great organization. After all, once you are a member...you are always a member...and with the collective achievements of 70 years of your history in the book, we believe you have a right to be very proud! Currently, we are using recent graduates and a few others to help initially distribute this update. Since you have received this letter, you are either one of the initial distribution groups, or you have had it forwarded from another alumni. Either way, we really need your help with reaching as many people as possible. After you review this letter, please forward it to others you know and feel free to post it on Facebook or do anything else you can to help us meet our goal of 1000+ contacts. If you would like to become part our distribution team and also ensure you receive future updates, please send your primary e-mail to [email protected]. Your e-mail will only be used to provide you periodic updates and occasional fund raising information. For further information between updates, please visit your website at: https://www.aas-sw.org. We've also recently established the Arnold Air Society, Silver Wings and Angel Flight Educational Fund (ASEF), with the purpose of directly providing scholarships, internships, fellowships, and other unique educational opportunities to our students. This Fund is recognized by the IRS under 501c3 and allows for tax-deductible contributions to be made to support AAS/SW educational programs. This Educational Fund may be a “game changer” for us going forward, since it has the potential to generate significant financial support through a combination of modest contributions from people like you and through corporate donors over time. We also hope to make ASEF part of the Combined Federal Campaign once we meet entry criteria in 2017. This will allow anyone in federal employment to contribute to making opportunities for the next generation of Arnold Air Society and Silver Wings members even greater than the last. If you are interested in making a donation or wish to sign up for Amazon Smile (no cost donation any time you purchase through Amazon), please see the fact sheet at the end of this letter. Every contribution is appreciated and every nickel will count in the lives of our current membership! We continue to focus on archiving information from your generation of Arnold Air, Silver Wings and Angel Flight, believing that a heritage as powerful as ours deserves a history well preserved. Special credit goes to one of our Trustees, Ms. Monica Browning Mitchell, who has just completed digitizing decades of documents and photos. Currently, we digitize all materials immediately upon creation, eliminating the painstaking process of placing things in digital media after the fact. We consider our archives a real treasure and are always interested in preserving more of our history. If you have photos or documents from your years as an active member of Arnold Air Society, Silver Wings or Angel Flight, please send them to [email protected]. It is important that you include a description of the event or the document and the date so that we can properly catalogue and preserve your history. Please note that the “archives” e-mail address is only periodically checked so it may be a while before we respond, but also know that all input is appreciated.

Circa 1985...then AAS National Commander Col Steve Hiss with Angel Flight “Little General” Kelly and AAS Honorary National Commander Gen (Ret) Russ Dougherty On 1 July 2013, Brigadier General Dick Bundy and his wife Judy retired after ten years of highly distinguished service to AAS/SW as Executive Director and Executive Assistant. Fortunately, General Bundy joined the Board of Trustees after his retirement, allowing our organization to continue to benefit from his leadership. In addition, at about the same time, Maj Gen (Ret) Susan Pamerleau retired as Board Chairwoman, having been part of AAS/SW since she was a student at the University of Wyoming. Susan attended twenty-two National Conclaves throughout her time with us, and she now serves at the Sheriff of Bexar County, which includes San Antonio and surrounding areas. Following General Pamerleau's retirement, General (Ret) Duncan McNabb joined the Board as Chairman. General McNabb's extensive and impressive biography includes well over 5000 military flight hours and numerous command and staff assignments culminating with Commander, US Transportation Command.

Following the Bundy's retirement, I (Brig Gen Dan Woodward (Arnie Alumni)) became the Executive Director and Ms. Marianne Williams (Arnie Alumni) became the Executive Assistant. With the great support of the Air Force Association, we established an office at AFA National Headquarters in Arlington Virginia, which helped strengthen coordination between our two organizations. In our view, our partnership has never been stronger. At the same time, we began integration of an on-line membership management and website platform called Digital Cheetah, which allows all members to register and to purchase equipment electronically. Although the platform is not without challenges, it has eliminated virtually all requirements to process checks and registrations manually, simplifying many management aspects. The system became fully operational on 1 September 2013 and remains in service today. Key to everything mentioned above and everything that follows, are our National Administrative Consultant (NACs) and our Trustee teams. We mention them by name below because many of you know them, and because without their volunteer spirit, thoughtful advice and ceaseless energy, AAS/SW would only be a shell of what it is. They include both SW and AAS members and we are grateful for what they do for us. They are: Capt Nate Amsden Gen (Ret) Duncan McNabb (Chairman) Ms. Crystal Arnote Maj Gen (Ret) Jay Barry Mr. Jason Baseil Brig Gen (Ret) Dick Bundy Ms. "Shiki" Das Col (Ret) Gary Copsey Ms. Molly Davis Ms. Nikki Camhout Maj Tyler Johnson Dr. Bonnie Dunbar Lt Gabbe Kearney (formerly Wilson) Maj Gen (Ret) Steve Lepper Lt Kevin Long Ms. Bev Mentzer Ms. Molly Mae Potter (formerly Capt) Ms. Monica Browning Mitchell Lt Hannah Richmond (formerly Pyncheon) Maj Gen (Ret) Tom Scanlan Ms. Megan Stefanovic (formerly Capt Brewer) Ms. Mary Anne Thompson Ms. Allison Tucker Col (Ret) Len Vernamonti Capt Dan Whalen Maj Gen (Ret) Jerry White

The 2014 Executive Board...looking good at the AFA Convention The 2013-2014 AAS National Staff was hosted by Colorado State (Boulder) and was commanded by Cadet AAS Brig Gen Teller Junak. The 2013-2014 SW National Staff was hosted by the University of Cincinnati and was led by Mr. Ryan Westfall. The National Conclave was held in Washington DC and co-hosted by Howard University and Penn State with staffs led by Cadet Marissa Poje and Mr. Chris Behr. During the year, AAS and SW combined for over 100,000 hours of community service including focus on a Joint National Project aimed at assimilating persons with disabilities into the community.

NOTE: We mention only the top of each leadership team here, simply due to space available. Many extraordinary leaders and followers behind the scenes made every success during this and all subsequent years…a reality, and there is no doubt that the leaders we mention would agree that without their incredible teams, they would never have achieved what was achieved during the year.

The 2014 National Conclave was held at the Marriott Wardman Park in Washington and featured addresses by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Air Force Chief of Staff General Mark Welsh, and Director of the Joint Staff, then Lt General David Goldfein. Following his address, General Welsh remained for over two hours, shaking hands and taking pictures with virtually every one of the 1,172 attendees. The Conclave also included an exclusive nighttime mixer at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum where the Air Force Band performed an incredible array of popular and patriotic songs under the Wright Flyer and many other exceptional displays. The entire event at the Smithsonian was sponsored by the four local chapters of the Air Force Association…an exceptional act of generosity and collaboration with AAS/SW. At the Conclave, among many other things, the General Assembly and the Board of Trustees formally added Maj Gen (Ret) Maggie Woodward (Arnie Alumni) as a second Executive Director, and changed the titles of both to Co-Executive Directors. In addition, the Board approved many provisions in the first AAS/SW Strategic plan, adopting the following mission and vision statements for the Trustees. Mission: Strengthen AAS and SW members by offering unique opportunities for practical experience, education and professional growth consistent with military and civilian service and exceptional leadership. Vision: Guide and support the college student organizations to best provide life experiences leading to the development of exceptionally productive and capable leaders, citizens, airpower advocates and Airmen. As you know, debates about mission and vision statements can go on for days, and the wording for these was not without debate. However, at the end of the debate, we settled on these statements and they serve as the foundation for everything we do. Roughly summarized…We Build Leaders…and someday in the not too distant future, if not already, we will do it better than any other organization on any campus. The 2014-2015 SW National Staff was hosted by Auburn University and was led by Ms. Christina Aycock. The 2014-2015 AAS National Staff was hosted by the Rochester Institute of Technology and was commanded by Cadet AAS Brig Gen John McCarthy. The National Conclave was held in Chicago and co-hosted by the SW and AAS Chapter and Squadron at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, with staffs led by Mr. Phil Cannizzaro and Cadet Joanna Szewczyk. During the year, AAS

and SW combined for over 80,000 hours of community service and continued with a focus on a Joint National Project aimed at assimilating persons with disabilities into the community. In addition, we signed memorandums of support with both the Civil Air Patrol and Air Force Junior ROTC and recognized Cadet Nick Donato from Clarkson for building a new AFA Chapter…The Pride of the Adirondacks. The 2015 National Conclave was held at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile and featured addresses by Under Secretary of the Air Force Lisa Disbrow, then Commander, US Transportation Command, General Paul Selva, then Commander, Air Mobility Command, General Darren McDew, then Commander, Air Force Global Strike Command, Lt General "Seve" Wilson, Mr. James Baker, Chief Strategist to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and AFA Chairman, Brig Gen (Ret) Scott Van Cleef. Over 970 students attended and the Conclave also included an exclusive nighttime mixer at the Field Museum where the Band of Mid-America performed. The entire event at the Museum was sponsored by local and state chapters and the Midwest Region of the Air Force Association. Once again, an exceptional act of generosity and collaboration with AAS/SW.

Furthermore, for the first time, USAA provided exclusive sponsorship of our culminating Military Banquet. This sponsorship provided valuable resources that allowed us to more easily meet financial obligations throughout the year, and further strengthened our relationship with this critical strategic partner. We continue to look for sponsorship of our Joint Opening Ceremony and offer a variety of incentives including brand publicity and other advertising opportunities to any company interested. If you know of any, please let us know at the alumni e-mail address mentioned earlier. Before continuing, one point about community service needs to be emphasized. We've made a concerted effort at putting faces behind the numbers of service hours we complete each year, and when you read the stories and see the photos, it is clear your organization is having an impact. As alumni, we think you should be incredibly proud that thousands of miles were run in support of those with disabilities who cannot run themselves, and that homeless are being fed, that houses are being built, that those who have served and who are serving are being honored, that National Cemeteries are being guarded, that POW/MIA awareness on college campuses is being raised, that flags are being folded, and that veterans homes are being visited…all by members of Arnold Air Society and Silver Wings who are standing on your shoulders.

The 2015-2016 academic year is just beginning, but it is already shaping up to be superb. The student teams at Clemson (AAS, led by Cadet AAS Brig Gen Christian Mitchell) and Rochester Institute of Technology (SW, led Mr. Joey Fitzpatrick) are off to a great start. The 2016 National Conclave will be held at the Dallas Sheraton and we already have confirmed addresses by Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James, President and COO of SpaceX, Ms. Gwynne Shotwell, CNN War Correspondent, Mr. Peter Bergen, and the Commander, Air Force Global Strike Command, General Robin Rand. This Conclave is particularly important because we hope to build great momentum leading to our 70th National Conclave in 2017. As Alumni, you are always welcome to attend and we would love to see you next year in Dallas, at our 70th, or any future Conclave. Perhaps our most significant expansion is in special programs, and this has dramatically increased our workload and our requirement for funds (thus, the creation of the ASEF). Still, despite the challenges, we believe our special programs provide one of our most critical pathways to meeting our mission and vision statements…so the list that follows is just the beginning. • Academic scholarships from $2,000 to $10,000 this year ◦ Funding through the generous contributions of the Airlift/Tanker Association, the George and Vicki Muellner Foundation, and the AAS/SW Trustees • Ten $1,000.00 flight scholarships this academic year • Two (proof of concept) sky diving scholarships this academic year • An AFRL (Rome Labs) fully paid research internship valued at $12,000.00 • Business Executives for National Security (BENS) fully paid research and unpaid internships • Five Air Force Association limited paid internship(s) • Three Secretary of the Air Force (International Affairs) Pentagon Internships • A Secretary of the Air Force (Legislative Liaison) Pentagon Internship • A Secretary of the Air Force (Financial Management) Pentagon Internship • An Air Force Operations (A3) Pentagon Internship • Training for up to 25 Silver Wings civilians conducted by the Center for Creative Leadership • Fellowships for both cadets and civilians at Air University beginning in the summer of 2016 • Training programs instructed by AFROTC Cadre for Silver Wings civilians with the

objective of providing education on Air Force history, organization, and current issues • Opportunities for "SMART" scholarship endorsements available through the Department of

the Air Force civilian personnel program • Support for specific employment opportunities and internships with the Air Force On balance, this list represents an aggressive departure from the past. We will continue to build programs that make a difference in the lives of our members, limited only by the resources we have available. Distinguished Alumni, this letter just scratches the surface of what your organization is doing today. Because you left a fantastic legacy and helped make a great organization even greater, our future is very bright. On behalf nearly 3,500 active members of Arnold Air Society and Silver Wings, thank you for what you have done to make AAS/SW what it is today. If you wish to be more actively involved, we would welcome your continued support through advocacy or through financial donations. Thank you for taking the time to read this update…we look forward to staying in touch in the future. Sincerely, SIGNED//MW//7 SEP 2015 SIGNED//DPW//7 SEP 2015 MARGARET WOODWARD DANIEL P.
