THE PRESIDENT’S CORNER - MAY 2019

As we look forward to our 100th year as a branch we have many things to celebrate. I will be writing more about these next year.

Now I’d like to talk about our membership. As many of you know, one of my past lives involved mathematics, and I can’t help looking at numbers when thinking of our members. Eight percent of our

members are honorary members, meaning that they have been AAUW members at least 50 years. We are thankful for their continued participation, and we can look to them for some of our historical memories. Fifty-one percent of our members have joined in the last 10 years, while 22 percent have joined within the last five years.

Often, when we are talking and planning our activities, we forget that not all our members have been here forever. After I became president, I often heard the question, “Why do we do something that way?”, and usually I could only come up with “Because that’s the way we’ve always done it.” Often in these cases we could look at changing the practice because with new technology and expanding opportunities the old way may not be the best way anymore. Newer members help us to see these possibilities. However, there is some value in knowing the history of an event. That is why I wrote the Explorathon history found in this bulletin on page 7.

We also have a long history relating to our book sale. The first annual book sale took place in a store on Woodward near Maple. All the books were donated by members of the branch and they netted $225. It wasn’t until 1939 that the community was asked to donate books for the sale. An anonymous donor joined our book sale in 1948 offering to pay for books that were selected by local schools and libraries.

Wishing to expand this program to include schools in disadvantaged areas, Jean Walker, book sale chair in 1995, asked branch members and friends to contribute to a “Patron, Donor, Friend, Contributor Fund,” which allowed more schools to participate. Monies from the “school sales” were earmarked for the AAUW Educational Foundation to further the greater mission. Your donation to this fund gives you an opportunity to participate in our mission in two ways: locally to teachers and nationally to AAUW Funds. The profit from the regular sales are distributed to our local scholarships and other local charities that support our mission. Now is the time for you to sign up to work on the 93rd book sale. There is a related article on page 6.

Our Lavish Lunch is a recent addition to our efforts in raising more funds to help our local scholarships. Thanks for all that you do to move our mission forward. This includes working on our projects, attending and supporting our various events like the May 8th Lavish Lunch at the Pine Lake Country Club, participating in the study/interest groups, attending our monthly meetings and much more.

I want you to know that ALL members are valued. And, only if I hear from you when something doesn’t make sense, can I address the issue.

Sally Doty, President

The May Study and Interest Group Spotlight is on:

Green Thumbs

AAUW’s Green Thumbs Study Group is one of the branch’s oldest. Margretta Steinmueller, still a member of the group, started Green Thumbs 42 years ago. In 1977, Margretta and fellow members of an AAUW investment club were considering other possible study/interest groups, and when Margretta suggested, “gardening,” they told her: “You start it, name it, and choose a day to meet and we’ll join.” The original group was 15 members and there are 12 active members today.

The purpose of Green Thumbs is to bring together members who have an interest in, and love of, gardening. Meetings are the third Tuesday of the month, March through October, at 12:30 pm, typically at a member’s home. The hostess provides dessert/beverages prior to discussion of the monthly topic.

At the October end-of-year potluck meeting the schedule and topics for the following year are decided. Recent meetings have included talks on roses, orchids, hydrangeas, geraniums, using vinegar in your garden, bats, planning a garden, container gardening, essential oils, plant exchanges, and field trips to such places as Eastern Market in Detroit, Detroit Garden works and garden walks.

You do not have to be a garden expert to join our group, just have an interest in gardening and a desire to learn more!

A Little History about AAUW Birmingham and Explorathon In 1982, our branch received a grant in the amount of $1,200 from AAUW to fund the first “Yes, You Can!” conference. This was a workshop of hands-on classes to encourage eighth grade girls to become interested in science and math. Cranbrook became a cosponsor, and the workshop was held at Cranbrook Institute of Science. In 1992, “Yes, You Can!” was awarded the Career Education Award by the Detroit Chapter of Women in Communications, Inc., and it was expanded to include high school girls.

When Cranbrook could no longer handle the number of students attending, Birmingham Seaholm High School was invited to join the coalition and the workshops were held there. The branch once again applied to AAUW Educational Foundation Research and Projects Grants to expand the program, and in 1993 a grant of $5,000 was awarded to bring Eugenie Moore, “The Shark Lady,” as keynote speaker and workshop participant to this new seminar entitled “EXPLORATHON.” We have had an EXPLORATHON each year since then.

In 2007 the branch formed a 501(C)(3) organization, the AAUW Birmingham Branch Foundation, Inc., and since then we have been receiving a generous grant from the Ford Motor Company Fund. This allows us to give scholarships or bus subsidies to schools that have a high population of Title I students.

When the Michigan legislature changed the school calendar so that all public schools have essentially the same calendar and holidays, most schools moved their professional development days to the pre and post school year. Thus, we could not host EXPLORATHON in a public school during the school week. Since most of our attendees come with their class and private schools have different vacations than the public schools, from 2006 through 2012 EXPLORATHON was presented at Detroit Country Day School. In 2013 Detroit Country Day School shortened its spring break and EXPLORATHON moved to Cranbrook Kingswood Middle School for Girls, where we currently present the program.

Explorathon announcements, scholarship information, bus subsidy and registration forms are sent to the schools in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne Counties in the first week of December. We arrange for the presenters, check on their needs, arrange for volunteers to work with the presenters, order the food, register the students (who have indicated their choices of six workshops from which they will be assigned three), print the nametags, schedules, etc. We also write the program and have it printed. The amount of work required to present this program is extraordinary, and many, many members of the branch are involved.

This year we had 350 students from 18 schools in all three counties. Students in many of these schools are lacking in opportunities in the STEM area. We can all be very proud of this activity. Photos on this page are from Explorathon in March, 2019.

APRIL COMMUNITY OUTREACH - FORGOTTEN HARVEST

Fifteen AAUW members volunteered their time and energy at Forgotten Harvest on Tuesday, April

16th. After a short orientation, everyone donned lovely hair nets and aprons and headed in the

warehouse to fill “Busch Bags.” (Busch bags provided by $10/a bag donations from Busch Market

customers are filled with food items by Forgotten Harvest volunteers and given to families in need.)

We completed that task, took a short break and returned to

package up frozen parsnips and frozen beets. Along with other

volunteers, we packed over 2000 pounds of parsnips and beets

and 250 pounds of food bags.

Forgotten Harvest is a well-run organization. Everyone who

attended felt they had done very worthwhile work. And it was

Those who attended are eager to return for another day of

work. More information will come about that opportunity.
